Trail Running in the Winter in New England

Hello! I just joined C25K because I would like to slowly reintroduce running into my life, which I loved for many years but stopped due to overexercise and a need to find some balance in my life. I have done that and, five years later, I am going slow with rediscovering my fitness passions, and practicing doing them in moderation for health, rather than for other reasons.
So. I need to begin slowly.
I was out walking my dog on the beautiful trails by my house in rural MA, and I just started a light jog. And I was like "this feels amazing!" Of course, it was tough work, and I just jogged slowly for a few minutes at a time.
But I wondered: does anyone here trail run in winter when the ground is snowy and icy? What are your tips? Do you recommend any gear?
I used my YakTraks, and also kept a deep bend in my knees, and this was helpful.
Thanks!
