Hi! My name is Tanya and I live in Northern Cali. I am 43 and have recently started swimming for exercise. I just do laps right now. I don't know the correct forms or different styles. I just swim and kick. IMy Apple watch logs the laps very accurately. It's fast becoming my favorite thing to do. It helps to relax me after work or after a long day of sports. I just wanted to introduce myself. Also, what kind of challenges does the group do?

    Welcome.
I found YouTube to be very helpful for tips to improve my technique. Helped me break 40+ year old bad technique.
I too find swimming to be highly therapeutic.
Multiple studies have also found that it is effective in reducing depression and anxiety.

Glad you found us! I just do laps, front crawl. It's all I know. I'm a late learner, so I'm still working on technique. I aim for about 1.25-1.5 miles per session, as I usually do a deep water cardio class afterward, and it's very physically challenging. I don't think we've had any challenges since I've joined this group, but to be honest, I doubt I'd be up for them. Sometimes my biggest challenge is just getting to the pool... ;)

I too also watch YouTube videos for lessons/tutorials and swim tips etc. Great resource for all swimmers.

Two of the most useful topics I found for improving my front crawl are "catch up drill" and "high elbow front crawl."

Try to get into some adult lessons for stroke development or a master's swim group. You will get immediate feedback and corrections. Master's has completely revamped all my strokes over the past few months. The Y often has these groups and other pools prob do too. Have fun!

I too am new to the group. After several years off swimming I went to adult lessons. I've now learned to do fc and am doing a 6 wk to swim a mile program.

Once you get to a half mile, the rest is easy. :)
    Technique, time, and persistence.

Thanks @fishgutzy. Given your mileage, that means a lot!

"Just 1 more lap" becomes just 5 more laps. Now, in China, it is just one more 2.2km set.
