We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Monday - 88olds (George)
Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Wednesday - misterhub (Greg)
Thursday - linmueller (Lin)
Friday - imastar2 (Derrick)

Today's Topic: Intermittent fasting.

I know opinions range on this topic from magical thinking to important technique for weight loss to good for your overall health. What do you think about it?

Bonus questions:. What is your plan for Thanksgiving re. you weight loss plan? Track? On plan? Indulgences? Splurge? Details welcome. I'll be following up next week in the LTL to hear how you did.

I realize those are very unrelated questions, but I feel like I need to be accountable for my tx plans, and I really want to hear what you think of IM, so 🤷

Intermittent fasting: I've read just enough to be intrigued by IF. I like the idea of killing off the free radicals that may?/do? factor into cancer, alzheimer's, etc.

I don't think it's a magical formula for weight loss, but I have seen one really big win come out of dabbling in in. I stop and think before eating anything at night after dinner (or my planned popcorn) regardless of the number of hours I've been eating, and almost always resist eating, like 98% of the time! So, in that sense, it's been a great WL tool for me.

    Bonus questions:
I plan to be OP. DS is making turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm bringing a healthy veg to roast, corn, and homemade applesauce, plus a healthyish dessert, even tho I really want to make Emmie's pie. I plan to eat 0 SP before and after. The only SP will be in the butter he'll insist on putting in the potatoes 🤣, but it won't be a ton, and in the gravy, which I will be having. And dessert. Still not sure about this. May bring SF jello that the littles love with whipped topping. The guys don't really care that much about dessert and my SIL is working, so ...

I think the key aspect of IF is the focus, mindfulness, and "strict rule" that it forces. If you pay attention and stick to a set of proper rules, you will generally lose weight. For many folks, "intermittent fasting" means no nighttime snacking (which is what derails many of us).
Personally, I think all the rest of the claims are bunk (or at least, magical thinking with no data supporting it).

Bonus: I will eat my fill for Thanksgiving, with very little concern for calories. Before and after, however, I will stick to my plan as usual.

I personally have no experience with intermittent fast but know of a handful of friends who have had short term success with it and some were for religious beliefs.

My personal research led me first to my nutritionist whom I'll be seeing via zoom in tge morning. Because partly my personality and secondly my schedule on occassions I tend to miss meals. She was pretty much insistent that I not miss any meals. We didn't go into a great detail about the reasons or implications but I know she has her reasons and why. While I continue to strive to lose weight fasting is not in my immediate thoughts or plans.

I'm planning to indulge for the one meal of the day. Since we're going to a State Lodge in the North Ga mountains we're having lunch there. Because of covid I'm somewhat nervous over it but they are only offering lunch for those who have a hotel room.

It's been a tradition for many years with DW's elderly cousin who has no family so it's just the 3 of us. Doesn't mean I'm not nervous over it

Thanks for weighing in guys. I admit I was esp hoping you'd give your take on the science behind the claims of IF. Kinda disappointed there isn't any . I guess I'll just enjoy the effect it's had on p.m. snacking and call that a win anyway.

When I'm in my zone, I normally eat in a natural eight to nine hour window. My family were early dinner eaters, so I grew up naturally eating this way once I became a breakfast skipper. DH and I tend to eat dinner late, but again, when n my zone, I like to have dinner earlier. All of this assumes I'm not exercising strenuously. When exercising regularly, I go back to needing breakfast.

For Thanksgiving, my plan is to eat a little lighter the few days leading up to it and to track every day. I'll be making a big pot of zero point soup today, which I really love. I'm definitely going to enjoy Thanksgiving day, though. There will be gravy.

Never even considered it. I can’t even close the kitchen at night. Have to have something there just in case. If I’m counting and run out of whatever I’m counting, points or calories, I start pacing the floor. Not good. I’d be a wreck during IF downtimes.
