We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for October are below:

Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - Imastar2 (Derrick)
Wednesday - gavinflynn1 (Gavin)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - goldenfrisbee (Chris)

Today’s topic:Concentration ? How much concentration do you put into a daily maintenance or loss program.
This topic can lead to many answers and there of course are many variations. Concentrating can also mean focuss but there is a difference in focus and concentration.

Dictionary.com / Concentration 1.the act of concentrating, the state of being concentrated. 2. exclusive attention to one object, close mental application

Dictionary.com / Focus 1. a central point, as of attraction, attention, or activity

I chose this topic today primarily for a couple of reasons. One I need to concentrate more on my daily weight loss activities. I do have focus but I haven't really been concentrating on the actual mechanics of weight loss. Motivation and focus are great but when the motivation is disturbed or the focus has been altered by specifics of a busy day then I find myself losing concentration. Concentrating at this point with my weight being where it is and health issues that are derived from obesity can in itself take over your mind. So do I exclusively dedicate my day to weight loss and of course the answer would be no but must I concentrate on ir daily yes because I have hit the point where a hit and a miss does not get it.

I must take the whole picture of weight loss and concentrate or give it my top number one priority. This means concentrating prior to each meal what I'm going to eat and how it is prepared and the point count or calorie count. I really do have to be on a mission just like when I started WW back in 2010 almost 10 years ago.

Never thought much about the differences. I would say my focus can be very blurred, but daily, I concentrate quite a bit about my weight loss. I double track (MFP AND WW), so that , in itself, requires some concentration. Add in dinner planning (same old same old breakfasts and most lunches) and our weekend slack on the reins, I'd say that I DO concentrate on my weight loss journey.

WW groups, meetings, and these boards do help keep my focus directed to the lifestyle. I am not sure how my concentration part works. I know what to do which is a given. True enough. I like the idea of concentrating on keeping staples in the house and using habit trails to use them in a healthy way. Eating out is more of an adventure although I do usually concentrate on looking at the menu ahead of time. I don't want to overstress myself. Getting ready to leave town and have already determined some of my eating choices which has normally been a habit for me. Will buy hard boiled eggs to eat with fruit and maybe a small roll for breakfast. Planning on a seasonal burger with Belgium fries one night and will share the fries. Catered dinner one night but usually good choices and reasonable smallish portions.

I'm hyper focused lately on upgrades to my bike to support credit card touring. I live for my weekends as the work days are super draining this semester. I recharge on the weekends with long bike rides/hikes.

As for food, that tends to be habit. I eat the same veggie filled omelette every morning. I pack my lunch bag every day. I keep the freezer and pantry stocked with staples. HB eggs and almonds are my go-to snacks during the work week.

I've kept a spreadsheet of my weight since 2001 with huge gaps in entries over the years. When I am LTL, I refer to this record at least weekly and input the new value every Friday. I'm not consistent at all with tracking, but I have a general awareness of where I'm at every day. I know I will do better when I focus on tracking.

I try to create healthy habits so that I don't have to overly focus or overly concentrate. But, there is a certain level of each, which is required to successfully accomplish the task at hand.

I think I am sometimes overly focused on food. I love food, though; so, the trick is to learn how to mitigate that over-focus.
