Fitness February!

I'll get it started for February. I have been doing yoga the past 3 nights in a row, so I thought hey let's make it Fitness February and it will be a reminder to me to keep it up!

I have been and will continue to be a bit hit or miss on checking in. With the work on the house and being swamped at the office everything feels a bit chaotic right now. The yoga helps keep me centered a bit though. I'm hoping maybe all the major renovations will be done by spring and I can actually enjoy my home again.

Mihani - I like the title. Good for you for yoga. I should be doing that.

We went for a 4 mile walk in King Williams district to downtown San Antonio. Stopped 1/2 way for brunch. Had my favorite. Avocado toast and Chai latte made with oatmeal milk.

Afterwards a stop to Trader Joe’s. OMG what am I going to do without Trader Joe’s???? Little panics here and there. Such as am I too old for another move??? And might be one after that.

Water sautéed spinach & Kale with chopped garlic and seasonings plus sautéed mushrooms. Dessert fresh watermelon.

    Ciao!

Bisky, the Japan adventure sounds so wonderful, but I can understand the panics. Will you be selling your house or will you end up back there? I seem to remember you had done a fair amount of work to it since moving there.

I got some sort of weird bug that made me very sick to my stomach Sunday and Monday. So bad that I actually stayed home from the office Monday. I haven't felt like eating my salads with my stomach still tender but last night I decided to throw a bunch of the salad greens (this week is baby spring mix and arugula) and the chopped veggies into a stockpot with veggie broth and spices. Brought to a boil and simmered for about 20 minutes. It was delicious! I have enough for a couple more days and the salads aren't going to waste.

Hi all, I signed up for this... The Truth About Weight Loss A lot of the usual big names like McDougall, Fuhrman, Greger, Lisle, Chef AJ, plus a whole bunch more. It is a free live event over 9 days, but if you want to have lifetime access to all the content it's like $70 which I thought worth the cost. I would miss a lot if I was only able to watch it live.

    Mihani - I
I hope you are feeling better by now.

We are going to rent out house out. We did replace every single window. Replaced all kitchen appliances, floors and new reverse osomisis filter soft water treatment. New hot water tank next week. We did not paint because it was just painted when we bought the house. We also took out 70 feet of lawn and put in a rock garden. This time year we love San Antonio and might retire here.

    Vegetarian pizza and salad tonight.

Popping in to say hello...hope everyone is staying healthy?

    Back in March sometime.

Organizer comes end of month...and I am making great progress getting ready for her. Joined a declutter Facebook group, which is extremely motivating.

    BE RUTHLESS is my motto.

    Later sweet peas!

Hey Magic... I had been wondering about you. Glad you are doing well and yay for progress on your organizing.

Bisky, I forgot about the rock garden. That's such a nice idea! I like a nice lawn but I don't like keeping it up.

Austin, how's everything in your world?

The kitchen demo has begun. It's a mess. I am sitting here eating a handful of lettuce, some chopped veggies, more lettuce, more veggies. Just didn't feel like making a "salad" out of it and having dishes I'd have to wash in the bathroom sink. If I want something different later in the week I do have some frozen entrees.

Hi All, still super busy with work AND my kitchen has been demolished and partially reconstructed, but going to be 3 to 4 weeks waiting for appliances and counters. So no cooking for me. I still have my salad prepping friend making stuff for me and I stocked up some frozen entrees that are "mostly" WFPB. Almost all of them have some oil but I looked for the lowest in fat. I also have some soups and cooked veggies that I froze over the past couple months getting ready for this. Rounding off with simple no prep fruits like oranges, apples, bananas, and Dr. McDougall soups.

The kitchen is going to be beautiful though, and I am looking forward to getting back into cooking when it is done!

    Hello everyone

Howdy! Nice to meet you! Tell us a little about yourself, and what you are doing in terms of plant-based eating?

I am mostly eating as per Dr Joel Fuhrman's Eat to Live, though I am having a few days run here where I can;t do that as well as usual. I am managing vegan, for the most part (had a bit of chocolate) and will be back on track next week if the dust settles.

