What's on your mind today?

This is where you can share what's on your mind. Recipes, ideas, workouts, anything that you think might be helpful to others.

Maybe, you've tried something that has worked for you in the past and would like to share it with the group. Maybe, you have a NSV (Non Scale Victory) that you would like to share with the group. Anything that you feel comfortable sharing or anything that you feel comfortable asking the group with help....this is the place to come.

The GOOD!! What NSV did you have this week!!
The BAD!! So what....you ate the whole thing!!
The UGLY!! That darn scale went through the window this week....it deserved it too!!

So, what's on your mind today??

    Hello everyone!!

Like many of you, I am stuck at home. My state is re-opening, and while gyms have the green light to open (with restrictions), I am not ready to go back to a gym.

I have been following Blogilates.com’s monthly calendar since April, where the instructor, Cassey, focuses on Pilates, bodyweight, and cardio exercises with a fun “you can do it!” attitude. What I really love is that her calendar has all the videos you need to complete each day, and they all take less than an hour. Sometimes, if I don’t feel up to all 4 videos, I’ll just do 2, which is still between 20-30 minutes of exercise. 😊

So if you’re looking for a new workout from home, I highly recommend her videos, especially if you don’t own weights.

@craigo3154 Have you tried yoga? There are loads of free videos on YouTube (personally I like Yoga with Adrienne). While initially you will need to concentrate to get used to the moves, once you know them it will take less concentration and if you have a space that you won't be disturbed the flow allows your mind time to do whatever it wants, especially if you find a few videos you like and go through them multiple times so you know the order of the moves. All you need is a small space with a carpet (you don't actually need a yoga mat).

@craigo3154 have you tried the Walk Away the Pounds series? You can find them on YouTube. Fun walks when you are stuck indoors.

@craigo3154 I did some Tai Chi when I was in China and pretty stuck. Qi gong also. Ask some people on this platform, they walk for miles indoors while watching videos of the world. I saw weather in Melbourne, horrendous! However, while today, Tuesday, still looks really bad, the rest of the week seems a lot better, until you're getting another wet and horrible weekend. I empathise entirely. Weather here is lovely now, I can go out and walk and my mood is so much better.

The big-item (furniture & equipment) set-up is complete. I now have a 'work-from-home' station and a 'home-computer & test-study' station set up to my liking. (once i get my language requalification tests out of the way ... the test-study portion will morph into 'crafting-corner' - mostly sewing. )

Now for the systematic decluttering of what's hiding behind closet doors / on bookshelves in there - and gradually expanding outwards to the rest of the house.

Outside work-hours ... when not reviewing for French test (and NOT INSTEAD OF reviewing for French test!!!!)

@Chinkiri, I am seriously impressed. How many languages do you speak and/or write?

@Chinkiri, I am in awe, seriously! I never had the ear for a second language...I tried studying French in University, and although I had the grammar part down, the hearing it and conversing in it was next to impossible for me. Thankfully it was just going to be a minor!

Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes online barre class 50 min.

What does one DO in a barre class? something like ballet fundamentals? not even CLOSE to the idea of ballet fundamentals?

(a link to a typical youtube sample will do)

If one doesn't have a barre in the house already, what works for a substitute? (no matter what the actual exercise moves are)

Check out Coach Kel on YouTube. I normally take Barre classes at a Pilates Studio, but with the Studio being closed for now, I like Coach Kel. I'm sure there are other great videos of other instructors on YouTube, just haven't searched much.

You could get by temporarily using the back of a sturdy chair. I have a wall mounted Barre in my exercise room, and also just made a portable one out of PVC pipe. Not fancy looking, but it works! Of course, Amazon sells portable ones, too.

Let me know what you think of Coach Kel.

Pilates and Barre are my favorite indoor exercises. Yoga also.

Another Monday another 7 days to be focused on my goals, I believe our gym is opening but not sure if I want to rush back immediately. A training session tonight one must attend to know the COVID process for cleaning and probably people allowed in at one time. I have been able to develop my own stuff and now not so sure.... what are those of you who belong to gyms thinking of doing? At this point I think I will go to the informational meeting and since I am really close I can see how many cars are there and make my own time to go. Good luck in all you do this week be safe stay well wash your hands please wear your mask🙂

I will check out Coach Kel. I am 61, spend even MORE time just sitting in front on a computer (now that I am working from home) than I did in an office setting, and have found myself getting stiff. Now that I have switched to recumbent bike for my short (but far more calories burned per miniute) 20 minutes required ... I am looking into other range-of-motion options too.

Is there a pilates YouTube leader you (or anyone) find they like?

Not a regular gym user and never have been - so can't comment on the rest .... but the informational session would at least give you some ideas on how to weigh options .... though wear your mask to it!!

Keep in mind that deeper / heavier breathing (and I am including singing as well as gym work-outs) will put more "potentials" into the atmosphere with more velocity and greater distance, and it only takes one person who doesn't even realize they are "carrying" to spread to many in that situation. So 6 ft / 2 meters isn't NEARLY going to be socially distanced enough. As well as shared equipment.

