As some of you know, in middle of the challenge, I got rather sick and finally discovered I had an inflamed liver and blood test levels that were high enough to cause significant concern. To get my liver to a happier place and not risk more serious issues like liver failure, I was put on a fairly restrictive diet with lots of warnings issued from my doctor. The biggest preventative = diet and exercise. Ironically, the diet changes I had started as a result of Biggest Looser may have triggered some of the inflammation since livers apparently are not a fan of drastic diet changes.

Aside from this being a giant wake up call to continue to loose weight - I became very aware of how particular foods can affect certain foods can have on your body. Things like candy, soda, or really any sugar, I know how my body is going to react. Also found that calorie counting in My Fitness Pal helped me really realize how many calories were in certain foods and how fast the calories add up.

The weekly challenges for biggest loser have definitely made a difference in how I perceive wellness. I was pretty good before at being mindful of how many calories I was consuming, but by actually logging my intake, I quickly found that my nutrition wasn’t always well-balanced. I pay more attention now to macros than I ever have, and I actively try to choose foods that don’t just meet calorie goals but also contain enough protein.

The step count challenges encouraged me to pay more attention to how much I move in a day, which has usually been very little unless I go for a run or to the gym. I bought a Fitbit to encourage myself to move around more, and it has DEFINITELY made a difference. If I haven’t hit my step goal for the day, or if I want to eat/drink a treat, I often walk laps around my living room until I’ve met the goal or burned off enough calories. The group walks are a fun way to get those steps in and socialize at the same time, and I’ll be glad to keep those up.
