We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for August are:

Monday - Imastar2 (Derrick)
Tuesday - Jerdtrmndone (Jerry)
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday - goldenfrisbee (Chris)
Friday - misterhub (Greg)

Today's topic:
Name three things that come to mind when you think of diet...
Name three things that come to mind when you think of LTL...

Name three things that come to mind when you think of diet... Japenese Parliment, the foods we eat, a torture system to force us to eat, or not eat, what someone thinks is the ONLY way.

Name three things that come to mind when you think of LTL... Eating whatever you want, WITHIN reason, balancing weight goals with life's enjoyment, our daily discussions, here on the board, which help with the first two.

Diet = rigid eating plan, deprivation, short term focus
LTL = flexibility, way of eating supports doing activities I love (hiking, biking), sustainable for the rest of my life

I agree with #gadgetgirllL about the definition of diet - at least the way it is traditionally viewed.

To me, LTL means: 1) This is simply the way I do it; 2) I don't plan to change it, unnecesarily, without a good reason; 3) I have energy and good health based on this approach.

    Deprivation
Temporary changes for a GW or -X Lbs
Look forward to eating the old foods I missed, then eat at end of diet.

    LTL
Eat BUT need to track the quantity
    Find an Activity you LIKE
    No Mindless Eating
Bonus: No Finish Line when reach GW, just keep doing the same way.

Diet - Eating low cal. no fat foods with out much taste, a recipe for disaster.
Ok for short term weight loss but unsustainable.
    No snacks at all.

LTL - eating what you like in moderation.
    Snacks with in your values.
    Just moving.

    Diet:
    1) Focus on quick results
    2) Deprivation
    3) Means to a desired end

    LTL:
    1) Natural ebb and flow of sometimes more/sometimes fewer calories
    2) Some planning/mindfulness required
    3) More cooking at home

I love what Al said! Diet? First it is just what we eat or what we feed our pets etc. Secondly, it can mean to be doing a reduced calorie diet. I like the WW approach as Lin says. For me the "Lifestyle" and how I eat have become one and the same to a larger extent.
