We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for December below:

Tuesday - 88olds (George)
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday - savignr (Bob)
Friday - Podkey (Bob)

Today's topic: Your weight management gift to yourself this year.

I've been doing this weight management thing since 2014. Both here and at WW meetings, there's a customary tradition that many people lament the holidays because of challenges with weight management. This often extends into eating more / types of foods that contributes to gaining weight, which in turn often brings regrets.

Will whatever you do this year be anything different than in past years? Will you manage your program in the next week or two to avoid gaining weight, or are you OK with adding a few pounds this time of year? If you're pro-active, do you feel like you're "missing out"? Alternatively, if you're OK with the weight gain, do you end up regretting it later?

Retired to Florida, no office to contend with, no cookie exchange, I’m basically out of it.

But when I was in it, like my answer to about everything, I kept tracking. Even if I knew the numbers wouldn’t work.

On Motivation & Support someone suggested calculating maintenance calories for your current weight and aim at that for a couple of weeks. I thought that sound advice.

But in general I never felt I was missing out.
Living within some reasonable limits is ok. It’s the responsible way to live. It’s just how life is, there are limits. It’s not an injustice.

I didn’t always think this way, but my old way of thinking ended up at 285lbs, HBP, a CPAP... it’s a long list. Accepting a few limits is better.

I'm not going to lament to the holidays only to Christmas day it self like I did for Thanksgiving day. Nothing off the wall in between it or anything like that. Right now my biggest challenge or battle is fighting volume. I'm just plain eating too much even though it's no Carbs plus green doing some later than usual supper meals like 8-9 instead of 6-7.

So bottom line with the exception of Christmas day I'll be cooling it. On Christmas Day I'll splurge but DW is going to make a low cal chocolate pie dessert.
New Years I'll have my usual collard greens black eyed peas and some kind of pork. No parties planned at this point to contend with.

I think I'll be doing pretty much the same as I've been doing the last few years--basically being mindful. This does not necessarily mean avoiding any particular food, but limiting my intake. I do think about where I want to end up after the holidays and (try to) act accordingly. That said, if I gain a few pounds, it's not the end of the world. I still don't eat and carry on like I did prior to starting my weight management program. 'Enjoy in moderation' is a term that now resonates with me. The holidays are a good time to put that concept into action.
