Challenge: Nice to Meet You!
As we wrap up the summer (do we have to?) and transition to fall, our group will have a spike in membership. It's happening already and I expect it will continue through October. With so many new folks joining us and wanting them to feel welcome, I thought a round of introductions was in order. Plus, we have so many terrific regular posters & participants that I'm often wishing I knew more about them. Who is the person behind that insightful post?
This Week's Challenge: Let's introduce ourselves. It's always helpful to learn a little more about each other. I've scoped out a few framing questions, put please share whatever you'd like!
1. First Name:
2. Where does your MFP user name come from?
3. What inspired you to join MFP?
4. What healthy habit would you most like to create? AND/OR What healthy habit have you created that’s been the most impactful to you?
5. What’s something you do every day that renews you and makes you happy?
6. Share a random fact about yourself or your life.
....................................................................................................................................................
Our monthly challenge, This September I Will..., continues! Please loop us in as to how you are progressing and how it's going for you!
And it's Move It Monday! Post your Monday workout here:

Where does your MFP user name come from? About 10 years ago, when I was in my 40's, I walked a bunch of half marathons throughout the US. I loved getting a finisher medal...thus, "themedalist".
What inspired you to join MFP? I was 50 pounds overweight when I joined MFP in 2011. I was just looking for a calorie counter app but then discovered the MFP community. It took me a year to lose 50 pounds and I've maintained my loss since then. But I've stayed here because it helps keep my focus on healthy living. Plus, my wonderful friends and this group are very important to me.
What healthy habit have you created that’s been the most impactful to you? Walking 15 minutes a day. I now try to walk an hour a day in 15-20 min chunks.
What’s something you do every day that renews you and makes you happy? I play the guitar (OK...I practice the guitar). Listening to music is enjoyable, but playing music is a whole different thing. I love it.
Share a random fact about yourself or your life. I'm convinced that at some point in my life I'm going to have an encounter with an extraterrestrial. No joke. I hope it goes well.

1. First Name: Kathy
3. Where does your MFP user name come from? When I joined MFP I was in the midst of my enthusiasm about the Twilight books and movies. On the Twilight blogs my handle was TeamEdwardsince77 (abbreviated tes77) as a reference to the fact that my husband's name is Edward and we've been married since 1977. The user name TES77 was taken in MFP, so I turned it around.
4. What inspired you to join MFP? I started exercising in 2007 and lost 35 pounds, but my 2011, my weight was started to inch up. I'd just been talking with my sister about it and she was feeling frustrated too. The next day she was given an IPad, and MFP was the first app she downloaded. Tracking my food was the missing link.
5. What healthy habit would you most like to create? Not sure right now, but I keep learning and trying new things that I was never interested in (tracking food, yoga, etc.).
and/or
What healthy habit have you created that’s been the most impactful to you? Meeting my sister 3 times a week to workout.
5. What’s something you do every day that renews you and makes you happy? I look for something beautiful every day.
6. Share a random fact about yourself or your life. I love Jane Austen and attend historical balls in period dress. (I've got a ball coming up Oct. 6)6 -
1. First Name: Heidi
2. Where does your MFP user name come from? It's my name.
3. What inspired you to join MFP? I wanted to lose weight and keep track of my eating
4. What healthy habit would you most like to create? Working out every day. Eating healthy, and keeping track of what I eat.
5. What’s something you do every day that renews you and makes you happy? Playing with my kids, crafting
6. Share a random fact about yourself or your life. I have 5 children. I'm the color guard instructor for the local H.S. I have a flock of backyard chickens.6 -
1. First Name: Carol/Taran* (more about that below!)
2. Where does your MFP user name come from? My name! I know that's boring, but....
3. What inspired you to join MFP? -Being overweight, unfit, and also taking on a personal trainer -so logging alongside that helped.
4. What healthy habit would you most like to create? AND/OR What healthy habit have you created that’s been the most impactful to you? Exercise is very important, I do lots of walking and joined a gym/fitness centre with my husband a few years ago. I had a pt for a while but it got too difficult to make the sessions and the expense was also a deciding factor in discontinuing the regular pt sessions. But it had a good impact and I'm still at the gym at least twice a week (health/injuries permitting) and the pool three times as I love swimming.
5. I want to get back on track with healthy eating as I've slipped down the slippery slope of beer swilling and cake scoffing and it's got out of control - hence the renewed weight gain, which I now hope to take in hand. I am 'dryathalon-ing' for most of September.
6. What’s something you do every day that renews you and makes you happy?
Music - I have wireless headphones and more or less constantly play music on my way to work, and also to do cleaning, etc. I LOVE dancing and try and get some in whenever I can.
And I write and publish fanfiction - Taran is my alter ego and an anti-heroine of a book I'm currently editing.
7. Share a random fact about yourself or your life.
I'm left handed. And I write fan fiction!

