We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for June are below:

Today's Topic: Recovery Periods

Whether we exercise a lot or a little, most of us go through periods of enforced idleness. Sometimes due to injury or illness, sometimes brief, sometimes longer. How do you handle these times?

I really don't mind the down time, EXCEPT for the dread of restarting. I really don't do too much, mat stretching, light weight work, and treadmill. However, even slight injury puts them on the back burner, until healed. Trying to still do the mat work, and simulate the weights (i.e. no weight, just fists), but the treadmill is hard, as I need to hold on (balance issues). Hopefully next week.

Like @Al_Howard, it's the oomph required to get started again that bothers me. During the actual downtime - unless it is due to illness - I try to stretch as much as possible without aggravating the injury.

I often lose weight when ill, injured, or hospitalized. I just literally do baby steps in recovery mode. Walk to the bath room walk to second house down from me. Walk around the block. Same with biking I bike in lowest gear on flatish roads. I start with über wimpy weights in the gym. Do easy stretches.

I try to find some little thing that I can do during these periods. For example, when I had emergency eye surgery in 2014, I had to be head down for 5 full days. My DH took me for short walks at the arboretum. All I could see was the ground, but it sure was better than laying face down on the bed.

I have a lot I can do when injured or I'll but doing it is another question. I might snack more than usual sometimes but really not a lot. Downtime offers some relief to catch up on reading and work related items on the computer. I've been very fortunate not to be down very long at a time. Last time was in 2011 for 3 months with an injury that kept me in a lift chair for 3 months. Even then I got out and worked with the help of DW driving me to appointments.
