Non Scale Victories (NSVs) are the most significant positive result from improvements in your healthy habits.
Here are a few NSV ideas from an online blog:
Jeans that don’t feature muffin tops anymore.
Toned arms.
Compliments from others.
Extra energy.
Increasing your weight during a squat or other weight-lifting exercise.
Being able to run a mile without stopping.
Less cravings.
Relieved pain.
Being able to do a full unassisted pull-up.
Waking up refreshed instead of groggy.
The doctor’s “okay” to eliminate a medication.
Running your first 5k.
Smaller measurements (using a measuring tape).
Shinier hair.
Clearer skin.
Shaving time off of your mile.
Feeling more confident.
Increased productivity.
Not feeling winded after going up a flight of stairs.
Clothes not pinching anymore.
Having to cinch your belt a hole tighter.
What NSVs are you celebrating this month?8 -
My main NSV is that I am still here, posting daily, with only one Pass Day so far. I have started this challenge more than once and infallibly crashed out halfway through. I intend to stay the course this time, with or without Winners' Circle. Weight loss helps, I'm wearing trousers one size smaller, my profile sideways doesn't look so pregnant any more and from the front it looks quite appealing. It's altogether amazing I've got this far, as the current restrictions have taken away many things that made my life pleasant.16

My NSV
I have started inching my daily calorie setting veeeeerrryyy slowly from 1200 / day towards what MFP recommends as maintenance for a sedentary person my age / height / target weight (1420 / day)
As of Monday, April 13, I am at the second step of +50 calories to 1300 / day
I have to really work on keeping the extra calories earlier in the day, and my fitbit daily NEAT calorie burn number sufficiently up to cover the difference, plus a bit more as I will be needing to cover more to keep on breaking even as I continue to the next step next week. And this with working from home and less general out-and-abouting than would be usual.
So far, I am breaking even.14 -

Exercised: Yes (3km in 24 mins - hills)
Tracked: Yes
Budget: Yes
Quick walk today. Had an afternoon phone conference and had only 30 mins to get walk in.
Today was a challenging day. Daughter got flu shot. This is stressful for her at the best of times (and now is not the best of times). Managed to keep her calm enough to have the injection.
Also had a call from the hospital that checked my eye last week. Summary, I am not allowed to drive a vehicle for 4 to 6 weeks since it was concluded that I had a mini-stroke in the arteries of that eye. Good thing that my wife can drive and that I am fit enough to walk most places. Still upsetting though.
Only stroke risk category they could put me in was high total cholesterol, but no breakdown of LDL/HDL/triglycerides was done. They prescribed me a statin, but family history with statins is near fatal, so looking at other alternatives after breakdown is obtained. Not willing to risk complications, so erring on the side of caution with this one.
The blanket recommendation of losing 5-10% of body weight is not really a viable option. I'm sure I COULD do it, but pretty sure it would do more harm than good.
The whole episode with the mini-stroke in the eye has called into question my understanding of nutrition and challenges whether I am doing the right thing. Rightly, or wrongly, it makes me feel like I have failed.
To adopt a low cholesterol, gluten free diet will be a challenge in a household where my wife's diet is largely keto (high fat, low carbohydrate).
On to NSV's then.
Despite having had the eye problem, most factors seem to indicate I am reasonably healthy:
- CT scan showed no evidence of issues
- Ultrasound of major artery in the neck shows no sign of narrowing
- My blood pressure is on the low side of normal (110/69)
- My HbA1c is good (5.2 - no hint of diabetes)
- Fitbit reports my cardio fitness as 53-57 (excellent)
- Estimated body fat is under 15%
I also fit into clothes I wore when competing at elite level when ice skating over 20 years ago.
My eternity ring is worn on my middle finger as it falls off my ring finger.
Sorry for the long post.16 -
Pass day three8

My NSV, the belt I wore a year ago along side the one I am wearing today. Picture, this one anyway, is worth 1,000 words.

@craigo3154, do not apologize for the long post! Your NSV's are truly inspiring and worth every bit of space they took up in your post!!
Yes, definitely get a breakdown before you decide on any new course of action. You sound like you are in excellent physical health, so I imagine the reason for the eye stroke is baffling you! Feeling like you failed is so unfair, but I get it. (hugs)13 -
NSVs include buying a size smaller underware and they fit, donating another full large garbage bag of clothes because all are too big, being able to use a 16-foot pole trimmer and trim trees without passing out, and an overall feeling of well-being.
I am looking forward to reading other's NSVs.11 -

Starting a low dose of statin, but will be monitoring very carefully. Hopefully I do not have my parents reaction to them (especially my mothers).
Also working with wife as to how to change my diet. Time to develop a whole new set of preferences.

