Catered events - ack!

I spent this weekend at an event that was catered. Very well catered. There were buffet meals with a million options and more than enough for twice the number of attendees, an eight-course dinner on Saturday night, and cake and biscuits on the side at all times.
You can guess how this went. It may have been the most epic multi-day binge of my entire life; to give you an idea of magnitude, on Sunday morning I had about five slices of cake, two bowls of custard, assorted biscuits, and some cheese on crackers BEFORE BREAKFAST.
Has anyone had any success in handling events with free-flowing food?
