Sorry for a little tardiness things going on this morning.

We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Aging and Metabolism

Do you have any thoughts? Experience or Knowledge with this Subject? Do you think it may have or be an issue with your LTL journey?
I'm including a blog/link which was on the MFP Site I just noticed this morning. It's 12 Bad Habits That Kill Your Metabolism. Short read or long read take your pick but I think it really relates and speaks to me. Have a great weekend.

I've been putting a thought in this topic for many many months because I was having such a hard time losing weight the older I got. It came to bear however this past fall. After many months of testing and coming up with the health issues that have now been dealt with for now I learned something through these last health challenges. And let me say that while I've had these health challenges I'm feeling better physically and mentally as each day rolls by. I understand that as we age we're gonna have issues but that doesn't mean I have to take sitting down in a recliner and let the world pass me by.

So this topic surfaced many many months ago when I was having all the test and not eating that much and watching everything I was putting in my mouth ans realizing that hey I was still gaining weight most of the time and maybe the health challenges and/or age had something to do with it. As the health challenges were dealt with and as I've begun to finish healing I've noticed that indeed the old ticker not performing correctly had evidently slowed my metabolism rate down and made it much harder to lose even the least bit of weight.

So this article this morning put some validity to the question as we age how does it effect our metabolism. So I'm going to continue the research as time permits and see what else I can to help me lose weight even at an older age.

I agree that our metabolisms especially at rest slow down with age. I am sure it was easier to lose weight at age 62 than it would be now at age 74+. The one thing that might not change quite as much is the calories it takes to do activity. My body weight does affect calorie burn when doing activity for sure.
    It is harder for sure.
I am not so sure about the breakfast thing. Studies have varied all over the ballpark on that one. Everyone eats sometime to break their fast so the term has been used loosey goosey and mostly on the honor system (the old "do you eat breakfast?" without definition scenario)

If one uses a strict definition like eating over say 300-500 calories AND within one hour of arising to mean eating breakfast then the results vary a lot. For me personally eating something in the morning typically about 2 or more hours after arising seems to help me a little bit later in the day. When I eat too early I personally can be more hungry day long.

Time of eating doesn't seem to make as much of a difference as other factors. I get my metabolism going by having a cup of black coffee and going out for a walk or bike ride around dawn. I am eating a bit earlier in the morning after a couple of hours but getting up later and eating even later worked the best. Closer to being a brunch although I also eat an early lunch too. Too many carbs do seem to hinder my weight loss for sure unless I am super active.

If it weren't for covid and avoiding people on the trails I would get up around 6 am go for a walk or ride and maybe eat my morning omelette about 8:30-9a.m. I do like having lunch around 11 am.

I don't do activity to lose weight but for me being inactive hinders my weight losses.

I'm just catching up after a busy week+, but had to comment on this! So much good food for thought in the 12 bad habits, and I'm pretty pleased to have addressed most of them ...

    1. Skipping Bfast - ๐Ÿ˜”I have NOT addressed this one. In an attempt to only eat in an 8 hour window, Bfast often goes ๐Ÿคท
    2. Eating the wrong Bfast - โœ”๏ธ I always eat protein.
    3. Sitting too much - โœ”๏ธMoving at least 250 steps per hour, 7 of the 10 between 9a and 7p is on my list of strategies for the lose #10 challenge and I've been mostly successful.
    4. Neglecting strength training - โœ”๏ธ Also a #10 chal strategy
    5. Not eating enough protein โœ”๏ธ WW helped me establish that habit. I've replaced the pasta, bread, etc with protein.
    6. Not drinking enough water - โœ”๏ธ I drink tons!
    7. Stressing out - ๐Ÿ˜” That's a problem WW addressed recently and I'm working to manage. Have decided to talk to my Dr about this topic at my annual check up next week.
    8. Eating refined carbs -โœ”๏ธ Again I have WW to thank!
    9. Swearing off dairy - ๐Ÿ˜” Definitely don't eat/drink enough. Mostly I just eat gk ff yogurt, and not that often. Kinda goes in streaks. I have recently found some really interesting uses for cottage cheese (who knew it melted down to cheesy and creamy ๐Ÿคท, so maybe that will help.
    10. Sleeping in a warm room- โœ”๏ธNot if we can help it, but definitely not down to 66' (I can imagine the electric bill). We did just replace our pillow topped mattress with the purple mattress and it's amazing! So much cooler!
    11. Not enough sleep - ๐Ÿ˜”I try, but mornings do not always cooperate. Maybe it's time to get back to a set bed time
    12. Eating fast food โœ”๏ธ This ones easy. I'm more than not a๐Ÿ˜. If I take the littles, I rarely order more than a diet pop! Honestly can't remember the last time I ate it, but I bet it's more than a year ago.

This was a great exercise! Gave me areas where I can pay myself on the back, and areas to work on. I think I'll start with sleep!
