My name is Caitlin, and I've been back and forth with Keto for a few years now. June 10th, 2018 I started Keto again and have been pretty successful in my first week, losing 13.8 lbs. I know that number sounds alarming, but I've read that often in your first 2 weeks of Keto, you lose a lot of water weight. In addition to eating Keto, I've been exercising more than I had previously.
I used to want to do Keto because I wanted to lose weight. I've never wanted to be "skinny" (not that there is anything wrong with being skinny), but it was just not enough of a motivation for me, so I'd fall off the wagon... over and over again. But, this time I feel like I have some pretty good motivation to keep me going!
This time I started Keto for 4 lasting reasons:- To live a healthier, and yes, lighter lifestyle.
- I have PCOS, (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and as I was searching for Keto recipes, I came across some information stating that Keto is a pretty good diet to help minimize the effects of PCOS.
- The food that one typically eats on Keto is a lot less restrictive (at least in my opinion) than other diets lifestyle changes. I feel I'm able to control carb intake better than strictly calorie intake. For example, if I go to dinner with friends/family, I have a better idea of what's low carb than how many calories are in a menu item. (I am still watching calories on Keto, but not as closely). And lastly, one huge reason!
- I physically feel better after eating a Keto meal, than I do eating a higher carb meal. After eating a carb-loaded meal, I would feel sluggish, bloated, and sometimes sick to my stomach where I'd have to immediately use the restroom or wallow in that bellyaching pain for hours. It's funny, the only reason I noticed the difference was because after eating my first few Keto meals (back when I started Keto for the first time) my mind had prepared me to feel horrible after a meal and I waited... I waited for that feeling of regret about what I had just eaten... and it never came. So, next Keto meal I ate, I self-assessed after I was finished, and the feeling wasn't there. Now, this could be different for many of you, but this is a big factor for me in why I want to stay Keto going forward.
A few smaller reasons why I've begun Keto again are that I'm getting married in October 2018. Now, I'm not naive to think a miracle is going to happen in under 4 months, but I would like to feel my healthiest at my wedding! And also, I love to sing and used to compete in local competitions and national, (American Idol, The Voice - You won't find any videos, I didn't get that far). I felt self-conscious. I feel like I've let my passion for singing slip away due to my self-consciousness and that kills me. So, I want to change all that and I feel like I'm making a good start! Yes, I could "fall off the bandwagon" again, but I've learned from past mistakes (like not knowing that Keto was based on Net Carbs, not total carbs... What!? How did I miss this?) and feel I'm more prepared than ever to keep it Keto this time!

Hello
My name is Lisa. Day 1 tomorrow !!! Will the group be a forum and active or will it only be Q&A? Either is fine but I’m not seeing any posting from others so just asking. Congratulations on the weight loss and I hope your still moving along! I will post at least weekly on my updates but I will definitely post anytime if I have a question or an experience to help someone else in the group.10 -
Hello! My name is Julie, and I survived my first full week of keto!! Admittedly, my carb intake is a tad higher than what most people would do (my goal is 35 g), so I guess I am trying to live a more keto-friendly lifestyle, rather than following a strict "diet" per se.
I have always struggled with being overweight, since I was little. I suffered from an eating disorder in high school as a result, and have seen a slew of doctors, nutritionists, and personal trainers since then. It took a while, but I was able to get my head and heart in a good place, and start a journey towards health and fitness. Five to six years ago, I was entering my third year of law school and in the BEST physical shape of my life. Enter the bar exam and those first few grueling years as an associate attorney, and weight slowly and steadily crept back. I had fallen off the wagon, slowly stopped exercising, and began picking up terrible eating habits (hello, fast food!). In the last six months or so, I started to feel TERRIBLE about myself again. Knowing the history I've had with eating disorders, and not wanting to go down that dark path again, I decided to bite the bullet and make this lifestyle change to get me, my health, and my life back on a good track.11 -
Hi,
My name is Adrienne and I’m on day 1 of keto. After weeks of research, I decided to take this past weekend to shop and prep for today to be my start date. Did anyone else find meal planning to fit your macros incredibly hard? Just for the ease of it, I planned the same breakfast, lunch and dinner for the work week - it felt like some big science equation trying to figure out foods for each meal to fit everything in and at my macros! Hoping that gets easier?7 -
Hello! I'm Carl and I've been living a low carb lifestyle for quite a while now albeit I've been off it since Thanksgiving but finally got the sugar monster under control. I love this way of life as you have so much more energy, don't consistently think of food (no sugar cravings YAY!!) and of course much easier to lose weight! I'm always looking for more support as well as giving it. Glad you started up this group!!5

