Illness and blood sugar levels

I'm new to this. I got my diabetes diagnosis (high a1c) 4 days ago. I've spent most of those days knocked flat by bronchitis. I just got my glucometer (Freestyle Lite) and strips today with instructions to test my blood sugar thrice weekly. I performed a check to ensure I knew what I was doing. It came back 418. Per the instructions I performed a second test (same hand, different finger) and got a reading of 448.
My question is: how badly is the bronchitis going to skew my regular blood sugar?
I'm going to ask the doc for a control solution tomorrow to eliminate the possibility of a faulty glucometer

Hi MarkR. Illness can cause your blood sugars to rise significantly. That's pretty high, so try to rest, drink plenty of fluids(sugar free) and get better soon. It may not be a faulty glucometer, but rather a bad strip, so control solution will eliminate that problem. Good luck with this new journey.1
