Water treading vs swimming?

Do you get a comparable workout, and burn the same calories? I love to "swim", but a lot of my time spent in the water is water treading, as opposed to lap swimming. Anyone else?

Might be more like a water aerobics class.
Still burning but probably not as much as swimming.

I think it depends on how hard your body is working. Treading water for me would be like balancing on one foot on land. I could not count it as exercise. Swimming laps is a slow endeavor for me, so in order to burn a lot, I have to be in the water for a long time, or get my a** moving. Water aerobics is a killer because we have really skilled instructors who teach to the highest fitness level with a varied program of intervals (genuine Tabata drills), increased interval sets (15 seconds, 20, 25, 30, 25, 20, 15), and sustained cardio.