More general check-in... I am SO sorry to have been quiet. I had ambitions of being a goof plant-based partner this week, and well, I live in Texas, and have been offline due to the lack of electrical power and internet. I am super happy to check in with you! Rambly update follows. Feel free to skip!
We had power turned off on Sunday and just got it back. So I have been hunkered down doing things like battling to keep my water pipes from freezing in an unheated house when the outdoor temp was about 9F. I unfroze a cold water tap in our kitchen one night between 3 and 7 AM, and it felt (still feels!) like a major life victory! (Way better to do that than deal with burst pipes and having to turn off all water to the house and wait for a plumber.) Good news is that we have electrical power again, at least for now. I am prepared for it to go again. I don't think we can count on it staying up just yet.

So. Diet has NOT been as regularly planned, nor has exercise. I am sure my weight is up, as I have been comfort snacking on nut-and-fruit mix. Lots of it. I have not been drinking the usual amount of water and need to do better. We have to boil it right now, but I can do better, and I do need t take care of my body in the midst of this madness! Ah, well. This will be a blip. I am headed to the grocery store shortly, to see what the food options are. I am a merit badge counselor for Boy scouts, and was just telling a scout who plans to work on "Cooking at Home" this weekend, that he will have to be prepared to adjust his menu plan based on what he can actually find in the store, once he is able to go! (I just came back from the store: almost nothing refrigerated (a little bit of milk), nothing frozen, no fresh fruits and vegetables to speak of (just a few oddments; I was able to get a bag of apples).

None of this is intended as whining, by the way. I am doing fine. It's more like, sharing stuff that seems super interesting. I AM super interested in how fragile the grid is here in Texas. I hear that the issues here have caused problems as far south as central Mexico, as we are a major supplier of natural gas. I hear other places are dealing with the winter weather, too, but without dealing with the domino of all systems going down as is happening here. We aren't out of the woods yet, and will be dealing with water issues for likely a couple of weeks. We are also still waiting to see if natural gas stays up or if it goes down, which will mean all kinds of problems.
TL;DR Austin is fine, but was offline due to infrastructure failures in her usually nice neighborhood.
I need to work on revised food and exercise plans for the next 2 weeks, given that my usual stuff won't be doable.

Speaking of Texas -- @bisky how are you doing? I don't think you have headed for Japan yet, and I think you have have been dealing with weather-related issues as well!

    @magic71755
How are you guys in Arizona dealing with the weather? Doing okay?
I hope all your organizing is going well. What FB group are you finding so useful for that?

    @Mihani
I am blanking on where you are - NC? I am thinking you deal with winter weather on a regular basis and so are likely not quite so flummoxed as some of my fellow Texans.
Anyway, I hope the kitchen remodel isa rocking and rolling!
I now have plans to work on the kitchen this year. Gonna be interesting!

Hi Austin..Hope things get better in Texas..About me..I'm 55, live in Northern Illinois, married for 31 years,( no children Not able to have), I caretake my mom(she's 81 and is able to live independently with help) I'm also an only child so it's just me m-f and then my husband helps me with her sat/sun..
I'm 5'5" and weigh 115..not bad scalewise but I had been 105 before I started caretaking my mom 2 years ago..She had fallen and broke a veribre in her back and has needed help since
Neuropathy, balance issues, needs a walker at all times and a transport chair for doctors appointments
( To much for her to go from a parking lot into a professional building). I love the community on this forum (I read all the older threads/posts) which is why I joined. I love the wfpb and for me I want to be 80% plant based and 20% things that wouldn't be Furman approved., make some new friends😊
and get tips menu ideas from those who are living the plant based lifestyle. I also want to start exercising again. My workouts have been too random lately( 5 days, then no days , then 2 days )
I have a fur baby named Mason 🐶 He is 1 1/2 years old 20lbs French bulldog. Our little guy had a stage 4 luxating patella that required surgery. Sad part he had gone through all of it before to be a 5% didn't work and Is going through all of this again. Cone for 2 weeks and 21 staples in his left leg/ knee. We have pet insurance and he came with a warranty. So this has all been covered under a claim with his warranty. Thank goodness because by the time round 2 is over that would have been about 10,000 out of pocket ( without having insurance). Hope to hear more from everyone. Have a great Saturday.😊

Austin!!!! I am so glad you are doing okay through the nightmare in Texas. I had thought of you when I heard that, and Bisky as well. I hope she is okay too. Hopefully we will hear soon. I didn't take your post as whiny at all! (And I read the whole thing) I am glad you shared how you are getting through this and trying to stay "mostly" WFPB and ETL while struggling with so much. You're my ETL hero.

