Still overeating despite high fat eating

On previous attempts I found the high fat diet blunted my appetite and I yelled its praises from the rooftops and lost pounds.

However, I now find I am overeating meat/fat. I just don't seem to be able to stop myself. I feel ravenously hungry. This morning I cooked up a pound of minced beef with some onion, mushroom and mixed coloured peppers, the intention being to eat 1/4 of it, then another 1/4 later, an option of eating another 1/4 or not for supper, and put the rest in the fridge for tomorrow. In practice I took half and ate it, then 10 minutes later went back for the other half and thus consumed a pound of beef by 10am!

Other times I decide to have bacon and egg and will cook up five rashers of bacon and four or five eggs and eat the lot at one sitting.

Sometimes I manage to force myself to only cook (say) two rashers and one eggs, or only cook up 1/4lb of meat, but after eating that and still feeling hungry I will simply go back to the kitchen after say 15 or 30 minutes and cook up the rest.

I didn't used to be like this! The high fat enabled me to eat smaller portions.

I know that I MUST stop doing this. Excess protein at one sitting WILL convert into carbs.

My BMI is 61 and this is now life-threatening for me. I don't understand why that knowledge does not scare me into compliance.

Anyone got any tips, strategies, advice etc to combat overeating?

Sorry to hear of your struggle! I wonder if the mince (ground beef) you are eating really is high fat? It may be the high protein combined with the veg that is making you feel hungry. I don't seem to do well with mince and if I have it with potato and meat I am hungry again soon after. Try to find a more obvious source of fat if you think that helped in the past. Have you ever tried bulletproof coffee, some find that an easy satiation start to the day. It also gives you lots of choices for your other meals. Choose fatty cuts of meat, put butter on a few veg to go with it. Can you handle cheese, there are some great low carb high fat recipes for things like Chicken and Cheese casserole. Combined with the high fat it might help to really tighten up on the carbs. I do hope you find something that suits you, it's far better to make slow steady progress, than to quit completely just because of slip ups. Look at it as an experiment, if something doesn't work or doesn't suit your lifestyle and tastes try something else. Keep logging and posting :-).

    Thanks for replying.

It's not just with beef but anything. Last time it was chicken thighs that had been deep fried in coconut oil to make them super fatty. I always choose the fattiest meat (though it's getting harder and harder to buy it, lucky I still have an old fashioned butcher!)

It's a shame that I cannot bear the taste of coffee, as a whole culture seems to have grown up around drinking it!

My current huger levels frighten me. I wish there was a safe drug that would blunt it/kill it.

I will have to start logging my food intake again, I think!

Yes I think logging is an excellent suggestion! It's quite scary but what about opening your diary. We could probably then make more accurate helpful suggestions. I kept mine private for awhile as I was too ashamed to admit what I ate, I also didn't log some of my really bad episodes. However even though I still feel self conscious about my eating pattern it has also been quite cathartic having it open and logging everything. I think my initial reasoning was if I don't log it or no one can see it then it didn't happen!!!! The only person I was kidding was myself. Have a look at mine, it is by no means perfect and likely to be criticised by many but I am slowly heading in the right direction. We are all learning and adjusting that is why we are here. What calorie, carb level are you on? It's not easy taking control of our health, appetite but no one else can do it for us. As some on here quote " It's hard losing weight, it's hard being fat, pick your hard"!

Hi again, nice to see you! I wasn't sure if I had enough or any useful enough info to share but for what it's worth ... I'm still slowly succeeding with high fat. A recently made change which I'm loving is kind of fasting each day until hungryish which is working out on average fasting from about 8pm till 3pm. Then the one meal is quite substantial and enjoyable. I always have sugar free jelly and 25ml single cream for dessert so sometimes save that for later. I'm convinced high fat will work again for you and your menu maybe just needs tweaking as I've found with mine in the past. I've found the butter and coconut oil when I have them plus mayo seem to be both satisying and filling. I do cook minced beef and I'm thinking that doesn't fill me as well as some things. I also found some time ago that I needed to keep my protein a bit lower. I know you want this so much and I'm confident you're gonna get there! Do open your diary as people can really help then!

I'm just gonna toss some things out there for ya - just in case it helps...at least it'll give you some things to think about & try if ya want.

