We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.
Monday - crewahl (Charlie)
Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Wednesday - newmantjn (Todd)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Al_Howard
Today's Topuc: Planning ahead - do you do it?
I remember this article from 2011 (I searched and found it using key words "Weightwatchers, St. Patrick's day and Car Bomb - seriously).

The message to me was you can have real fun with real food and drink (not pretend fun with shamrock shaped green pepper slices) and still stay on plan, you just need a plan (and you need to stick to it.
Do you plan ahead for events like today?

Today is easy to plan for - we aren't doing squat due to covid jail.
Tomorrow we have a corned beef dinner planned. I will get a few Guinness Draft, rather than a 13% Stout, probably cut down on the size of the bread pudding, skip the slice of bread with dinner and limit my potatoes to a couple of small ones. That's all I got...0 -
Although we're 2 weeks out from our 2nd shot, still not gong out to eat. Skipping the corned beef this year, so same old same old.0

Nothing going on for today - I’m only wearing a green shirt because that’s what happened to be next in the rotation, which should give you an idea of how anal I can be.
But I think a plan for any sort of event is important.
We had dinner with friends last week - unmasked, not socially distanced - for the first time since the pandemic. These happen to be the last people we socialized with before the pandemic., and all four of us are two-plus weeks beyond our second vaccination. I planned for two pieces of lasagna, a beer, a salad with dressing, and a handful of cashews. I ended up with with a salad, two beers, a handful of cashews, and 1.5 pieces of lasagna. The key wasn’t sticking rigidly to the plan; the key was having a plan as a framework from which I could make changes. I knew I was n the ballpark of “okay”, and was able to make choices on the fly.
Unlike the WW article - from the good old days when WW actively solicited men - sometimes the plan is “damn the torpedoes; full speed ahead!” and deal with the consequences later. Thats an acceptable but expensive alternative.0 -
I actually kind of like planning for a special meal/event. It helps keep me focused for up to a week before the meal/event.
For the week prior to Thanksgiving, I tried to bank 300-400 calories rather than just eating at maintenance for the day. It sounds easy, but my calorie allowance for losing one pound a week is only 1300. I liked that experience so much that I considered making one meal a week - - like a Sunday roast - - a special meal to save up for. I didn't do it, but it will remain a possibility from time to time.0 -
We did have a wonderful albeit small 9 oz Wagyu New York Steak split down the middle. Reverse seared to perfection. Worth the points.0

St Patti's day came and went and no green anything for me except my fruits and veggies supplement. Totally no celebration of this day whatsoever even though I am Irish.0

We did a small Corned beef with some boiled sweet potato and green beans almondine. Then watched the Quiet Man on Netflix. Dinner was higher poits than normal but not completly out of the park.1
