Hello. :) I am about a week and a half into the paleo diet and loving it! One of the reasons I really like this way of eating is that I'm not suppose to be counting calories, and that has been a major OBSESSIVE issue for me previously. So, while I'm still getting used to not counting anything, I have been slowly beginning to enjoy the freedom of not counting numbers and just enjoying my food. With that said, I really want to stay around 60-75 g of carbs a day, but I don't necessarily want to have to keep track of my carb count. My question is if I am eating meat and vegetables, will my carbs add up super quick if I'm not counting? I'm staying away from potatoes and fruits. I've lost weight since starting, I just wanted to ask. Thanks! :)

If you are absolutely NOT eating fruit or potatoes, including sweet potatoes, or added sugar of any kind, you might not need to track.

But I log my food everyday. I can put away a bus load of carbs just working at my desk mindlessly eating carrots.

If you are avoiding potatoes and fruits you do not need to track (assuming that you aren't eating HUGE volumes of food). With just eating non starchy veggies, and even a fruit or two, you will probably not go much over 60g. That is also assuming that you aren't a frequent/constant snacker-most Paleo people are not.

I have my carbs lower for my own health issues so I do need to track my carb intake.

maybe track a few days here and there to see how your carb intake is going? I haven't been tracking much at all, have just started recently as I figured I should see what I'm actually putting into my body! I have been trying to keep meat pretty minimal just so I don't overdo the protein (harder on the kidneys) but I'm actually way under on it.

It would help to track for a few days and see how your carb intake is progressing. However, be careful with vegetables that contain a lot of sugar, such as corn and peas. One cup of corn has over 120 grams of carbs, so not all veggies are beneficial for the primal way of eating. (too bad... I love corn on the cob!)

oops, I had found the statement about corn having 120+ g carbs in 1 cup from one site, but I was mistaken. it's around 30 g according to other sites. however, the point is to eat non-starchy veggies :)

Everyone else pretty has it covered for you. If you're like me and you tend to stay away from the starchy veggies, and you don't eat a lot of fruit, you should be fine. I track simply because it puts my mind at ease, my pre-logging holds me accountable so that I am less inclined to cheat, and I like to stay under 50g of carbs, so I do it simply for those reasons. If you're not into the logging and you're losing weight then you're doing all the right things.

I also love bananas (like I would eat them 4 times a day if I could) but they are very high in carbs so I track to make sure that if I don enjoy a banana in one of my meal shakes that I make the rest of my day follow suit so that I can stay under 50g.