Are you eating/drinking stuff with aspertame? I ask because aspertame (as in drinking an entire can of diet soda) will trigger hunger for me.

Are you drinking lots of water (I drink more than a gallon a day) & keeping your electrolytes up? Without enough water + sodium/potassium/magnesium/calcium, etc I start feeling "weak" & my body thinks I need to "eat" more to get over that feeling.

Are you taking a multivitamin? In the past, I would crave things because my body needed "something". Maybe your body is lacking an important nutrient & you just haven't eaten "the right one".

If you don't like coffee, what about a really strong hot tea w/ heavy whipping cream when you first get up in the a.m.? That's a good way to get fat from the get-go. Or hot tea & a fat bomb. Find a recipe that appeals to you, make up a batch & have them at the ready. Another fatty drink I like is a cup of unsweetened almond milk, 1/4 of HWC & teaspoon of cocoa powder. yummm - chocolate milk!

Are your veggies high in fiber? Fiber will help with getting a 'full' feeling. And topping them with some butter or cheese helps with satiety because of the added fat.

Are you really eating enough every day? If you haven't already, try this keto calculator to get your macros & caloric intake

I think you're on the right track with logging. Look at your macros to see what might be too high or too low. I don't worry about sugar so in MFP I changed that one to fiber to make sure I'm getting enough.

ETA: here's some tips on configuring MFP for your macros, etc

Please keep us updated and friend me if you want!

ETA2: Oh - and coconut oil is great for cooking or adding to hot tea!

also make sure your not using those "sugar alcohols" they are sneaky and will keep you out of ketosis, Also atkins said some people are super carb sensative, and if your using the "NET CARB" plan I would drop that for a week, no vegies at all,, just your meat fat and eggs, I bet you go deep into KETO and your hunger goes away, there has to be some sneaky carbs in your diet some place that is causing this???

how much water are you drinking? drinking a ton of fluid helps keep you full. maybe down 16oz of water before eating? take out your portion and do not eat it until the food has been put away

also the obvious question, have you been to the GP recently and had a discussion about this with them? maybe they can help you find a safe way to take a good path.

YES, TAKE TEN PILLS A DAY SUPPLEMENTS

HELLO! I do not use any artificial sweeteners at all (well, I drink a Diet Coke about twice a year).

Most meals are now meat only, and my appetite has definitely diminished this week, since I wrote my original appeal above.

One thing that blunted it was a tin of tuna mashed up with mayonnaise, another was 5 eggs boiled and mashed, again, with mayo.

I was doing really well then today I impulse-bought two giant bags of crisps and have eaten them both -- that is 1000 calories and I dare not even look at the carb count.

Oh well, tomorrow is another day. I must lose 11lb in the next 23 days so I don't have any leeway for cheating!

I keep my food journal on fatsecret as I cannot get on with the one on here!

GP DISAGREES WITH MY EATING PLAN AND URGES ME TO EAT A LOT OF GRAINS AND SUGARS, WHICH MAKE ME ILL. GP WEIGHS ABOUT 280 LB AND HAS DONE FOR AT LEAST 20 YEARS.

Get a new GP or maybe go see a dietitian then. what I find helps me drink more water is to always keep a full waterbottle near by (for some reason glasses don't do it.) and force myself to drink from it every time I see it. just make it a habit if you want it or not.

Most meals are now meat only, and my appetite has definitely diminished this week, since I wrote my original appeal above.

Excess protein coverts to glucose. This will trigger an insulin response. Insulin drives cravings. My guess is that you are not in ketosis.

Keto is high fat, moderate protein. The foods you are describing eating are high protein, moderate fat. Even if they are fattier cuts, you are unlikely to get sufficient fat solely from meat (and eggs).

You need to add fat. Add butter and cream; add creme fraiche; add mayo or salad dressings to your meat. Eat pecans and macadamia nuts. Do not have any meals with only meat (heavy on protein)- fat must be with every meal. As a rough rule, try to eat a minimum of twice as many grams of fat as grams of protein. Your meal has 20 grams of protein? Make sure you've had at least 40 grams of fat with it.

