Well, August is mostly over. Some people are going to 35 days, but the official challenge was only for 28 days. A few people started later than others; they have not reached the final week yet. You can still start now, and your data will get added to the results. Some members of the challenge have already shared that they intend to continue eating this way. Here are the graphs for the results.
The average weight loss was just over 4 pounds (so a pound a week) and 87% of the participants lost weight. That's not bad when a couple members stated that their goal was maintaining their weight without counting calories. The thick purple line is the average of all participants.
The percentage lost chart is pretty similar. Participants lost an average of 1.75% of their body weight in the 4 weeks. That's a pretty solid rate of loss. The thick purple line is the average of all participants.
Dropout rates were what I was really interested in. They are still in progress because people aren't done and a few people said they will be away and check in late.
We had 41 people sign up. We only had 36 people check in. The other 5 just ghosted on the whole thing. Of the 36 who checked in, 3 never came back. Really, it's hard to count those 8 people in the results. They didn't even join for a week. After that, we lost about 2 people a week. We have 26 people on track to have completed it. Maybe a couple others will come back but we'll ignore that. So, 79% of the people starting stuck it out. That's a 21% drop-out rate. A >20% dropout rate is pretty typical for any sort of diet study. I wish it was better. Maybe we'll get more people to jump in and try it and the numbers will improve and get more solid.
You can still try this out. Go ahead and start now. It isn't restricted to August. All it is is 4-5 weeks of eating ad libitum and seeing how it works for you. You can join the group here.