Hi! I'm Lauren and this week will be the first week that I am going to try the Keto-friendly lifestyle. I have been an athlete my entire life up until the point I started college. I've only gained about 5 pounds in the three years I've been at college (I now weight 150 pounds), but just don't have as much energy as I was when I was an athlete. My boyfriend's parents started the Keto Diet about two weeks ago and both have already had a lot of success with it, so I figured I would give it a try! My boyfriend is at basic training for the army this summer and has already lost a lot of weight, so I figured I should lose some too! haha I'm hoping this group can help give me some ideas for recipes as well as just support for making the lifestyle change!4

Hi, I'm Brie and I am trying to get back to the fitness level I had before grad school and babies. I used to run, I'd like to again, and I just like having less of me to move around. Also, I have a big birthday in 6 months and I'd like to greet my next decade with a renewed commitment to healthy habits. Keto...its the thing I haven't tried yet!3

Hello! I'm Isabella and I'm starting the keto diet later this week. I am having a thyroid lobectomy (due to a thyroid nodule) on Wednesday and I am at the heaviest weight I've ever been. I have been doing a ton of research and keto seems like the best option for me for a lifestyle change and to help me lose weight efficiently! I have around 100lbs to lose long term, so I hope that this can get me there. If any of you guys are interested, I have an instagram account to track my keto/health/fitness journey (@felldowngotup) and there's a huge keto community on there! I've learned so much about the lifestyle, found new recipes, and have been exposed to people's genuine progress using keto. I'd highly recommend checking it out! Some awesome instagram people are 100ketodays, noelledoesketo, mrselizabethwise, and ladyguacamole. They're awesome!10

Hello. My name is Tracy. I am 49 and started the Keto diet yesterday (for the first time). It’s been a while since I’ve been on MFP. I weighed in at 203.8. I have birthed 9 kids. Ages 27 to 6. Been married almost 30 years. My first grandbaby came in April.9

@felldowngotup - good luck on Wednesday. My son just had that same surgery last week, the only thing he complained about was the sleepiness, which we promptly said "go sleep some more". I hope it's the same for you too!!4

Hi I am Janine and I started keto over 5 years ago because I had stage 3 ovarian cancer. I was also 335 lbs. Today I am totally cancer free (no chemo, radiation or surgery) and 116 pound lighter. 44 more to go. Amen. I am an old pro so if you have any questions please feel free to contact / friend me.

Hello. My name is Catherine. I started Keto on June 4, 2018. In 2006-7 I followed a high protein/low carb regime successfully for 1 year. Keto was not “a thing” then, but I’ve read enough to think it will be a good pathway for me. I’ve noticed over the last 2 weeks improved sleep, more consistent energy throughout the day, and I have dropped nearly 6 lbs. I did have Keto flu day 4-6 but saw my potassium had dropped; once I added it back, I sprang into alertness. My challenge is getting enough fat per day, but I’m eating more intentionally than I ever have before. Glad to be here among others starting up.5

Hello, I am Mary. I started Keto back in Sept. after walking almost daily for almost 2 years with a friend to help with my BP, Hypoglycemia , PCOS, and Depression. I however, had a bad set back in April. I took a job (was a SAHM) and my walking partner also took a new job leaving us not walking because we both were working physically demanding jobs.
When my Sugar and BP started becoming a problem as I was not following my lifestyle and was frankly not eating most of the day and gorging myself after getting home before crashing and doing it all over the next day. When my body crashed I was sick for a couple weeks which left me jobless again and depressed. This left me back to eating everything I knew better then to put in my body. I chose to not feel sorry for myself anymore and take back my relationship with my Keto! I apologized and it is loving me again for the last 5 days. That is what brings me here! Nice to meet you all!