Hawksgirl welcome! I so hope Mason will be okay. It's difficult when pets or children are ill because it's so unfair and you can't explain why they are going through the treatments and pain. Breaks your heart. I bet your mom is very grateful that you have the time and energy to spend with her and take care of her.

I'm doing the best I can with the kitchen remodel. Might be another 2 weeks before I get countertops and everything is normal. I am having an Evolve ready to drink in the morning, Dr. McDougall soup and fruit for lunch, and a frozen entree with some fresh raw veggies for dinner. I could do better I guess, but I am muddling through best way I can with work so crazy busy and not being able to cook anything other than microwave.

The kitchen will be beautiful when it is done and I can't wait to start cooking again. Sorry I haven't been around much lately but between work and the remodel my life is a bit chaotic.

Oh, I have to mention... I am on a couple ETL facebook groups and there are people who are SO MILITANT that I have considered blocking them so I don't see their posts. Thing is... we have to be welcoming to people who are trying their best and not put them off by insisting on perfection. I get so irritated by that. Case in point, a person posted that they like to drink alcohol on weekends and they might have a few foods that aren't perfect, and one of the militant members said if you do that vegetables won't taste good. I almost commented on that, but restrained myself... but seriously??? I have been vegetarian for a really long time and vegan for almost 10 years... veggies ALWAYS taste good, and they even tasted good before I was vegetarian! LOL

Mihani steps off her soapbox. <3

    Mihani HI!!!!
Hope you will be able to post a picture of your new kitchen..How exciting!!! I think your menu sounds great..I'll have to try those shakes. For plant based I find I just feel better with little to no meat in.my diet.. I am working on more water (easy once I'm in the groove but can quickly break that habit..Something I'm working on.).I love diet coke, coffee and Splenda but am trying to make those an occasional thing..the struggle is real😔 Also what is furhmans 10 in 20? Google gives me the run around..Have a great day😊

Hawksgirl, the 10 in 20 is Dr. Fuhrman's 20 day menu plan that should let you lose 10 pounds in 20 days, although since you are already at a low weight I doubt it would be 10 pounds that fast for you. I bought it some years ago but it was more cooking than I generally like to do. I am all about batch prepping on weekends and don't cook often during the week. I've fallen off the batch prepping lately but hoping my enthusiasm for cooking returns when the kitchen is done.

Hello Nutritarian has a batch prep cooking plan that offers 6 weeks of menu plans that you prepare over two days then use for the meal plans all week. I haven't done any of the full preps yet but have used quite a few of the recipes and they are really good. Without buying the full prep plan you can read a basic food prep guide on her website: https://hellonutritarian.com/eat-to-live-food-prep-guide/ Great tips here and a lot of free recipes on her website.

I was exhausted yesterday and decided to take a nap at 5:00... slept clear through the night and up at 3:00 am. Have laundry going and then will get to some work in my home office. I was debating on going to the office but it's so cold I just don't feel like going anywhere.

Oh, Austin, I forgot you asked where I am and it's Ohio. It was a really mild winter up until last week when we got all kinds of fun icy rain and snow, bitter cold. Fortunately I didn't lose power which happens often when there is a lot of ice so I was extremely grateful for that.

Welcome Hawksgirl! I hope Mason recovers quickly. It is hard to see our fur babies in pain. I have 3 terrorists: a YORKIE, Westie and min. Schnauzer.

Austin- I am not Canadian but grew up in Canada and lived in Colorado. I thought the snow was beautiful and exciting but so sad to all the people who died and suffered. We are very close to a police station and the airport so our power was never cut. Taking a bunch of stuff to a drop off for people who lost everything in an apartment fire. So sad. Stay warm.

