OT: that 2nd dose--yowza

I had my second Moderna vaccine dose on Tuesday. It really packs a punch. I couldn't sleep that night (not all that unusual), and when I officially woke in the morning, I had the worst headache I'd had in a long time, and an incredible level of fatigue (my body literally felt heavy to move), and some muscle and joint aches. I slept on-and-off all day (thankfully I had pre-planned a work-from-home day), and still had my headache by the time I went back to sleep for the night.
This morning, however, I felt completely better. The difference was amazing.
On a related note, I purposefully did not take motrin or tylanol, etc. There is a theoretical concern that anti-inflammatory meds might blunt the response to the/any vaccine. Given the current risk of having a less-than-perfect response to the vaccine, I decided that a headache and fatigue was better than being susceptible to COVID. YMMV.

I didn't know that about anti-inflammatory meds! Thanks for mentioning that.1

I am jealous, I don't get my first shot till tomorrow and the 2nd has not been scheduled yet1

Also thanks for the anti inflamatory tip1

Thanks Steve. TOL and I get ours Tuesday.1

Thanks for the heads up on the 2nd shot, I think. I had my 1st shot yesterday with minor soreness in the arm, like with any shot. I am scheduled for my 2nd shot on 2/25. Now I have something to look forward to.1

Sorry about the whammy, Steve.
Like Dennis, I had my first (Pfizer) yesterday. I had heard about the anti-inflamnatories, but it didn’t stop me from mindless taking Motrin as part of my morning pills. Hard to control what happens in the first sixty seconds I’m awake, but I’ll try to remember to create a visual cue in advance of the second shot.
Which is scheduled for 3/27, just over eight weeks out. The state has promised it will reach out to “second risers” and get us moved up into the proper timeframe. They’ve done a good job so far, and done what they said they’d do.
Happy to be started. Like you, Steve, I’m assuming the by-products of the vaccination are a lot less than the disease.1 -
I'll be in Group 2, so I'm not holding my breath on when I'll get the first dose. But I'm thankful that all of our living parents have had round 1 and will pass on the info about round 2.
I'd read about not taking anti-inflammatory meds with vaccines but chickened out and took them with my recent first dose of Shingrix based on a friend's reaction. I'll probably tough it out for round 2.1 -
Got #1. 2 is scheduled for 2/12. They gave me the date but not a time. Last time I waited in a line of cars for about 3hrs for my scheduled appointment. Have serious misgivings about how this will go with no scheduled time.
I think they start about 8am. Going to aim to get there @ 7.1 -
Thanks @steveOmania. I had my first Moderna shot this past Tuesday. I had not heard about taking any inflammatory meds and already had a headache prior to taking the shot. I noticed after the shot my headache got worse so I took Acetaminophen (Tylenol) but don't think it helped much. I'll have to research this. My 2nd shot is due 2/23/21 but I'll be sure to ask about this. There really is not much they know about side effects at this point as far as I can tell. Better safe than sorry I reckon.0

You guys didn't need to tell us this. The trackers installed by Bill Gates already had the news out.0

Got my first phizer shot yesterday, second is set for 2/20. It was busy but well controlled and scheduled only took about 15 - 20 minutes, I was impressed by how well it was done. Only side effect so far is a little shoulder soreness, thank goodness for that.1

Thanks for the heads up. I did take a mild dose of ibuprofen about 7 hours after the first shot which I would have avoided knowing this. From research studies on the vaccines it seems that taking something after the fact and not before the shot may not affect the effectiveness so much. Anyway it was a small dose. I did have more tendency for a night sweat the second night and should have turned off the electric blanket at bedtime.0

For those of us who will be getting vaccinated farther down the line, a friend was in the J&J vaccine trial and received the real vaccine versus placebo. As part of the study, he was not allowed to take any anti-inflammatories. (Received two shots.) He was convinced he got the placebo because he had zero side effects other than the usual sore arm.

I'm 72, so got in on the first round of the vaccine. I used to pop anti-inflammatories like candy, but after reading articles on the downsides, now take them infrequently.0

The reality is that there are *no* significant research studies on taking anti-inflammatories afterwards, and certainly no studies related to RNA-based vaccines, COVID vaccines, etc.
Again, the concerns are theoretical, but it's at least worth making an informed decision.
