It's the end of the first week. How did it go?
I hit my goal for strength workouts (4 days), but didn't run at all (goal was three short runs). I hate running.
What about everyone else?

Restarting. This is now my first week, had a relapse into bad habits due to illness and not having a plan of what to eat when I’m sick (just posted in the other thread). I am eagerly back on plan after suffering agonising pain from too much fibre this morning and will be doing extra time on carnivore to make up for the lost weekend. I must have a self destruct flaw as I keep doing this over and over!0
-
I didn't do exactly carnivore for week 1...had some beans and nuts and such that were not carnivore...plus chips as a splurge on the traveling weekend this past Saturday...so...I will try again with week 2 and attempt to be more on-target with the carnivore thing!
I really need to plan ahead better...being gone over the weekend meant I never did my usual shopping and I ran out of carnivore eats and just ate what I had rather than shopping...so, better planning for week 2 should improve the results!1 -
A little frustrating do really well earlier in the day but haven’t managed a whole day yet - today has been way off base as haven’t been able to be carnivore at all today as not been in control of my food but hoping tomorrow will be better - one goal I have finally hit has been logging a whole days food without missing anything2

Great although I saw Frank Tufano's video about iron overload so I'm incorporating a few more veggies, avocados which are high in copper, and lower iron meats. I probably don't have to worry about iron overload but it definitely is something to consider. I'm still keto carnivore or 80-90% carnivore. I'm going to eat more pork because it's tasty for one thing and cheaper. I also want to eat baked in butter chicken thighs if I can find some with skins still. I'll still have ribeyes and strip steaks but not every day. I like tuna for omega 3s. I choose skipjack tuna because it's lower in mercury than albacore and high in niacin which is great for many things. I'm definitely not zero carb but I'm happy with a few plant foods as well.0

There are several reasons Frank is not accepted by the majority of the carnivore/zerocarb community and has been banned from just about every group I am part of. And, it is not because I am getting paid off by Cargill. LOL1
-
Do you have any info on iron overload or it's not a concern at all? I admit Frank seems paranoid at times but has some good info. I looked up Shawn Baker and he says on twitter he doesn't have any signs of iron overload with 4 lbs. of steak a day for who knows how long?0
-
It is a concern only for people with a very specific genetic disorder and those who receive frequent blood transfusions. Your body will not absorb excessive amounts of iron from your food, if you have enough. It is a non-issue.
Granted, I am a blood donor. I was one long before I became a carnivore, though. My iron levels are never outside the normal range. I have gone long periods of time without donating, and my iron levels have been similar to when I donate frequently.
Iron is something your body regulates just fine on its own. In the rare cases where it doesn't, it is because of a genetic disease or because of health issues where you receive blood donations (because injected blood bypasses the regulatory mechanism in the gut).1 -
Ok thank you. I don't have any signs of iron overload so far and have been eating a ton of steaks.0

I’m thinking of going animal products only finally. I’ll probably never go zero carb because I love dairy. I’m weightlifting again and doing VR boxing.1
-
Dairy is perfectly acceptable for zerocarb. The name is misleading.1

I knew that, I just forget things fast. I try to read all I can on carnivore.0

As for Frank, I usually don't talk about him. Some of his information is good, but I would take most of his conclusions with a serious grain of salt. I probably know more about him than I want, and I have been around since before his first arrival in the carnivore scene.
The only thing I will say is that he managed to get banned from Principia Carnivora! That group allows nearly anything. Heck, they talk about coffee enemas and drinking urine. Frank managed to get himself unwelcome even among them. They accept everyone who eats a meat heavy diet, even ones that most wouldn't consider carnivore.1 -
Ok thanks for help on zerocarb and for the info on Frank, he must have been pretty terrible to be banned from that group. I won't be so trusting of his info just like any youtube video and do further research. I think I have the carnivore diet figured out for myself using nutritional databases if not I'll be asking the Carnivore group. The diet has no nutritional deficiencies that I can see. I know just eating almost all animal products has been completely life changing. It's also easy and not too bad cost wise.

He isn't a bad guy. Much of his issue is that he abusively attacks anyone who doesn't agree with him or even questions what he says. When people pointed out that thousands have thrived without complicating this way of eating, he lashed out and made videos bashing people and groups. Most of those are deleted now.
Actually any post and video before a certain date was deleted. Mostly because some of those posts and videos did not support his more recent claims for how long he has been carnivore.1 -
He sounds like some of the people on mfp from years ago.
I do worry on the diet about micronutrients like chromium, boron, molybdenum, copper, etc. I know Redmond salt contains trace amounts of minerals though. I guess I should be more concerned with the effects of obesity than micronutrients.0 -
As an aside, I went and watched like 4 of his videos. I haven't watched any in ages. He is really harping on the iron overload thing. He also complains about reddit a lot. Which is funny, because he makes it sound like we are the problem. He still thinks I am being paid off by big meat. I wish.1

A lifetime supply of ribeyes would be awesome. Today, I had ground beef. I checked. It was Cargill ground beef! Maybe I am a shill!1

Alright, I know I said I wasn't going to talk about Frank.
But, I just got news that all of his reddit accounts have been suspended. We have been dealing with his misbehavior for over a year and trying to work with the admins about it. He had half a dozen accounts, or more, that he was using to try and get around the bans. It looks like something was finally done. I have no details about whether or not it is permanent. He has been suspended before, and came back and started the same stuff again, so I think it could be.
Also, apparently Vegan Gains had been digging around in Frank's history on reddit and made a video of it. Lots of things in it that point out why he isn't as accepted as he wants to be.