Drinking water will also help you feel full, and you won't binge as much. Before going back for the rest of the minced meat, STOP! Drink a liter of water. You are unlikely to want more food right away if you drink that much water. And you'll have the added benefit of drinking the water that you need.

Always have keto-safe items on hand so you avoid those impulses . I used to carry cooked bacon, dark chocolate, and almonds in my purse - because I never wanted to be in that position where I broke my diet because I couldn't resist. At home, I always have several keto options (coconut custard tonight). When you feel weak, instead of having the second portion, eat something very high fat 80%+ calories from fat). It's the fat that satiates, not the protein.

Have you read Gary Taubes "Why We Get Fat?"; or Phinney / Volek "Art and Science of Low Carb Living"? Watched Fathead? Do these things! if you have, do them again! 80% of any lifestyle change is MENTAL. If you are doing impulse purchases of crisps, then your head isn't in the game. Some part of you is not fully committing. The first time I did low carb, I lost weight, but I didnt really see it as anything but a fad diet (and I actually believed it was probably unhealthy). I went back to eating carbs, and gained it all back (plus!). By educating myself, this time I understand the health aspects, and that helps me stay committed. There is no going back. Carbs are unhealthy (for me at lleast). I've watched Fathead 3 times, and will probably watch again sometime in the next month. It helps me reset myself mentally. Work on the mental aspect, and that will also help.

Are you getting enough sleep? I find that when I'm overtired, I'm over hungry and of course, I crave, crave, crave carbs.

I have days where I'm really hungry (having one today). I won't allow myself to indulge and will sometimes have to take a quick walk (even if it's only around the house or the block) to get my mind off of it. I also turn to other forms of exercise such as dancing (I like a free video that I found on Time Warner's On Demand), boxing, etc. Sometimes, I'll pick up a book to get my mind off eating.

I don't drink coffee either and I often have days where I struggle to get enough fat (I don't like to cook).

All GPs follow the same NHS advice, so even if I went through the long and difficult process of getting allocated to a GP who is miles away from me (and I have no car) the advice would be identical. I have seen dieticians, they all say lots of grains and fruit <sigh>.

I like the water bottle idea. Funnily enough I have a sports bottle by my bed and I always drink all of it overnight (each time I wake I have a dry mouth you see).

Nope, I tested last night - STILL not in ketosis. Must try harder.
The foods you are describing eating are high protein, moderate fat. Do not have any meals with only meat (heavy on protein)- fat must be with every meal.

Sorry I should have said, all the meat I eat is deep fried in lard so it's very fatty indeed. I have pork chops several times a week and half the chop is fat, plus it's fried in lard.

In an attempt to cut calories, this week I am doing a whole week on fish only. So now I have a paradox. If I add more fat, I am adding more calories!

Before going back for the rest of the minced meat, STOP! Drink a liter of water.

This is excellent advice. My problem is that I binge-eat on impulse, there is about a half a second for me to somehow take control. Or sometimes it feels like I am in a trance when I do it. But I will try harder.
Have you read Gary Taubes "Why We Get Fat?"; or Phinney / Volek "Art and Science of Low Carb Living"? Watched Fathead?

Yes, and I have watched many videos of lectures by many other docs and suchlike about low carbing.
If you are doing impulse purchases of crisps, then your head isn't in the game. Some part of you is not fully committing. Work on the mental aspect, and that will also help.

I think you are spot on. But it's NOT a lack of confidence in the diet. I've read enough about the nutrition side of low carbing to have satisfied myself that even an all-meat diet is nutritionally sound.

    It's me.

I was reading a book about overeating and it said that it's a lack of self esteem that causes people to sabotage their own weight loss efforts. I know that mine has taken a beating lately as a result of being crazy in love with a man who turned out to have NPD. (I'm having counselling for that.)

Thanks for all the good advice.

I'd like to report that, since 22nd when I last posted on this thread, I have not cheated even ONCE on my diet, and I have not been overeating AT ALL.

    Ain't that great?

Also, I told myself that I would eat only fish and boiled eggs for a week, and have kept faithfully to that pledge (7 hours to go!)

Moreover, I have performed aquazumba 4 times this week, walked home from the pool once, and walked to a shop en route home once (I always come home by taxi so this is a MAJOR breakthrough).

And, to cap it all, I am in ketosis!
