I’ve been a member of the group for a while, but I just started this WOE on Monday, and I wanted to introduce myself. I was diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago and considered eating Keto then, but the nutritionist at my endocrinologist’s office talked me out of it. At Christmas I talked with my uncle who started eating this way about 3 months ago, and for the first time in over 20 years is off almost all medication, has lost weight, and has a normal A1c. He’s a pretty smart guy and had done his research, so he got me thinking, and I did my research before committing to trying two weeks to see how I feel. From Monday to Saturday my fasting blood sugar dropped 140 points, and I’m not seeing any spikes during the day; I’ve even seen it drop after eating. Needless to say, I think this experiment is working in my favor, even if I don’t lose a pound.
I really like the food I’ve been eating, mostly while food with the exception of a tomato sauce I used for one of the recipes. I do miss cookies, and I might try out some low carb recipes, but I wanted to try the first week with just meals and veggie snacks (it’s so nice to be able to dip them in dressing).
I’ve mentally set a limit of 50 grams of carbs per day, but reality has been closer to 30, so I might drop down.
So far it’s been a good journey. I’ve been sleeping better and getting in exercise each day. I will have my first official weigh in on Wednesday, so hopefully that will go well. Anyway, I just wanted to say hi so that when I post on the boards I won’t be a total stranger. Feel free to add me as a friend.

Welcome!! So glad you’re here and deciding to join this way of life!! It’s wonderful that you’re already seeing a positive effect on your blood sugar!! This way of eating is the best way for most diabetics to eat for controlling their blood sugar. I wasn’t a diabetic, yet, but both of my parents are, so it was only a matter of time!
Please read the part about electrolytes in the header section of the group page! There’s some vital information there that you must be aware of regarding this! Of course if you have questions after reading it please don’t hesitate to ask!
Again, welcome!! I look forward to watching your progress!!0 -
There's a bunch of good information around here, do read the stuff found in the stickies at the top of the page. What I've found over the years is there is no silver bullet for everyone, you'll have to experiment based on your own personal needs, goals, body and find out what works best for you.
I have a limit of 35g carbs a day based on a conversation with my dr over 4 years ago. Over the days, weeks, months, years that daily limit fluctuates. Don't worry about changing your personal limit at the moment would be my advice. Make sure you're really settled into this way of eating and that you're paying attention to the personal health markers you've set for yourself. In a few months start tweaking. Congratulations on all your progress so far!1 -
Thank you both. I'm going to keep reading and learning and settling into this new way of eating. I'm going to experiment with some new recipes each week, but I'm going to try to stick to mostly savory because I'm the person who will eat the whole box of Girl Scout cookies when given the opportunity. So far I've been drinking low carb hot cocoa to get my sweet fix, and that's been working pretty well.
I've been reading many of the sticky threads, so getting a good idea of what I should be expecting. I've had a few days of headaches, but no other symptoms of keto flu. I'm not sure if that's because my carbs are a bit higher or I've just lucked out or perhaps I'll get hit with it later. I've been making sure to get plenty of salt in my diet.2 -
Welcome! I'm still learning every day. I drank Powerade zero everyday when I first started and thought I had beat the keto flu but it snuck up on me about 3-4 weeks in. Powerade zero didn't have enough sodium to keep me going so I had to bump my sodium up. Good luck on your journey! This is a great group of people and they are so very helpful! I sent you a friend request 😊0
