We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Monday - crewahl (Charlie)
Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Wednesday -
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - imastar2 (Derrick)

Today's Topic: New Day, New Year, New Beginning or is it? We hear a lot of pros and cons on New year resolutions? We can't do one thing to change the past but we can learn from our past and do our best not to repeat anything we deem destructive or harmful.
Do you have any thoughts you'd care to share for the good of the cause?

At 73 years old I can assure anyone I've been through my share of New Years resolutions. Some crashed by noon on the first day some survived longer but for the life of me I have a hard time this morning remembering if I made a full year on any type of resolution on a daily basis. Oh sure I've had successes with weight losses along with other accomishments but to stick to day in and day out? I don't think so.
It might be more of an accumulation of wish lists than resolutions.

Anyway I'll put together a 2021 list once again of items I want to accomplish because without a plan I'm liable to wind up anywhere. So yes I'll call them goals or items to be accomplished with one thought in mind. A dream or goal not written down and envisioned only becomes a wish if no action has been applied.

So I really don't want 2021 to become another year of wishes thus my one word for this year at this point is ACTION.
Thats my thought for this morning.🤔😁

Me too. No more "New Year's Resolutions" I found they don't work. Gotta dig in every day (almost ;) .

I agree. I don't make idle promises but am pretty good at keepin' on keepin' on. Persistence not perfection.

I don't make NYs resolutions in the typical way. I reflect on the past year to see what worked and what didn't. Then I plan to continue what worked, modify what didn't or jettison it. This works pretty well for me. Striving for perfection is a fool's game.

A new year can serve as an opportunity for reflection and introspection about what worked and what didn't. That’s obviously of no use without some course corrections if warranted. The question is how to manage that.

The problem I have with resolutions is that they seem very binary - hit it and you’re a success; miss it (by a day or an inch or a pound or a dollar) and you’re a failure. Certainly over time in project management I’ve seen plenty of bad decisions driven by the absolutist approach to hitting goals.

Because of that, I lean towards “intentions” for the year. It’s a plan to move in a particular direction, but it Cana also be changed if circumstances change or priorities legitimately change. At the end of the day, the true test is “am I happy with the decisions I made along the way toward this intention.” It’s really more about the journey than the goal.

For me, it’s like vacations. Some of my favorite vacations were based on “let’s head south” rather than something like “let’s go to Myrtle Beach.” It’s about the journey, and you make decisions along the way about where to stop, what to see, etc. it’s that type of journey-based travel that let me see Luray Caverns and Casey IL, which I wouldn’t have stopped for if I had a destination and a date in mind.
