We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Living The Lifestyle and Medical Issues.
Lose? Gain? Stay the Same?
You don't need to disclose what medical issue(s) you've experienced while LTL and it could be something as minor as a cold.
As you experienced the medical issue(s) what adjustments did you make? The obvious here is to follow Dr's orders but beyond that?

Well I chose this topic since I've been through 3 major medical issues since January. I haven't beaten myself up as far as the weight loss goes since I've dropped 30 lbs since January but it's disgusting to know that I put the lbs back on. I was already obese at 300 and stalled out for 2-4 years. There really is no finish line literally.

These recent issues however have been by far the most serious health issues. Their corrected at this point and I just hsve to stick with the program and move forward one meal or snack at a time. Onward and downward.
    👍🙂

In 2012 I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. I had been at goal weight about
5 1/2 Yrs. For a brief moment I had the thought “all the trouble to maintain a healthy weight and this is the payoff I get. Maybe I should just say the heck with the whole program.” Like I said, a brief moment.

No one ever suggested to me that gaining 50 lbs would help my treatment. I thought the best thing would probably be to keep my routines in place. And that’s mostly what I did.

The first level of treatment for my CA was something called BCG. Administering the treatments is very unpleasant. But I tolerated them well and other than missing a few sessions at the gym, things mostly stayed on track. I might have allowed for an extra treat on treatment day but I never paid for that at WI. I was attending weekly WW meetings. That helped.

My weight was never discussed during any of this. I think my Drs just figured I was naturally thin.

In 2015, I was doing great OP and w/in #8 of goal. I felt great! And then I got hives. They moved around to various locations, always in at least 3 at a time, and got very intense! Drove me to near insanity at times so finally saw a Dr. After a couple months if useless treatment, they put me on steroids, double doses of 24, 12 and 6 (4?) hr antihistamines. This slowly worked, but made my mind super cloudy. It was a good 6 months later that my DD said it was nice to have me back, that I could finally finish a thought, follow other's thoughts, and carry on a conversation. During that time, there was no thought about food, really very little thinking going on at all, and my weight soared! I never did get ahold of it for any length of time until this summer 🤞. Colds and coughs can trip me up, but don't compare to the total derailment that happened with hives.

This summer, I put a more balanced program in place in hopes it can withstand life's hiccups. Time will tell!

I joined WW in 2011. I wanted to lose about 45 pounds. I thought would take a year - - because, you know, lose slowly at less than a pound a week. (Silly me!) It took me 2.5 years to lose 29 pounds to get to goal. The last three pounds just didn't want to come off. A lot of learning took place in that time. Funny thing that once I hit the WW goal (160), I pretty easily lost another eight and at one point 15.) I was comfortably bopping around between 152-157 and very happy with the way I'd learned to eat and the amount of effort I needed to make to maintain. But then I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. I took my eye off the ball during treatment. I gained back 15. There were steroids, fatigue, worry, sleep issues and a steady diet of take-out. But the main thing I notice when I look back at that time, is that there's a glaring hole in my weekly weigh-ins. I basically stopped weighing for a year. (Granted I was getting weighed weekly at the doc's, but that's not the same for trying to maintain consistent weigh-in conditions.) I had a fleeting moment back at goal in 2018, but I did it too quickly. (Part of a low carb medical study.) So basically, I'm still trying to re-lose my cancer wright and then some. (At least I think that's likely true.)

A friend had her first chemo treatment for BC yesterday. One of the things I texted to her this morning is to try to be aware of what she's consuming during treatment and that it's a great time to focus on eating healthy. I suggested keeping a food journal because people will drop off meals and desserts - - lots of desserts.