This weekend, I went through my "mending pile" and sorted what needs a stitch-or-two from things that I might conceivably ATTEMPT to alter to fit my now-on-maintenance body - some of those WERE set aside as too small at one point, but are now TOO BIG ...

    First
    • was ruthless about "colour or style no longer suits who I am now" (straight to the "donate when they are collecting again" pile)
    Next day,
    • actually tried the remainder on - if items were pants / capris and too big for NOW - straight to donate pile (too hard for my sewing skills to alter)
    • set three tops (too big for me, though I still love the colours) aside that my mom might like to adopt (eventually)
    • put multiple other tops in donate pile as "WHY am I going to try to even guess how to alter?!?" WHY NOT START FRESH???" (sewing from altered-before-cutting-fabric relatively basic patterns is closer to my sewing ability - altering pre-made garments (even simply made ones) ain't that easy

Once I put the few stitches in each of the "truly need minor mending" pile, I will do the same sort-down and put a high proportion of them into the "donate when they are collecting again pile". They are good quality with plenty of wear in them - someone not-so-far into their journey will be able to feel very pleased at the finds - I know I did under similar circumstances as my wardrobe sizes evolved.

As I type this I am thinking .... maybe ..... sneak two of those tops destined for mom back out and turn them into sleeveless shells? THAT would be within my alteration skill-level .... at least worth giving further thought to ....

I got rid of every piece of "big" clothing I own. I was afraid if it hung around, I might see I have something to go back to, if I should gain a little. I also have been finding the old styles no longer fit the new me too. It has been nice sprucing up my clothes with new pieces.

@SuziQ113 if I can't EASILY make it fit me now, it isn't staying ... I AM also checking the online catalogue of this collection, to see what they are offering right now and if any of the current colors appeal.

but I got these tops less than 18 months ago, and if they DID fit (if I happened on the same thing but the right size in a quality-label consignment shop for instance), the colours of these scoop-neck "3/4 sleeve T-style" jersey knit tops would suit the current me .... but the prints any particular company uses changes from year to year. They might now be using a completely different "colour pallet" in their current collection.

And over 98% ARE on their way out the door with no second thoughts and no regrets. The other 5 or so keeper items only need tiny tucks in the arm-pit seams or a cuff turned at the end of a too-long sleeve.

@HASWLRS what part of Ontario are you in? "The Golden Horseshoe" will be staying in Level 1 longer, but outside of there Level 2 is supposed to be starting on Friday (hair salons will open; restaurants (patios only and well-spread tables); gatherings of ~10 instead of no-more-than-5 )

I know from last month that you are waiting on the hair salons to re-open with keys in hand and finger poised over the auto-dial ....

After attending the informational gym meeting I feel a bit more comfortable and opening may not be until some time next week which is ok. Several new cleaning products available, self thermo scanning when entering contact data required. Deep cleaning on regular basis no showers and only a couple of bathrooms available that’s ok I live close by. Our gym is not big but it does not alleviate us from risks I do hope that others follow the protocol as it is a unstaffed facility most of the time guess that’s where we need to encourage others to be respectful and I should add we are a older group of gym users average age is probably 45-50 but that doesn’t mean all are respectful. Think I will still observe busy times and then decide when and if I will go.

@BMcC9, I am in Tillsonburg, so outside of the GTA, but close enough when need be. (We can get to Pearson International in 90 minutes with no traffic). My husband actually needs a haircut more than I do, but I am definitely in need of a cut and colour! I must say, now that things are starting to open up, I am a bit anxious, even though the number of virus cases around here has been relatively low. One of the casualties of this opening is my women's only gym. The owner has decided to close, rather than try to work within the new guidelines. Even though I haven't been in over a year, I am still a little sad. Yes, there are co-ed gyms in town, but I will wait on making any sort of decision.

SORRY, if I OFFENDED you. I believe I stated I would have a problem keeping my larger clothes around.

I know it's a great feeling to be able to pack and donate our larger clothing. I made another 2 bag donation to the Salvation Army.

Hopefully the alterations are easy for you so you can still enjoy the collection.

    Take care.

@SuziQ113 - not at all offended!! I am actually quite proud that I am passing on so much of last summer's wardrobe, and that things that were still too small last year are too big this year. I won't be attempting what I know is actually beyond my sewing ability (which means pretty much everything that isn't sooo big that I could use it a yardage to cut a different much smaller item out of) I was just sighing over these favourite colours in these prints. As I moved down sizes, I would always donate too-big "interim" sizes and replace with others from the thrift store, knowing that they would also eventually be "too big before I was done" and donated back again. (I know where to find the resale stores that would get donations from more affluent neighborhoods, and could get high end labels I couldn't otherwise afford)

I am actually in a place that I haven't been for a long time ... looking more in the "new-off-the-rack" catalogues knowing that these will be long-term investments. and deciding what suits current-me long term lifestyle as well as my current new silhouette.