I can confirm that coldhds was Frank's original reddit account. I spent a lot of time talking directly to him through that account. And VG is only finding the posts that were not deleted. There were HUGE numbers of posts that Frank deleted when he kept getting called out on his claims for how long he has been carnivore, health issues he claims came from carnivore, etc. There were videos too, but those have also been deleted. Frank tried, very hard, to scrub that history clean, but he missed some because he wanted to have at least some visible history. The stuff on here is the best of the worst stuff about Frank.
I hate Vegan Gains. I seriously find most of his videos annoying and outrageous. I mean, go figure, since he is vegan and I am the opposite. But, his videos about Frank are pretty on point (and he has several).1 -
I didn't watch the whole video. I guess I don't really care too much. Frank seems to like offending people which is not a good habit if you want people to listen to you. Some of his thumbnails are in very poor taste. I haven't really watched that many of Frank's videos but I did subscribe which I'll undo. Iron overload just happened to be something I was interested in. I like carnivore shopping hauls the most. Frank thinks most of the carnivore foods in the store are of low quality. I would say otherwise. You can get healthy on conventional meats. YouTube is not the best for health info since anyone can post a video. I am guilty of using it way too much. I try to read books now of the authors the Low Carb and Carnivore groups on here recommend. I have a lot of the books but haven't taken the time to read them completely. I try to take advice from the experts on here like you. Also that's the first Vegan Gains video I've watched since I don't care about the vegan perspective. They can say protein doesn't matter and lose most of their muscle mass and be frail and sickly. My sister was almost vegan but now she eats beef, poultry, fish, and eggs. She still doesn't eat pork due to a childhood trauma seeing a pig get killed. The butcher started butchering it before it was dead.

I try and stay out of the drama. Unfortunately, it gets brought to me several times a week. I end up watching more videos (from both sides) than I wish, but I review (or other mods review) videos before posting them. Frank isn't a horrible source of information, but his conclusions are often a stretch and his perception of things is not reliable. I'm not saying you need to unsubscribe to his channel, just be aware that he speaks with far more authority than he should. The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.
Just finished my lunch today (late lunch). Make some burgers that were 50/50 sausage/ground beef. So tasty.1 -
I don't envy being a moderator.
I'm pretty certain that a meat based diet is the best for me. I do have a lot of doubts for other things but just ask questions here or consult a nutritional database.
Sausage and ground beef mixed is super tasty. I'll have to hit the supermarket for some.
I had 8 scrambled eggs and melted Swiss cheese for dinner.1 -
Random Reading for the Day: http://www.gnolls.org/1444/does-meat-rot-in-your-colon-no-what-does-beans-grains-and-vegetables/It turns out that pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and our other proteases do a fine job of breaking down meat protein, and bile salts and lipase do a fine job of breaking down animal fat. In other words, meat is digested by enzymes produced by our own bodies. The primary reason we need our gut bacteria is to digest the sugars, starches, and fiber—found in grains, beans, and vegetables—that our digestive enzymes can’t break down.
Now what is that called, again, when food is being ‘digested’ by bacteria…?- rot \ˈrät\ (verb) — to undergo decomposition from the action of bacteria or fungi
In other words, meat doesn’t rot in your colon. GRAINS, BEANS, and VEGETABLES rot in your colon. And that is a fact.
…And That’s Why Beans Make You Fart“Can Humans Digest Meat?”
“Because I had such an extremely short bowel, my output was very high because no absorption had taken place. I was fed and hydrated by infusion and could literally live without eating or drinking at all. Because of my excessive output, we had to make a rig that had a hose extending from the ostomy bag that drained into a one gallon jug. Often the hose would get clogged and my wife or sister would have to use a coat hanger wire to unplug it. Now if vegan pseudoscience is right, we would suspect that the hose was being plugged by pieces of meat.
“Never once did we see any solid chunks of meat. I became so curious about this that I once swallowed the largest chunk of meat I could possibly get down without choking. Because of the shortness of my bowel, it only took about twenty minutes for my stomach to empty into the ostomy. Better than two hours later, there were no signs of any meat chunks. What was always clogging the ostomy tube were pieces of vegetables that were not fully chewed.
“Entire pieces of olive, lettuce, broccoli florets, grains and seeds were found. Yet, large pieces of fat were never witnessed. As a matter of fact, all the fat from the meat was already emulsified by the bile into solution. Over time, fat would coagulate on the side walls of the ostomy bag, but never were there any solid pieces observed.”2 -
That site is great. Lots of good info. I'm still going to eat veggies occasionally but you convinced me to get rid of them completely for now. I hope oxalate dumping isn't as bad as they say.1
