We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.
Monday - crewahl (Charlie)
Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Wednesday - newmantjn (Todd)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - imastar2. (Derrick)
Today's Topic: Again, sorry if this has been covered recently, I'm the new guy....
Substitutions:
IIRC, one of the big WW angles was making good substitutions. Swap out this for that and save a bundle of calories (or points plus, as it were). What are some of your successful substitutions? What was a fail?

Successful:
Eggbeaters for eggs in omelets and spatzle
1. American 2% cheese slice for "real cheese" on omelets and hamburgers
2. REALLY GOOD sharp cheddar for crapola cheddar on tacos, some eggs, salads etc. More flavor, use less.
3. 96% Laura beef for any kind of hamburger. You get more after cooking and there is less fat.
4. Lite - sour cream, dressing, whipped topping...
5. Cosco Beef snack stick instead of breakfast sausage
FAIL:
Any fat free cheese

Funny the things people choose.
Success:
- Kraft FF cheddar slices
- FF Greek yogurt (store brand)
- 93% FF ground beef
- Hormel turkey pepperoni
- Light Pepperidge Farms bread
- Fish and chicken instead of most red meat
- Hellmann's low fat mayonnaise
- Healthy Choice Premium Fudge Bars (18 fudgicles for $10 at BJ's Wholesale)
- Light hamburger or hot dog buns
- Maple Grove Farms FF Caesar dressing (zero points for 2 tbsp)
- Chicken sausage (flavored) in recipes
Fail:
- Lite sour cream (doesn’t save enough points)
- Black bean brownies
- Light recipe pumpkin bread (doesn’t save enough points; doesn’t really “rise” to the occasion)
- Lightened up pecan pie recipe
- Light Sara Lee bread (big air gaps in multiple slices!)
- Chicken sausage (or any light sausage)
- Turkey bacon (bacon comes from pigs - end of discussion)
- Baked chips0 -
Good ground turkey for beef in most recipes
Greek yogurt based cheesecake
SF jello
0 pt rasp vinegarette
FF cottage cheese, gk yogurt, milk
Carbo-nada, millet & brown rice pastas
Crystal light (watered down) for diet pop
40 cal bread (it's just a way to get the other stuff in my mouth)
1 SP wrap
Chicken sausage
Fails -
I agree with the FF cheese (except I did like the yellow slice on toasted tomato sandwiches, but haven't had it in a few years)
Any fake snack products. Rather have less of the real deal.
There's got to be more, but I can't think of any 🤷0 -
Success:
boneless chicken breast
pork tenderloin
most well trimmed beef sirloin cuts
very lean ground beef, (usually have the "meat people" grids a top or bottom round roast)
chicken dinner sausage
Hebrew National 97% fat free hot dogs
Ultra thin cheese slices (real cheese)
Some Fiber one 2SP products
light cheese sticks
OS Trim beef and elk sticks
0 fat Greek yogurt
Nature's Own breads (whole wheat, and the "low salt")
Market Basket reduced calorie Italian bread
"mini" bagels
crisp SWEET apples
No Salt Added beef and chicken BROTH
Fail:
FF sliced cheese(?), or plastic? LOL
MOST WW recipes0 -
I don't do a lot of substitutions except for food allergies and sensitivities. That said, I do like:
- ground turkey
- lean ground beef for chili
- turkey hot dogs
- uncured low sodium bacon
- all fish
- low fat mayo is ok, but I usually don't bother buying a separate mayo for me
- I make lasagna with low fat cottage cheese but did that prior to WW
- I've used neufchatel cream cheese for years instead of full fat

Oh @Al_Howard I forgot about the HN hot dog! And the 0 SP Castleberrys chili for on top! Yum!
And I'm surprised by your WW recipe experience. I've liked all of them that I've made. Maybe that's partly because I've experimented a lot with different food and have a pretty solid handle on what I'll like and what I won't, tho I am still surprised occasionally.0 -

I do like the Hebrew National hot dogs - low in points, and they are as long as the bum, so it’s not a bite of bread at each end. They are, as MFP reminds me every week, a bit of a sodium bomb.
Fortunately I’m NOT overly concerned about water weight and I don’t have HBP. I am, however, at the point in life where I think more about that.0