Mihani your kitchen renovations are amazing. I miss our gas stove. I agree with people being so militant about ETL. My sister who is vegan and works at a vegan restaurant is quite militant. I say I try to eat a 90% vegetarian diet but also occasionally have eggs and fish. Even Dr Fuman in his latest book said some fish are ok. He is dead set against eggs. I tell people my way of eating is preferred but not a religion.

We leave first of June for Japan. Very excited. Going through a lot of stuff. With each move we pair down but this is probably our last big move. Just found out there are bears on base and north side of island!

Oh I forgot to mention the Instant pot. I really was not happy when Brooks bought it. I personally have not bothered to learn how to use it but omg I love It. I find the recipes and help prep... Brooks sets it up. It makes the best beans. We have been making retried beans and nothing like canned refried beans. We added roasted poblano peppers. So good! We also made vegetable soup that was delicious!

I Picked up the chocolate Evolve shakes today. I'm having one for breakfast tomorrow. I like trying new things. Thanks for the info on the 10 in 20. Not interested in having to cook things..I'm more of a microwave, soup and salad girl..I find the simpler I keep things the easier it is for me to stick with..It's just me for meals m-f and then my husband and I on the weekends. Thanks for the website and I'm also going to checkout YouTube.
Breakfast was a caramel protein shake
Lunch was a very large salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, diced red onions, carrots, mushrooms, a box of mini raisins, chopped pecans, black pepper and balsamic vinegar. A large ice water.
Dinner will be a bowl of fresh fruit with some coconut flakes on top and another large ice water
I did a 1/2 hour on my treadmill and a 1/2 hour upper body workout.
Hello bisky I love the picture of your fur babies. I have always had a dog but thought I was done when our last one past away..He was 14 and a cocker spaniel. He was in kidney failure for his last year and a half. I take it very hard when it's time for them to leave and join my other ones. But after time I realized I missed having a little one around. They bring so much joy..Enter Mason🐶.
Wow to Japan..That's definitely a lifetime opportunity..looking forward to hearing about it and wish you all the best on your adventure!!! On the instant pot,I know it has quite a following but I admit it kinda intimates me so I have never purchased one..I do like my slow cooker..Also, so kind of you to help others in need.. If there were more people like you, our world would be a much better place!!😊
Also. Thanks everyone for Mason's well wishes..He is quite the little trooper and seems to just roll with whatever comes his way..

The pups look like they are having a great time in the snow, Bisky! I am not a big fan of bears... I love them in theory but up close and personal they are scary. I have only used my instapot once since receiving it as a gift a couple years ago. I do plan to become more acquainted with it once the kitchen is done.

hawksgirl your salad sounds delicious. I love a touch of sweet in a salad sometimes... grapes, diced apple or pear, clementines, etc. Great job on the menu plan and the workout.

I haven't been eating actual salads the past couple weeks having no real kitchen. I am just eating lots of chopped fresh veggies and not bothering with the lettuce and dressing. I am already sick of frozen entrees but I do have some soups I froze and I will have a bowl of lentil soup tonight along with the raw veggies.

    Howdy, all!

I am still noshing too much on comfort food, but staying plant-based except for a couple of Girl Scout cookies. NOT part of my usual diet. Getting back to normal after I head to the grocery store late today and build a new food plan around what I can get. I did make an awesome vegan chili -- or bean stew, as my son calls it; he's big on chili needing to contain meat, but also liked the stew!

I am also working to be very hydrated today, now that water is back.

@hawksgirl229 , the 10-in-20 plan was very effective for me, and I am about to do it again.

@bisky - I got up close to a wild bear once as a kid. Fortunately it was shy, and ran away from our very excited dogs. Hilarious note -- I still remember how smelly he was!

@Mihani - I keep hearing raves about instant pots. Could it be a help while you are kitchen-less? It sounds like a gadget I would have loved back in my efficiency apartment days.
Also - I love your soapbox about not being militant. Everyone's on a journey. Bashing is no help to anyone at all. I love our laidback and supportive conversation!

@magic71755 - If you check ion, stop and say hello, and tell us how your organizing is going!

