Using emoticons here in MFP can be challenging.
In addition, when using the app, you must use the smilies provided inside the forum. Using the ones on your device keyboard will cause the text editor to eat everything in your post after the insertion of those characters.

@Sunny_Bunny_ and I have provided some screen shots to demonstrate how to access the available emoticons.

The easiest method is to look for this guy: v8grdsgvuyzf.jpg
App or site, he's your Emoji Guy.

You'll find a version of him in your text editor.
The site looks like this:

My Android app's MFP text editor looks like this.

Regardless of your version, look for our Smilie Guy.

Once you hit our Guy up for his skillz, a drop-down will display some options:

That's it?!?! NOPE. Our Guy is holding out on us. We have a whole slew of other emoticons to choose from, but they are hidden.

Vanilla Forums has all of these available to us:

But how do we get them into a post?
Simple. It's all about the colon (:). Emoticon tags work once they are between 2 colons.
Place the words I have posted beside the smilie you want inside 2 colons.
But who can memorize all that, right?
You can access these more easily by:
  1. Typing a single colon.
  2. Then, typing the first letter of the emoticon's name.

Our member @Sunny_Bunny_ demonstrated this in a screen capture for us:

Typing a letter after our colon, though it may take a couple tries using different letters, will get you the cheeky smilie that will get your point across.
Remember: make sure that tag ends in colon or nobody is going to see your face! Selecting a tag from the drop-down will complete the tag for you, but if you are typing in the tag yourself, don't forget the ending colon. :smile:

Geek Bonus:
For the Geekiest of us, or those obsessed motivated enough and with a knack for memorizing useless things, you have the old emoticons (before the big update) available to you.
laugh = :laugh:
happy = :happy:
mad = :mad:
explode = :explode:
grumble = :grumble:
ohwell = :ohwell:
flowerforyou = :flowerforyou:
indifferent = :indifferent:
glasses = :glasses:
embarassed = :embarassed:
frown = :frown:
smokin = :smokin:
devil = :devil:
sick = :sick:

drinker = :drinker:
brokenheart = :brokenheart:
sad = :sad:
bigsmile = :bigsmile:
blushing = :blushing:
huh = :huh:
yawn = :yawn:

Again, the name must be bookended by a colon. However, this time, you have to either have this list available to reference so you can c&p the exact tag or have them memorized.

There you are. You'll be emoting with the big boys any moment.
I hope you found this tutorial helpful.
Please PM me if you find this unclear, or if you can think of any other MFP idiosyncrasies that need a tutorial. :lol:
