We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.nn

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Topic: Nutrition

Some of us are on WW, some not. When I was on WW, I just trusted the plan would guide me to healthy eating. How do you ensure your lifestyle has you eating a nutritionally healthy diet. Do you trust the system? Do you speak with a nutritionist? What do you do? How do you monitor it? Is it important to you?

Alt Question: How do you take your coffee? (Hint: the answer is black)

One of the reasons I use MFP is nutrition tracking capabilities. As I got older I wanted to be better informed. After I dumped WW, I enjoyed being able to see what I was eating. Before I went on Medicare I had access to a nutritionist through my insurance. She made some changes to the MFP standard allocation (a bit more lean protein, a bit less carbs/sugar) and had me vary my daily goals when I plateaued or was getting bored. It helped quite a bit. My goal this year is to become more nutritionally aware and informed. My lifestyle approach is not just quantity but quality for improved health.

    Alt Question: Black and dark

I'm sill on WW (Blue Plan), and also track on MFP (trying to keep sodium down, and protein up).

Alt Question: How do you take your coffee? (Hint: the answer is black)[/quote] Yup, black and NO SWEETENER!

I am a nutrition autodidact. I read a lot about the subject, from a breadth of sources. I find it interesting. I try to apply that knowledge in a consistent and healthful manner with regard to what I consume.

I plan (hope?) to have good nutrition based on following WW Plan (Green).
I know I have not been eating enough vegetables, I plan to get better preparing and planning more balanced meals.

    Coffee;
Prepare Kuerig K cups made with hazelnut flavored coffee and add SF hazelnut creamer.
I quit the artificial sweeteners after joining WW.
When I order Dunkin Donuts coffee I specify ONE cream. I found that they usually add four to a large iced coffee!!!

I need to find time to pay more attention to my macronutrients in MFP. At this point, just staying on top of tracking as I go through the day is about all that I can handle as I continue to do 2 positions here at my job.

Coffee - can't stand the smell of it. Don't like the taste of it in things like mocha ice cream. I get my caffeine fix from my Zevia cola and also green tea (plain).

Well at least I learned a new word today!
What are the most important areas (top 3-5) to pay attention to getting my nutrition?
    Protein? Carbs? Fats?

I just count Smart Points :frowning:

I strive for balance. If you are diligently following Smart Points - and the intent of that program - you are almost certainly achieving balance.

At different points in our lives we need different things. Medical conditions often dictate those needs (e.g., diabetes and the reduction of carbs). But, aging itself can dictate our needs (e.g., calcium issues as our bones age). That is why educating oneself is important. Then, when you perceive a need, you can discuss it with a professional to help mitigate those problems.

The plate model is a pretty good place to start. If you follow it, you're going to be pretty balanced. Here is a link to an explanation of the plate model: https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/healthy-eating-plate/

Obviously, any approach to nutrition can be perverted. Fried chicken, however tasty, is not a very healthy protein. And, we often get hung up with the idea that meat is the only source of protein. It's not.

For me, variety is important. For others it is not. In either case, balance is the key.

    JMHO. YMMV.

Oh, yeah. Black coffee, no sugar, usually an Americano. Occasionally, I'll drink a cold brew, which I prefer with a touch of cream.

I have always been online only with WW and like most have seen the plans change through the years. Hence for years I've attempted to track both. Honestly I don't trust the WW model for overall nutritional results. A couple of years ago I began to see a nutritionist at my hospital she resigned and they finally hired a new one last year. She was not fond of the WW model at all. However she was familiar with MFP and had patients tracking on it and accepted it.

Nutrition as she defined it was a very balanced plate and wanted me to adopt that program. It only made sense to me but following it is another story. Rounding up grains, proteins, fruit, vegetables, and dairy can be challenging at best but I know it makes the most sense. Now going along with this nutrition is balancing the portions. We discussed tracking measuring and her plan was to measure the protein by the palm of your hand and keep proteins to 70 g's day. Keep it to one grain and splurge on the vegetables.

In recent months I've been dealing with heart issues culminating in a pacemaker being put in on 1/22/20. This has completely changed my metabolism make up. My heart bpm went from 34 to 65-80 and my body is processing calories in a normal way because prior to surgery I was gaining fluids like crazy and couldn't control weight no matter what I did. So now I have a valve replacement coming up in about a month and that will hopefully get me where I can begin to walk without being breathy.

Drink my decafe coffee black except occassionally for a treat put some skim milk and stevia in it in the early evening for a treet.
