the dreaded TDEE

Hi im relatively new to this TDEE thing and just cant seam to work my way through the mixed messages you get on MFP.

I have hard that if you eat your TDEE then you will still lose weight, is this correct?

A little about me:
Im 37 years old, work in a office, I weigh 174lbs (currently lost 23lbs) since November 2012. I go to Body pump twice a week. I currently eat 1200 give or take a day.

what should I be doing?

Apologies for the dumbness - Angie

I'm trying to eat at a 20% defecit of my TDEE to drop some fat. If you figure your TDEE correctly you're more or less eating at maintenance as I understand it. If you want to drop weight, you have to eat less than your TDEE.

I think SIdeSteel and Sarah would want to look at your diary to see what your macros are set at before making a suggestion. In general you should be eating around 1700 calories which would put you at a 20% defecit.

The calories you eat are important just as the type of calories you eat are. When losing weight, you want to try to retain as much lean muscle as possible. In order to do this you need to eat quite a bit of protein. The rule of thumb is 1 gram of protein for 1lb of lean muscle. So by example, protein is consuming x amount of calories.

I beleive this is in the topics to read section but you want to set your macros for protein/carbs/fat. So x % of your caloires come from protein, x % from carbs, etc.

I would recommend you go to this post that SS and Sara put together. It should answer all your questions.

There's lots of great sticky topics in this group. I'd recommend you give those a read and then come back and ask for clarification on anything you don't understand. It can be confusing at first but eventually it starts to make sense.

Your TDEE is your maintenance calories - i.e. what you would eat to stay the same weight.
