We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for September are below:

Monday - imastar2 (Derrick)
Tuesday - 88olds (George)
Wednesday - gavinflynn1 (Gavin)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Jimb376mfp (Jim)

Today's Topic: Pets! Do you have any? If so, do they help or hinder you in your weight loss journey? How so?

I do have pets, but they really have had no effect on my journey. The cats are aloof, and the dog lives in the country, so gets tons of exercise without my assistance. We had a horse, who passed this past Spring, and she did get me some exercise as I took care of her and rode her.

DW is an avid pet fan. I grew up with none but DW has been getting pets with us since our oldest son was 4 in 1973!

Currently have. 1 dog Sadie and two cats Otis and Daisy.

Walking the dog is one reason to get me up and get her out at least 2X a day. Used to walk more and enjoyed having a companion even it was just a dog.

Our beloved 9.5 lb Yorkie Miles eats 3 x's a day 7:30 am 12pm & 5 pm. DW does the feeding and 80% of the walking and other stuff he does. In a way he does hello in the weight journey because he will not leave us alone when it's time to feed him. No need for a clock. I can tal within 5-10 minutes of those times because he's ready.

Our kitties contribute to my mental health. Loretta, who spent 20 months in shelters before adopting us, is my early morning companion. It is nice to start the day with cat snuggles before I get out of bed and have to face reality. Cats also serve as a reminder to stay in the moment. They don't worry about the future nor obsess about the past.

The only pets I have right now are composting red worms. They do consume my kitchen veggie scraps and don't talk back. I did love my cat who sadly passed away and I loved my Borzoi and Collie too from the past. Weight loss? Hmmm not so much.