Dannnnng!
Life has taken yet another turn, as a third of my team have taken a four-week furlough, which I totally encouraged.
So much has happened to me this week, as I outlined in the “What’s On Your Mind” thread, so I won’t recap, here.
Did I exercise at least 20 minutes? Yes. 65 minutes of walking this morning for my oxygen inventory.
Did I log everything? Yes.
Did I come in under calorie goal? Yes. ☹️ I am beyond stressed out. Everything that passes through my lips comes out one way or another within an hour or two.
I contacted our mental health rep via email this morning because, quite frankly? I’m losing my *kitten*.
I cried in front of my boss, then again in front of my team yesterday, as well as a few other times behind my closed office door. I am NOT a crier. I’m not sleeping well, and when I do sleep? I’m having nightmares.
My regular therapist closed her doors the day of my last appointment, so I am scrambling hard to find someone in the interim.
I asked for the furlough, but was told no, because nobody else can fill my shoes, so I will be taking 8 hours of PTO each week, as mandated, on Fridays where I can for as many three day weekends as I can until this is all over.
Y’all? Please stay healthy, stay home where mandated and do your parts.
Also check on your healthcare worker friends. We are not okay. 😭14 -
Not really celebrating any NSVs this month as I've been struggling a bit with maintaining my weight loss. I originally lost 61 lbs on Weight Watchers and I've let about 30 of it creep back on. So I rejoined WW this past Saturday -- although I'll still be on MFP just as much for awesome challenges like this one! -- and I hope to have some new NSVs to celebrate next month. Although I still can run a half-marathon, so that's good!
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? 2 mile treadmill run + 34 minutes strength this morning
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes and under
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yep!12 -
3 yeses, it was a good day!7

on track day
= 3 x yes
Can't quite think of NSV.
Definition in hip flexor muscles. Not something I be showing at the beach I guess.
Nevermind that.Got some good climb today. Couple of hill repeats at 1000 each.
Patched up my sagging average a little bit. 933 per day. My goal is 1000.
It was cold. 26 at my house but like 31 at the trail head car park.
Not really a trail, it was blacktop. Very little traffic. There was a runner there that I was kind of pacing.
I took a picture thinking that I'd be able to say something about the shadow of a mountain. It didn't turn out that great. But I get out the door before sunup. But sunup is a weird thing when you live in the shadow of a mountain.
If you go up the mountain some and you can look out to the flats you can see the shadow of the mountain. That shadow makes a line. So you can look out there and see where sunrise actually is. I don't know why I thought that interesting. It is like a tiny analogy of being in space and being able to see the solar terminator.
Ack! I ain't gonna put that pic. It ain't that great.7 -
Yes x 3
My NSV was that I kept track of my calories on a pass day even though I knew it would be over, so I must be getting really used to tracking! Lol12 -
yes x's 3 - will comment tomorrow - trying to get back on a normal sleep schedule... hugs and prayers8

15th April
Exercise: Yes. Walked for 50 minutes, had to use 10 minutes of my 'out' time shopping
Calories: Yes, stayed under, in spite of a Twix which I didn't really enjoy and regretted immediately as I could have used those 200 calories so much better on nice, healthy food.
Tracking: Yes, logged everything.
I struggled, it was a day marked more by the things I didn't do than what I actually achieved. I try and keep on top of depression by attempting to do small things and achieve small results, but yesterday was like trying to swim in syrup, like in bad dreams....
Will try and push the re-start button on today.12 -
@oldDogBiking really hits the heights and I truly love his photos and stories. My personal NSV is sorta kinda unusual for a flatlands guy like me. I climbed up here today
11 -
It was about a 600 foot climb.
Tracking: good
Calories: under by good margin9 -
@alligatorob great weight loss, super photo
@RangerRickL another super photo - must have been a great climb
My NSV: This is my sixth month of maintenance. I haven't gained any weight back.
Exercise: walked for an hour and disinfected my workplace for 2.5 hours. The bad news: another employee was diagnosed with coronavirus, a fine person I say hello to in the hall, but rarely have close contact. So far I don't have any symptoms.
Calories: yes
Tracked: yes

This is a weird NSV, especially considering my background. I was literally bed ridden for years because of chronic pain. The last year-and-a-half I gained enough strength to work up to using an exercise bike, weights, and this year the stair treadmill. Now that the gym is closed I've been doing a lot of YouTube workouts but they have to be low impact because of my chronic pain issues/back problems. It's a frustrating one but all the low impact is mainly for beginners so I'm having to add weights and do stuff to make them harder. I don't have heavy weights and did heavy with legs at the gym and I'm struggling to get good leg workouts (arms are wimpy and do ok with extra sets). I NEVER would've thought I'd be in decent enough shape to ever be more than a beginner nevermind someone who works out every day and can complete these things!11 -

My NSV; I am tracking my food intake for 60 days streak. I have joined UAC in the begging of March so I owe UAC mostly to be able tracking continually.9 -

Hi.
I am a former WW. I kept all of the materials and have been incorporating what I originally learned in WW and things I have read and researched over the years. With me, personally, I have found once I have stopped logging in every TLS (taste, lick, sip) the weight starts creeping up.
Before I found MFP I considered joining WW again, but did not like how the program has changed and the closing of all of the physical locations. There is only one meeting being held and it is during the work week very far from work.
Good luck and please let us know how it goes!6
