We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.nn
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Topic: Measuring vs Estimating
I am dusting off an old topic. Back in ye olden days when someone would complain about being on plan but not losing or gaining, the first barrage of responses was usually around portion control. "Are you weighing and measuring everything? EVERYTHING?" There was at least one WW meeting a year focusing on our estimates vs reality. How much estimating do you do in your quantities. How often do you do a reality-check on your estimates?
Alt Topic: Read any good books lately?

I got quite a motivational kick in the tuchus on Sunday when I was in a back care class and saw myself in a full-length mirror. So I have been more attentive to things and found that my estimate of a Tbsp of lite mayo was wishful thinking and this morning I measure out a Tbsp of a spread for a slice of sourdough toast and found it to be way more than I thought. So clearly I need to recalibrate. I generally am pretty good about weighing and measuring while cooking since there is often a recipe involved, but in more casual food prep, I find I wing it. So I will be a bit anal about this going forward since as I think about things I realize I estimate more than I thought.
Alt Topic: Just finished book 4 in Patrick O'Brians Aubrey-Maturin series (Master & Commander). This is my second time through the 20 book series. I tell my wife I am going off to sea with Lucky Jack Aubrey to keep England free from Napoleon's wandering eye. I am now starting "Seeking Whom He May Devour" by Fred Vargas. She is a French mystery rider my son introduced me to a couple years ago.1 -
I feel I need to re-calibrate my eyeballs every few months, to prevent portion creep. Most stuff is weighed all the time. Weighing is so much more accurate than cups, and most of the time you can find foods weights in the trackers.1

I measure some things but have developed a better sense of estimating skills too. Good to think about for sure.1

I am just not very good with estimating quantities. I have tried and tried and I'm sure I over estimate, so I just have to measure foods when eating at home. I still have an issue 10 years later with estimating. I eat out at least e-5 times a week so during those times I'm being extra careful not to over estimate the quality. So far it's working fairly well post pacemaker surgery.0

Portion creep happens if I don't use my kitchen scale.0

Oh and I use my eskimo mittens to determine hand size for estimating!

Even if I’m not tracking, which is most of the time now, my food scale is always out on the counter. I use it every day.

I am a lousy estimator and have to rely on the food scale.