Putting raisins in a salad is something I had never thought of before but I really liked it and will be something I will continue to do. I think your lentil soup sounded tasty. I do think a great bowl of soup with a piece of crusty bread is such a satisfying meal..
    @AustinRuadhain
Thanks for responding on the 10 in 20 plan..I've been watching some Furhman videos on YouTube.just to get some menu/ recipe ideas..I do best with simple menus without a whole lot of prep..I've never have tried a green smoothie. They look interesting but wonder if my ninja would grind the greens enough. I wouldn't want chunks of greens in my drink. Some recipes suggest using frozen greens but I'm not sure if that would help.

That's what made me want to be an active part of this group..Everyone is supportive and very kind..I also love that this is a journey and we do the best that we all can..Somedays it's gonna be perfect while others days maybe an epic fail..But we all pick ourselves up and do better next time.
    Menu today
Chocolate Evole shake (really enjoyed) with 1/2 of a banana. Large ice water.
After my mom's while doing errands
    Another large ice water.
    Lunch
Brown rice with steamed greens and some sautéed mushrooms/ diced onions. Large glass of
    Ice water.
    Dinner
Bowl of berries. Blueberries and strawberries
    Workout
1/2 hour of yoga (dvd) and a 1/2 hour walk on the treadmill. I'm trying to get more water and really limit diet coke and coffee..As much as I love both I truly feel better with alot less..I'm down to 1 cup coffee and 1 diet coke..Eventually I'd like it to be one or the other..
    Happy Tuesday plant friends 🍄

hawksgirl, love seeing you get fruit in most meals. I am bad about that. I usually eat a piece of fruit at lunch but often forget other meals. Sure helps keep you satisfied and when you aren't eating other sweets fruit is so wonderfully sweet. I will say that sweets were never a temptation for me. I will eat a cookie now and then or a piece of dark chocolate. My downfalls are starches (I love bread and pasta and rice, etc.) and I drink wine or beer sometimes. Not like I used to. With age comes a low tolerance! LOL

Glad you were able to get all your mom's tax stuff taken care of.

Austin, I have no countertops yet and everything is piled up in the living and dining rooms, so there's really no room to cook, and no kitchen sink to wash anything. I'm just going to have to keep at the frozen foods and raw veggies for another week. I hope anyway. They said 2 to 3 weeks, and I am anxiously awaiting word on whether it's 2 or 3. Hopefully it will all come together next week. Fingers crossed! I had an up close and personal encounter with a bear in Wisconsin myself. It wasn't interested in me, but it was still scary!

B - oats with blueberries and chia seeds
L - Dr. McDougall soup and an orange, 2 wasa crackers
D - lentil soup and maybe an apple... not too hungry this evening yet

    Menu
    Breakfast
2 slices Ezekiel toast with a tbls of pb
    Lunch
Eating early today..I tried the McDougall split pea soup..REALLY yummy and filling..Our grocery store sells 3 kinds.I bought one of each to try..really nice when in a hurry Too!

    Dinner
Thinking fruit salad with some coconut flakes on top.
I have a sweet tooth and my love is ice cream..Easy to control because I only buy it for an occasional splurge/husband has a taste or a holiday..My husband and I enjoy all sweets but ice cream is our favorite...I also love carbs and really have to watch those..I notice a correlation between my scale and to many of those..(even fruit) I Especially really like good hardy breads, pretzels, and potatoes..once I start hard to stop.
Workout will be 1/2 hour treadmill and thinking weights..I'm off to get my mom's lunch ready and then a haircut..My ends are so dry can't wait to get those trimmed. Have a great day everyone..

hawksgirl your menu today sounds great!

I just found out it will be mid-March before I get my countertops. I am going to have to get some paper plates and plastic forks and get back to real salads. I can't do many more frozen entrees and tired of just noshing on raw veggies without being a real salad. The frozen vegan entrees are okay on occasion but I don't enjoy them on a regular basis and they all have oils even though I look for lower fat ones. I can't cook with no sink to wash dishes/pots/pans and no counters and all my kitchen tools in boxes. I'm not really upset that it is going to take so much longer than estimated, just disappointed that I have to wait.