Hi, Im Jackie and Ive been a serious sugar addict. Ive always had to eat sugary substances every day as a soother for stress and as an intense need. I couldn't walk out of a grocery store without a sugar snack every day! I started eating Keto on June 4, had major kept flu but was able to work through it with adding extra salts, and drinking extra bone broth. Im 2 1/2 weeks in and I can say its pretty amazing that my cravings are not taking over anymore. Sweet! haha. I lost 7 pretty quickly, this week has been slow. I didn't take my initial measurements but started that today as my clothes do feel a bit different. My goal is to try this for 6 months and see how I feel and what I have lost for weight. I started at 197 and would love a goal of 160. Its scary to almost think what that would look like. I guess you have to also be willing to release the weight... Im trying to hold off eating in the am until I feel hungry. It is helping to make one breakfast that lasts a few days that I can microwave. I try and make a plan for groceries of what Ill need for the week and hope eventually to get into doing meal prep for the week on just one day, but its a process.5

Hello, name is Veronica. I started keto on May 15, now day 39.
Reason I started/chose keto?
I've been overweight, technically obese according to my BMI, for nearly my entire teens and adult life. I have restricted calories and increased exercise which would be great for awhile before I ended up falling off of the wagon and gaining everything back, plus some. Doesn't help that I work in a law firm and spend the majority of my day in front of a computer.
My motivation to really lose weight is in part thanks to my wedding and honeymoon coming up in the Fall. (I'll be non-keto on the honeymoon but will be strict when I come back to help take any water weight/gained pounds off). I researched several options but keto kept coming up as my best option for the goals I want to achieve.
How I'm doing?
Well as of today, I am 15.7 pounds down. Not too bad if I say so myself.9 -
Hello, All. I'm Emma
I am in my first week back on keto. I chose keto over other diets to combat very serious craving/food addiction problems. I had a big weight gain (20lbs/mo) as a result of hormonal birth control last year so I am trying to get back to recognizing the person I see in the mirror!
Thank you all for your stories!! SO excited to be part of this group!4 -
Hello everyone! I'm Brigit, 42 years old. I have been on MFP before, but opened a new profile. I had previously lost 60 pounds in 2009 on the starvation/divorce/cardio diet. And surprise, surprise, gained it all back plus another 20 pounds for my added misery.
I am now doing this weight loss thing the right way. Diet and exercise. I have been on the keto diet since 6/17/18 and have already lost 4 pounds. My main motivation is to just feel better about myself. My inspiration is a co-worker who has been doing this for 2 years and has been able to lose and maintain her weight. She looks amazing, and is more clear-headed and focused than ever (per her self evaluation).
I watched "The Magic Pill" on Netflix and it really opened up my eyes. Highly recommend it for those of you that haven't seen it. I'm especially interested in the effects of the Keto diet on blood sugars. My mother is type 2 diabetic, who now has renal failure and is looking at dialysis. I don't want to follow her path.
The low fat calorie restricted diets always really f'ed me up, I was a Monster!! I always felt hungry, and never satiated. I am already noticing now that I am full, and don't need to eat. It feels better to my body, and it feels "right", if that makes sense.
Happy to be a part of this group, and good luck to you all!!

Hello there.
I'm Alyssa. I'm 29, and like a lot of this community, I've done this whole lose-the-weight thing before. I got realllllll into (read: obsessive) working out and eating healthy about 4 years ago, lost 60 lbs like nothin' and then life smacked me in the face.
I lost everything in a house fire and due to lack of resources, had to move in with my boyfriend at the time. Of course, the stress of losing everything I've ever owned plus moving in with a boyfriend I didn't really love took a toll on my body. My BED was back and in full force, I didn't care. The BF and I broke up 2 months in and we lived together for another 6 after that while I found a new place and reestablished myself. I was eating fast food 4-5 times a week, not moving my body, and just generally hating my life with him.
Once I was able to move out I gained some of my motivation back and hit the gym again. I was eating healthy, lookin' good. Until I started working 75+ hour weeks for a few years. I didn't make the gym a priority anymore, the only thing I cared about when I was outside of work was sleep.
I feel it in my soul now, that keto is for me, and I know it will be what works best for me. I can't go super restrictive like a traditional low-cal diet or my binge urges creep up and haunt me. I've got PCOS and hypothyroidism-- both benefit from a low carb/low sugar approach so , why the hell not???
Today is my first day of keto. Most people say "I'll start Monday", as if Monday has some sort of new, redemptive quality to it.
I decided to start on a Saturday because the weekend is when I most lose motivation and want to eat unhealthy foods with my friends.
I've got a positive mindset, a great community and friends supporting me, and best of all: the Universe has my back.10 -
Hi, my name is Christina. 2nd time around on Keto. I was on it last Fall but fell off the wagon. This time I am following Chris Kresser's 30 day reset diet which is Keto-like. So, I am starting my 3rd week & down 8lbs. Been monitoring my ketosis stats & staying between "small" to "moderate". Sure glad the Keto flu is gone! I want to wish everyone all the best & willpower to succeed. Thanks ❤4
