We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Monday - crewahl (Charlie)
Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Wednesday - newmantjn (Todd)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Al_Howard

Today's Topic: Advice that sticks with you - maybe a one liner or two from the old GOADIES board (or anywhere)

I was on the old WW GOADIES board for maybe 2 years before it got shut down. I was online only, so that was my group. I got all my back and forth, pithy comments and truisms that stayed with me from that board. And it worked!

If you had to pick a few golden nuggets, either from that board, in person meetings or really anyplace, what would they be? What was the sentence or two of good advice that somebody said that really stuck with you?

Lose weight in the kitchen; gain strength in the gym.
Don’t do anything to lose weight that you’re not willing to do to keep it off.
    Suck it up, Buttercup.
Use a compass rather than a clock to measure your journey.

    Weight loss isn't linear.

The scale will eventually catch-up to your behavior. (Goes both ways.)

I used Tom Petty's line "The waiting is the hardest part" in my signature line on the old WW board. It was useful to see that phrase regularly. I frequently sing it to myself.

I was whining about a two day up streak on Sunday and I remembered this one:

No matter your exercise, build, DNA etc., if you are not losing, you need to eat less.

The lesson that's stuck with me is from way before WW. It was a church group, and I can't even remember the program we followed, but the lesson was two-fold.

1 Really taste your first bite of food and decide if it's "worth it" or not. When I started doing that, I realized that there were a lot of desserts that I really didn't like that much. This is especially helpful when I travel. And keeps me from mindlessly clearing my plate of something that's just meh. Also helped with alcoholic bevvies and milkshakes on our all inclusive trip.

2 The 'truth' that the first bites of something are the best. This one is not always true, but sometimes, it saves me a lot of calories.

Charlie once said in a post something like- it’s just about trying to live with some reasonable limits.