So sorry about you kitchen delay..I remember the inconvenience and we only had new countertops installed. Everything had to be removed from the cabinets and stayed in our living room until they installed.
For paper products that's what I do for my mom. Her dishwashers needs to be repaired but I'm holding off until covid is more controlled. I let only essential people in her home and I have kept extremely bubbled myself since this all started. I'm all she has and I can't risk getting sick or possibly getting her sick.
I know what you mean..The less junk we put in our bodies the more we crave the good things..It helps that I like salads. Occasionally I crave warm which is when sweet potatoes, steamed veggies and soups come in handy.
Mason is suppose to have the last half of his staples removed tonight which also means they can remove his cone. Keeping my fingers crossed. Poor little guy has a hard time scratching, needs to be hand feed, can't play with his toys and he's so low to the ground he bangs it into the snow. I seem to remember you lost a kitty and a dog..(so sorry for your losses) but I think you still have a dog?
I thought I was done after our last one passed. I take it very hard when the time comes for them to move on..After a couple of years I really missed a little one around and we found Mason..
.I also find your menu's very inspiring!!! Have a great day and looking forward to hearing what's new with you😊

hawksgirl, so glad you're able to take care of your mom and keep her safe.

Sometimes I throw hot items into my salad like some baked sweet potato or water sauteed greens. In the winter especially it makes the salad more appealing.

I'm sure Mason will be super happy to get his staples removed and get out of the cone!

This week will still be raw veggies but starting the week after I am going back to real salads. I miss my salads!

    Today...
B - oats with blueberries and chia seeds
L - Dr. McDougall soup and an apple
    D - Amy's "meatloaf" and raw veggies

    Hi Mihani
I like your idea of putting warm things on a salad during the chilly months..I can definitely see how that could turn our green salad into a "comfort" meal.
Mason had his staples removed and the cone taken off..His next appointment is in 6 weeks. He needs to be there early and fasted. They will x-ray his knee and if all looks good they will remove the pin.
We did some usual Saturday errands and my husband put a new doorknob/deadbolt on my mom's front door. Her old one had seized up and would barely turn.
For your raw veggies do you use an oil free hummus or a dip? I have seen the Amy's frozen at the store but have never tried. Any favorites or recommendations? I have a couple of cans of the soup but I haven't made those yet.
Breakfast was a cup of Cheerios and a small nub of a banana with unsweetened almond milk
    Lunch
Large salad with all the g's except the berries. I used aged balsamic vinegar to dress it.
    Dinner
Thinking the rest of my banana with some blueberries and strawberries.
Yesterday I used my Cindy Crawford dvd full body workout. When the weather gets better my Husband and I walk the trails in our forest preserve on the weekends, until then I only workout m-f..That also gives my body "rest" days.
    Have a great Saturday 😊🍄

Hi All, dinner last night with family so I had two glasses of wine. Didn't eat too much, mostly salad which was delicious, and a little of the vegan items that had some oil.

hawksgirl, I have just been eating my veggies plain. The Amy's are okay for frozen entrees... I wouldn't recommend them if you are trying to stay WFPB. They all have oil and too much sodium, although some are better than others. I'm pretty tired of them right now, and this week I'm going to eat more of the soups I made myself and froze. I should have planned ahead better and frozen more meals before the kitchen remodel started.

I'll continue to post here until a new March page starts.

Sounds like a nice time catching up with family. I like having flexibility with what I eat because sometimes life happens and we just have to go with it.. Tomorrow is a new day..

Today I did some small projects to take them off my list..I write things down and when I have the time/energy I'll tackle it. It helps keep things more manageable.

Workout was the Cindy Crawford full-body workout. I think it's about 45min..

    Menu
    Breakfast
I had my salad. Leftovers from the big salad I made yesterday..added some raisins and chopped pecans(light handed with both) I dressed it with aged balsamic vinegar.
    Lunch
Thinking soup with a slice of Ezekiel bread
    Dinner
Bowl of fruit with my berries.

    Have a great day everyone

Good reminder hawksgirl... totally forgot we're starting a new month. I have no real inspiration so you can feel free to start the March thread or maybe someone else will. If not I'll come up with something tomorrow. Under the gun on a work project I didn't quite finish over the weekend or today at the office so that's my plan tonight.

B - ezekiel toast and an Evolve shake
L - Dr. McDougall soup, apple, 2 lundberg rice cakes
D - raw veggies, lentil soup from the freezer stash

    Back to work!