2. Where does your MFP user name come from? Long story....I am the mother of 3 sons. One day I was was standing with my hands on my hips and my legs spread (imagine the Peter Pan stance). scolding my boys for some infraction or another. Breaking the tension my husband yells out "look boys it Pinky Pan!" My boys loved it and I laughed too. I am big Peter Pan fan. Dave has called me Pinky since our first date 20 some years ago. I was very small and he told me I was no bigger than his pinky finger.
3. What inspired you to join MFP? After 2 spinal fusions surgeries and a heart attack my doctor told me that I had to lose weight and start walking a mile every day. I told him it was a struggle to walk down the driveway let alone a mile. He told to to Google Leslie Sansone Walk at Home and start there. I quit smoking and started moving. Then a friend told me about MFP and I have never looked back.
4. What healthy habit would you most like to create? AND/OR What healthy habit have you created that’s been the most impactful to you? I have learned that I have to keep my body moving too manage my chronic pain and to be healthy. I try not to sit most of the day. There is always music playing and I walk in place or dance. Weather permitting I am outdoors golfing, walking or gardening,
5. What’s something you do every day that renews you and makes you happy? My list is long....I sing, dance, do yoga and meditate. I also have a special someone, my grandson Jonny. We are the best of friends and rarely a day goes by that I don't see him. I get him on and off the bus most days. I have taken care of him since he was 27 days old when my DIL returned to work. He is my sunshine.
6. Share a random fact about yourself or your life. After only 3 years of golf I managed to get a hole in one last October.

@PinkyPan1 , I love the story of your user name! I also love the name Mary - my middle daughter is Mary, named after my mom.3

1. First Name: Marta
2. Where does your MFP user name come from? prgirl39mfp : pr stands for Puerto Rico, where I am from. 39 is the year I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and mfp is MyFitnesspal
3. What inspired you to join MFP? When I was diagnosed I had no idea where to turn to so I Googled and found a site called Ditch the Carbs and they mention a lot about counting macros so my second search on Google was " counting Macros" and MFP site came up. Been a member on and off for all these years. So far, 2018 has been the year I have been here the longest without quitting.
4. What healthy habit would you most like to create? AND/OR What healthy habit have you created that’s been the most impactful to you? When I started I had no idea what to so. I have never considered myself sporty of super freaky with exercise so I went down to basics which it was walking. When I started I could not even walk 10 minutes. The longest I have walked is 15 miles. I have done everything (COMBAT, HIIT, Zumba, Cross Fit, etc) but walking is my thing. I love it. It is therapy for me. I have anxiety and depression so it does clear my head.
5. What’s something you do every day that renews you and makes you happy? I always go to sleep thanking God for my blessings and I wake up and do the same. Also getting dressed up with my exercise clothes, making my bed in the morning and asking myself " How are we going to spend our day, what good choices am I making today". Sounds silly but it has brought me so much happiness and direction for the past 6 years I would not change it for the world. Not everyday is easy or good but the intention is there.
6. Share a random fact about yourself or your life: I am an introvert; I am obsessed with documentaries about psychopaths and criminals, I am scared of heights. I am a realist borderline pessimist so believe me when I tell you that I have to work very hard on this "think happy be happy" stuff!
5 -
This is SO much fun, ladies! I’m an introvert as well, @prgirl39mfp and I love the connection to others this challenge is bringing.
1. Fist name: Rita
2. Where does your MFP name come from? I’m a Speech Language Pathologist from Nebraska, so put it all together to get nebslp.
3. What inspired you to join MFP? It was January, 2013. I was retiring in May, 2013, and planning to move 900 miles from home by myself to work on an Apache reservation and knew I needed to get in better shape fast to improve my health and self-esteem. I wanted to explore beautiful NM.
4. What healthy habit would you most like to create? Increasing movement throughout the day every day without having to think about it.
5. What’s something you do every day that renews you and makes you happy? I read books of every genre and listen to podcasts on multiple topics...usually health or quilting, and there’s one that lets me listen to actual marriage therapy sessions that is AHmazing!!! And I feel renewed whenever I spend time outside and become one with nature.
6. Share a random fact about yourself or your life: I’m more of a dreamer than a doer so my to do list from 5 years ago looks much the same as today’s list! I’ve been dreaming of starting an Etsy shop for years. And I have a (small) tractor tire that I can flip.
7 -
Sounds amazing your inspiration to join MFP @nebslp I recently started listening to podcasts and they practically changed my life. I listen to some about marriage too. Life savers. Nice to meet you.4

