We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Wednesday - newmantjn (Todd)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Al_Howard

Today's Topic: Vacation recovery.

Today is my first day back from a vacation (is it a vacation if you are retired?). Of course I ate and drank too much, but I did ski a bit, so then there's that.

Do you have any strategy for your return? For getting back on the horse that kicked you off? Any mind tricks? Anything?

I try to freeze a few good low point dishes and stock my frig with foods that last and will make healthy eating easy and enjoyable.

Unfortunately, we were really busy (9 overnights with the GDs then scurrying to get ready to leave) the two weeks before we left in Feb and this prep never happened. I'm still struggling to get back OP!

My plan to get back on the wagon is as follows.

Day 1. Today - track everything
Day 2. Hit the gym - my legs were quite sore today and I have gone back early, and it did not go well.
Day 3. Day of reckoning - weigh in, count it up and cry. Continue tracking and working out.

Being back home in a familiar environment makes it easier for me to get back on the band wagon. I don't throw all caution to the wind when on vacation either. Muddling along right now.

What is this "vacation" of which you speak? ;)

It's a wonderful return to almost normal Al. Except for masks and social distancing of course. But it's sure gave my soul a lift when we went. 🙂. I hope you get to try it again soon!

Looking towards going up to Maine again. Maybe visit Mom, Dad, oldest brother's and wife's gravesite.
Might root around a few places we'd go to, in the hinterlands.

We went to Punta Cana DR. Got a killer deal on an all inclusive and a nice upgrade too. It was our first all inclusive, and I think we're spoiled. It was soooo nice!

My return from vacation seems to hinge on how I handle the vacation. If I’m too restrictive - focusing on points rather than experience, missing out of local specialties, etc. - I may end up overeating when I return as a form of revenge. If I’m overly indulgent, I’ll just get back to what I should do.
