When FOODS go WRONG......

11 months out and I am learning that certain foods will NEVER be tolerated. These doctors give you guidelines and nutritionists talk about portions and phasing. It’s what you have to learn on your own (as each of us is different) that can put you through hell via trial and error. I made a huge mistake eating a cup of “healthy” cereal with oats, nuts and berries, any kind of salad doesn’t go over well either and now, tomatoes and I must part ways. Any bisque or soup such as tomato basil will land me in the bathroom a dozen times, I steer clear of refined sugars for the most part but, ate half of a protein bar that had artificial sweetener....loss of energy, cramping, diarrhea. Dark chocolate doesn’t like me either. I need to go back to the protein fundamentals, chicken soup, broth, boiled eggs, poultry, fish, meat... plain no sauces. No salsa, no horseradish .... no cocktail sauce with cold shrimp either. Are you having difficulty with certain foods?

I was sleeved in April of 2016. I can’t drink soda. It physically hurts me. Also beer, it depends on the beer if I can drink it or not. Heavy whipping cream and I do not get along. That’s about it for me. I used to not be able to eat thick crust pizza but I can tolerate it now, not that I should be eating that.1

CrazyLife3Kids thanks for your post. Lovely picture and it’s good to hear from people who are a few years post op. I just made it through the Holidays, travel, parties... and it’s food, drink, appetizers, desserts everywhere. I tried a few things but ultimately, my sleeve and digestive tract reject anything sugary, or spicy 🌶. I feel like I live on cottage cheese, ensure, unsweetened applesauce and saltines. I have read about people who have had bypass that have “dumping syndrome” but read very little about sleevers who experience it as I do. I am stalled at 30 lbs from my ideal weight 1 year post op. Ultimately, I like carbs (sweet potatoes, pasta noodles) and, sometimes crave a breakfast biscuit although I am not a bread eater. I stay at 1200 calories a day but just stopped losing since Sept. it’s winter, I am less active and I need to literally get back on track. I am a size 14/16 but at 5’7 I would be happy as a size 12. In 2009 I was a size 8, hysterectomy...... weight shot up to 242. I don’t look like the same person in those old pictures. Sleeve was the best decision but, it has consequences both positive and negative.0

I am 8 months out from surgery and I can eat pretty much anything I want to. Around month 3-4 I ate two fast maybe 3 times and sort of spit up it's hard to describe but the food did not stay down. Since then I haven't really had that problem. Sweets are pretty much the only thing I don't tolerate well. I can have maybe 1/4 cup of ice cream, a small brownie, a small cookie etc. Any more than that and I am nauseated. I do not eat a typical post op diet or even American diet though if I did I may find more things I can't eat. I have been eating Whole food Plant Based for 7 years and continue to do so. Lots of salad, Rice, Beans, Vegetable, etc. I can eat about 8-10oz of food at a time.1

If I eat more than 3-4 oz of food, I get fluttering heart and feel nausea and weak. Heart specialist said the more I eat the more blood supply to the gut.... zaps my energy. Was advised to eat very small amounts vs 3 meals. He also advised me stay at 27 BMI, and that I don’t need to lose 30 more lbs.... 10 at most. I need to continue eating boiled eggs, cottage cheese, protein... I have had 2 salads and the fiber just causes digestive havoc. Worst mistake I can make is sucrose or sugar.... ate half a donut and felt sick. I feel like it’s a splurge if I can eat 1/2 of a BLT as a treat. Been popping zofran like candy so that I am not feeling like I have perpetual morning sickness. Anyway, now that the Holidays are over, I am getting back to my clear soups, sugar free popsicles, and Protein ensures. No more experimenting.... need to get to the finish line.0

I am six months post op. I have not had any issues with anything. I guess I am lucky.1

I have to be pretty careful and things I don’t expect can catch me out like smoked salmon. Sugar, carbs, fat can all be a problem but I don’t find it’s predictable all the time eg. Egg salad (no mayo) caught me out but I managed a small cookie no issues. Have to be careful with textures too eg. Chicken - I have to chew really well and eat slowly. I think I’ve got in a decent routine now so rarely have too much trouble. I do t eat out very often anymore but happy to save the money and calories tbh! Wouldn’t change it for the world though, I feel so much less controlled by cravings.