As I’ve been going through my photos, I’ve realized they fall into 5 categories:
Photos of family & friends
Photos of teaching
Photos of our travels
Photos of my art
Photos of: trees, lots & lots of trees 🌲🌴🌲🌳🌴🌳🌲 🌴🌲🎄🌳🌿🍃🌿🍀🍃
That’s me: family, empowering students, travel, art, & trees ..... & decluttering 😂
Oh, and inside, I’m a fairy 🧚🏿♂️ & wish I could fly & live in a treehouse!!!!5 -

@MadisonMolly I’d visit you in your treehouse! Maybe we could photoshop my many bird pictures into your trees😂3

First Name: Tracie
Where does your MFP user name come from? I started out with OConnell5483, which is my last name and an old address. I recently changed it to PackerFanInGB for a few different reasons. I chose it because it doesn't have my actual name or identifying info in it, and because I'm a Green Bay Packers fan.
What inspired you to join MFP? I joined long ago, lost some weight but then was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. I had several surgeries including bilateral mastectomy, 4 months of chemotherapy (three different kinds) and 6 weeks of daily radiation. During chemo, they load you up on steroids so you don't have allergic reactions. It makes you really nauseous, causes everything to taste bad and gain weight. I went through a phase where I had to eat or drink whatever I could keep down and that ended up being food that was not healthy...waffles, vanilla shakes, etc. During chemo, I gained 35 lbs and had to buy clothes to fit me. I have not been able to lose that weight and it's been over 6 years. I've actually gained more even. I'm terrified of having the cancer come back and I want to be the healthiest version of me that I can be so that I will know I did everything I could to be healthy if it ever returns. (Too much info? Sorry! It's the truth.)
What healthy habit would you most like to create? I actually have many, and I don't know which one I want more. I'll share a few though. I want to take daily walks and actually look forward to it AND I want to kick sugar. I feel like if I could do these two things, I would become so much healthier! I am 3 weeks postop a hip repair, so hoping the daily walks can begin in the next month or so... God only knows when I will be able to say no to ice cream without going through withdrawal!
AND/OR What healthy habit have you created that’s been the most impactful to you? Logging into My Fitness Pal daily and logging my food, being accountable, is a habit that has kept me from giving up! If I didn't log into MFP every day, I know that I would be in worse health than I am both mentally and physically. I also write in a gratitude journal every night...I write 5 things I'm grateful for that day, big or small. It sets me on a positive note before I go to sleep.
What’s something you do every day that renews you and makes you happy? I like to listen to podcasts on my drive home from work. Also, every evening after everyone has gone to bed, I turn off the TV and spend quiet time reading and listening to a "white noise" app that plays the sound of rain and a distant thunderstorm. I need quiet time, and that's the only time I get it.
Share a random fact about yourself or your life. I'm a dreamer. I'm 58 years old and still haven't given up on my dreams, although realistically I know I won't achieve most of them. I love nature. I love fishing. Being near water is my happy place. I've always been a Tomboy.

