We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for September are below:

Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - Imastar2 (Derrick)
Wednesday - gavinflynn1 (Gavin)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - goldenfrisbee (Chris)

Today’s topic: What strategies do you use when you don't feel like sticking with the plan, whatever that is, in your journey?

I was thinking about the last forty years of my life, and I've really only tried to lose weight 4 times. (Not counting wrestling in high school) I always do well for a while, and then I get tired of being good. The newness wears off and because I'm already feeling much better than when I started, I lose focus and then fall back in to the old ways.

Now that I'm 60, I can't carry all this excess weight without severely affecting my health and ability to move. And I'm probably only a few years away from knee replacement surgery.

So I don't have an answer to post, just looking for some advice to keep moving towards my goal.

I am sort of there right now. But for me it comes down to taking a breath thinking about why I want to do this and starting again slow and easy. Kind of like driving an old car.

If I don’t feel like sticking to THE PLAN, I plan a modification. I never considered myself off plan. I always cringe in meetings when people say they’re “off plan. Why not tell the truth? Just come out and say that you quit.

Early on I made a mistake mid week. To cover my error, I had to dip deep into my WPA. It was depressing. No matter how I finagled the numbers, I didn’t have the points for my regular Saturday lunch at Pita Inn. That lunch followed my big Saturday morning workout.

I was bummed out big time. What to do? More exercise? Risk of injury. Plus the time. Maybe quit for the week? Dangerous to the entire project. This one mistake was now a WL existential threat. Gee if I only had just 5 more WPA in the bank. I needed a solution.

How about I just “give” myself 5 more WPA? I’m not off plan because I’m still planning. My week is just going to go pretty much as it was supposed to, I just made that one mistake. So that’s what I did. I probably did that a couple of times per year when counting WW points.

I have quit tracking last couple weeks. Doing Intuitive Tracking on Maintenance. Yesterday WI was no change, below GW 5# so I have a cushion. If I gain I will go back to tracking and change from Maintenance to Lose rate.

I do what some call "intuitive maintenance". I like to think of it more as "memorized maintenance" as I have the portions and foods in my brain. I have at times drifted above my goal weight but not enough to have to pay for WW meetings. I have said I would go back to tracking if I had to pay. Living dangerously for now.
