We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for February are below:

Today's Topic: Feed a cold? Starve a fever? Throw in the towel?

What does your plan look like when you are struck by those viruses that seem to be abundant during the winter months? Any home remedies that you feel work well?

My plan doesn't really change based on illness, except perhaps to take in a bit more fluids based on thirst level.

As a pediatrician, I don't believe in "home-remedies." With the exception of a few meds targeting viruses, nothing has been shown to be useful for viruses and thus one simply needs to ride-it-out.

Day 9 for me. I've turned the corner so other than some coughing fits I'm feeling much better. I certainly have been drinking a lot of water which is probably the only reason my Fitbit step counts were decent last week. I had some days where nothing sounded appealing to eat so I ended up under budget, then others where everything that wasn't nailed down seemed to find its way into my mouth.

I did get to the fitness center each day as the incentive for a short workout was time spent in the steam room. The hot moist air was very soothing for my sinuses, throat, and lungs.

I'm in day 5 with this cold. Is pretty bad and may have to see Dr to get something. Trying to keep it out of my chest but think it's already hit bottom. Bad cough with this one. Trying to ride it out but not having much success.

As far as eating habits I'm same as @gadgetgirlil. I'm eating but just not really enthused about it.

Usually I am preoccupied with treating the symptoms and trying to survive. I also torture my family with pronouncements of my certain demise. I find that helps me feel better. My focus on intentional eating seems to lessen at times.

@imastar2 - sounds like you should get yourself to a doctor. Before my asthma was well controlled with modern medicines, what I have would have certainly sent me to urgent care with an asthma attack.

@myallforjcbill - LOL about tormenting your family about your certain demise! When my DH gets something like this, I swear he turns up the drama on his coughing to sound like he is going to die any moment. He refuses to take any cough syrup.

    With a cold, I'll eat almost anything/everything.

Definitely in the feed a cold camp. But I’ll feed a fever too. I’ll feed about anything except an upset stomach.

feeling like you are about to die makes it tough for me to be mindful about my food intake. The only positive thing that I can come up with is if I am really feeling bad I don't feel like going out to buy any kind of bad choices, and there are limits to the bad choices that I keep in the house.

Decades ago, I blew off a bad cold (sorta like I'd blown off taking care of myself) and it morphed into pneumonia--and THAT knocked me on my *kitten* for weeks. Since that time, I'm much more vigilant about taking care of Fall / Winter colds.

My first line of defense the last few years has been taking a Zicam at the first inkling of a symptom, as directed. Surprisingly to me, 95% of the time, it works. I can feel myself getting better (dropping symptoms) within 10 minutes. However, occasionally, it doesn't do the trick.

In those times, I tend to lose my appetite (fortunately) but out of habit, often consume large quantities of decent canned or homemade soups (chicken something, of course). I might have a slice of bread and peanut butter but usually I don't eat much of anything. Mainly I rest.

I am generally clear of symptoms within a few days. In fact, now that I think of it, in general, I think the duration and severity of symptoms are much less since the weight loss.

I do know that since that one time, I have not had pneumonia again.

When I have a fever food doesn't interest me and I eat very little. With a cold, it doesn't taste good but I eat some. Unfortunately, when I don't feel good, I don't cook, so I grab whatever is easy. Sometimes that's ok, and sometimes not so great.

As for remedies, I use coldeze if I think of it early on. Otherwise an occasional hot toddie in the evening is relaxing, but that's about it!

Like many folks I lose appetite anyway so don't feed a cold or a fever. Maybe some hot soup.
