Topic: Aging
Many of us have been around for a while and are not quite as young as we once were. Aging brings change. Health issues arise, capabilities change and perhaps even our perspective or approach to things changes.
How has aging impacted your healthy lifestyle approach? Have you found easier or more difficult to stay the course?
What have you found helpful?
Alt Question: How do you take your coffee? (hint: correct answer is black).

I have been thinking about this quite a bit lately. I have a bad knee that caused me to stop running 6 years ago and do any significant hiking. I have Degenerative Disc disease that forced me into retirement a couple of years early and limits my activity often. I always assumed regular cardio etc would need to be part of my lifestyle if I wanted to lose weight and keep it off and frankly I have gained quite a bit of weight over the last 5 years. But I have learned it is possible to lose weight without all the exercise and am doing so once again. I find I am a bit more calm in how I approach my lifestyle now. I used to be fairly intense in weight loss mode. I approached it like I would a project at work. I find it easier to take it day by day and realize this will take time. The "lifestyle" seems more like a lifestyle and less of a project.

After a lifetime of being overweight I kept losing/gaining until I reached 376# at age 65.
2013 I changed my Lifestyle and promised my son/family I WOULD TRY! FRom age 65-68 I lost weight and then decided to reach Goal Weight
2018 age 70 reached GW and Lifetime. Then two back surgeries in 14 months. I know without WW I would be in terrible shape.
During my weight loss I seemed to have accepted that I had a lifetime of enough fast food, junk food, bad eating habits and said ENOUGH!
I took the same approach to beer in 2005 when I quit drinking. Sometimes when you live long enough you learn how you CAN CHANGE!
I have been on Maintenance since reaching GW March 2018, always below GW. Proof that you can teach an OLD DOG new tricks.
Alt Question: Coffee with SF Hazelnut creamer1 -
I lost weight in 2 stages. Age 44-45 I lost about 60 lbs. Age 55-56 I lost the last 40 lbs. I think I did what I could do when I was ready. I wasn’t grown up enough to do tracking before I was 55. So I think my age has done nothing but help.
I’ll be 70 in a few weeks. I put a lot of effort into being fit and active. As a result, I spend some effort managing aches and pains and trying to work around some limitations. All just part of the process. I am firmly convinced that I wouldn’t have made it this long without weight loss. Changed everything for me.
Alt?- Black. When I started drinking coffee, there wasn’t anything that I found that made it taste any better. Eventually Pavlov came into play and I started to like the taste that I associated with the caffeine buzz.1 -
Between my knees and back issues, I find even "real" walking (on the road or even treadmill, too painful for significant mileage. I do get around 5K/day fitbit steps, just doing the everyday stuff.
Tracking has been my best defense to at least maintain. Working on the losing path again.
BLACK - just good, strong dark roast.1 -
Between my asthma and back issues, I am unable to do all the walking that I've done in the past. That has presented some problems because now I have to focus more on food rather than activity to keep the weight in check (for the most part).
Getting old sucks. But it beats the alternative.

As with everyone else, aging and physical issues seem to go hand in hand. Some physical issues can be powered through - I learned to do that as a high school athlete - but that is not usually the wisest thing to do. Other physical issues are more difficult to power through. Sometimes they require some assistance to mitigate. However, there usually is something that can be accomplished.
I also think mental fatigue may increase with age, which can impact the desire to participate in any activity.
Coffee - usually black for coffee or Americanos...the occasional cold brew with milk or a latte.1 -
coffee? black black or black. Getting older indeed suxxxx. walking is ok and reasonable biking up to maybe 35 or 40 miles?? Definitely some health issues. Walking down a mineshaft steep hill would do my knees in I think. Doing what I can.1

Seems to be a theme here! At 69 (in 6 weeks) I cannot do as much in the way of exercise, and especially not the kind of exercise I did as a younger man, but I still try to get in some, I manage about 8-9 K fitbit steps on a quiet day and closer to 12 to 14 K steps on an active day and I am starting to spend more time in the pool at the gym as opposed to running or hiking.
Coffee a splash of 1% milk1 -
As one of my residents at the retirement community would always say, "Growing older isn't for sissies".
Running is no longer an option thanks to arthritis in my left knee. I'm also finding that 13-15 miles is about as much as my knee wants to hike. I did do a couple of longer hikes (~20 miles) last fall to prepare for finishing up a long segment of the Ice Age Trail but I was really hurting those last several miles.
My longer distance cycling (>100 miles) didn't happen until just a couple years ago. I do find that doing a 200K leaves me a little wiped out the next day so it isn't a good idea to do a Sunday 200K if I have to work on Monday. A 300K trashes the whole weekend. I did 2 @ 300K rides plus another ride of ~250K last summer. I don't feel the desire to repeat that experience.
I'm really wiped out the days that I have to work 11-12 hours. I used to be able to do that all the time when I was younger but not any more.
Coffee? Never have liked the stuff, not even the smell. So whoever wants mine can have it.1 -

I'd take your allotment of coffee, but my doctor wants me to cut down. That's all they say, cut down coffee, diet cola, calories, fat, carbs, ans (worst of all) beer. LOL1 -

I believe what Al meant to say is that he and I will share your coffee.
