Now, I do get that I am supposed to eat only 1000 calories/day. But I was starving and i worked out pretty hard--weights/elliptical/swim laps. I have a bodybugg so I am pretty sure the calorie count is good. I am way under mfp calories counted for same exercises. I worked out 2 hours both of those days. I weight 172.

Last weekend was a carb-cheating disaster. On Monday, I was good on carbs and started this on Tuesday to jump start getting into ketosis. Since I ate over 1000 calories, I can see why I can't technically call this a fat fast??? But even so, with an average of 85% fat, shouldn't I be in ketosis? Or am I just one of those people who don't register?

I have lost 6.7 pounds sinces Tuesday am, but that is only 1 pound less than last Friday. I gained 5.6 pounds over the weekend with carbs and water retention so I knew that should drop off anyway.

Any ideas? I plan on trying this 2 more days. I am not feeling as 'energized' this morning, but I think I just need more sleep--been getting up early for appointments and only getting about 6 hours. So I may be tired from lack of sleep, not diet.

Thanks.

Is there a reason why you are aiming for only 1000 calories a day? The low cals in combination with the exercise would probably drain most anybody!

I went through something similar recently- doing a ton of moderate paced cardio, lower cals and keto macros. I ended up putting my body under stress which was reflected in blood work and overall inflammation. Chronic exercise like that can put you into a state of inflammation where your body essentially gets stressed and holds on to EVERYTHING! :(

I started doing HIIT or high intensity interval training primarily on the treadmill for around 30-40 minutes including cool down time. It seems like it would burn less calories because of its shorter duration, but in actuality it ramps up your metabolism for up to 48 hours. Another thing is exactly what you stated- get your rest, this will help with carb cravings and prevent benders.

In any case, 71 lb weight loss is awesome! You're on your way!

You might be keto adapted at this point. It's not a bad thing. It just means your body knows exactly how many ketones to secrete for your energy expender and doesn't over-compensate which then expels the ketones through urine. This happens overtime. To truly know if you in ketosis you could get a ketone blood monitor. Also, if you are a heavy water drinker, it will dilute your urine.

Thanks Blizane. Maybe it is the water--never knew that.

Golightly--Only the low 1000 calories for the Fat Fast. I normally take in 14-1600/day. The Fat Fast is supposed to last 3-5 days where you eat 80-90% fat.

I found an interesting little snippet on Mark's Daily Apple:

There are a couple ways to kickstart ketone production, if that’s what you’re after. You can increase your intake of medium chain triglycerides, as found in coconut products. Since MCTs don’t show up in cell membranes and never really appear in adipose tissue, they go directly to the liver to be converted into acetyl-CoA for energy. Remember how the acetyl-CoA-ATP pathway can be overwhelmed, thus spurring the creation of ketones? That’s what eating MCTs can do – increase ketone production. Use more coconut oil and fewer long-chain saturated fats (which do go into cell membranes, can show up in adipose tissue, and are less likely to overwhelm the liver’s ability to make ATP), like animals fats, while you get adjusted.

I had some of my sons birthday cake on July 26th (a very small slice) kicked me outta ketosis none the less.... and it took me, 16 days to get back in to Ketosis... even after HIIT training, lifting, IF and cutting carbs to 9-16 grams per day... sometimes it just takes longer than others... keep up the great work :)