1. Not too much info...I’m sorry you went through all of that. You WILL get to the point of loving your walks, I promise. One tip: drive to a new starting point to vary what you see on your route. Music. Podcasts. OK, 3 tips 😜
2. What are your Dreams?!! ⛅️2 -
@PackerFaninGB never stop dreaming! Why not just pick one and make it a reality?! We dreamers can make this THE year to get things rolling. @MadisonMolly Beautiful picture! Wings would be awesome!!! Pink please.1

I just LOVE reading your posts, learning more about you, and especially how thoughtful and supportive you all are of each other. This really is a special group. Your posts are very motivating to me. Wait till you see what’s coming up in October!
Thank you to everyone who added their bio this week. It’s always good to learn more about each other!4 -

I think this is an outstanding habit, @prgirl39mfp. How we frame the day and our expectations from it matters greatly. It sets the tone for the whole day. And I can’t think of a better way to set a positive tone for the day than to lead off the morning with some expressions of gratitude.
I stumbled onto this quote recently and I think it’s awesome:
“Seize the day. Grab it by both hands and shake all the fun you can out of it!”

I do listen to music or podcasts when I walk, and sometimes I just want to listen to the sounds around me. I LOVE the idea of driving to a new starting point! Like maybe one of our local parks or the river walk. I don't know why I never thought to do that. Thank you! I am getting so excited to get the nod from Dr. that I can begin walking distances! My goal for the remainder of 2018 is to build the habit of taking a daily walk.
My Dreams? Well, I always thought I would travel and see the world, especially Ireland or Scotlad. I feel the urge to travel deep inside and always have. I no longer see that happening. I also always thought I would have a cabin up north on a lake as a weekend retreat. I grew up going to "the cabin" with my folks and brothers and it never once entered my mind that I would not have one "when I grew up". I don't see that happening anymore either. Those are probably my two biggest dreams. My husband and I just don't seem to be on the same page anymore, so although I haven't given up (because I am stubborn and don't like being told "no"), I know realistically they probably will not happen.
I guess a fun tidbit I could share with everyone about myself is that I have 3 adult children from a previous marriage and my husband has 3 adult children from a previous marriage, so together we have 6 adult kids and a total of 18 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren! Truly blessed with a large healthy family!

@Themedalist
I often say “Carpe Diem”. I’ll have to add the “grab” and “shake “ part!
@PackerFanInGB
After I retired I went on 2 international trips with my youngest daughter at her suggestion. I never ever thought I would do that and I was way out of my comfort zone...at first. I was really scared! Then last spring I went to Paris again with my 2 daughters and 2 daughters-in-law at my request this time (still scared but did it anyway!)! My husband had no desire to go outside of the country (I did invite him every time) and he stayed home. But now he’s changed his tune and he is planning a trip to Iceland for a year from now. I didn’t expect that! I guess he got tired of being left behind. Things can change. Don’t let anyone steal your dreams! This is your life.
About your family, I’ll bet family gatherings are wild and lots of fun! Many blessings there!!!1 -

@nebslp, I’m glad you like that quote. It’s a great attitude to have. I also like the “Grab the day by both hands” piece. When we have something by both hands, we are controlling it, aren’t we? I want to control my day. I get to decide how I spend my time. Often, I’ll find myself getting sidetracked into a big time sink and a gentle “Nope...I don’t want to spend my minutes doing this” gets me back on track. Even though I can’t control what happens to me during the day and what life throws at me, I do control how I respond to it.
I am THRILLED to hear how traveling has benefited you and your family! It sounds like your husband now sees some benefit of traveling and wants to experience it for himself. Great to hear!2 -

@PackerFanInGB, I can’t think of a better habit to create than a daily walk! If I could only keep one of my habits, my daily walk would be the one that I select. Thankfully, I don’t have to choose just one.
If you work towards going on a moderate paced 22 minute walk daily, you will meet the public health recommendation of exercising moderately for 150 minutes a day. That’s what it boils down to, 22 minutes a day. Generally it’s phrased as 30 minutes a day, but that’s 5 days a week. Walking daily for 22 minutes will put you at 154 minutes a week. Of course, more walking and other types of exercise would be even better, but you’ll meet the recommendation with a daily 22 minute walk.

@PackerFanInGB , I've been able to enjoy some international travel with my daughters. My husband doesn't like to travel, not does he like to dance, but he doesn't mind me doing those things. In fact, when we start planning a trip, he is always glad to figure out how to pay for it and will even check out hotels and places to visit.
I used to visit a cabin when I was a kid, too. Such fun!2 -
@PackerFanInGB @77tes
My husband is not a big traveler, nor does he dance, so I’m looking for ways I can satisfy my inner gypsy in my own or cultivating traveling buddies from my friends...so far, no real progress, but I’m not giving up!!3
