It took me by such surprise and I was so hurt, that I let those stupid voices into my head, I was depressed, and I started down that path of complete self pity. I kept telling myself “do not lose control and gain back those 30 pounds”. Every day got a little worse, until a week ago when I started eating everything in sight, ending with a trip to Dairy Queen where I ordered and ate TWO large sized blizzards. I forced myself to step on the scale the next day, gained over 5 pounds, recorded it, and have most of it off already. When Rick announced the end of the UAC I thought “that just figures, one more thing to go wrong”. So to say I’m grateful for so many stepping up to continue this journey is an understatement.
Needless to say, I am definitely NOT in the winners circle. I also was .6 away from a goal I’d set myself for June, which is now unattainable. But I’m here, back on track, moving forward.
Yesterday, @biketheworld (and others, including myself) mentioned that we have had some difficulty staying "motivated" this month. What do YOU do to keep yourself motivated on your weight loss and/or healthy eating journey?
@victorious55 had a terrific response that I wanted to share here as well.victorious55 wrote: »@biketheworld, you've done the best thing (coming back to accountability). Congratulations!!!
It's not easy to "climb back into the wagon" but it's worth it! and you have done that.
You are definitely correct about the UAC group. It is the most successful group for me. I am also glad that it will continue. Thank you @MadisonMolly2017 and @Mrs_Hoffer
I also need UAC badly even though I am in maintenance. Sometime I fall off the wagon and I tell myself "climb up again" because you do not need to buy new clothes. The cost of not climbing back up is too much.- Health-wise

I thought it might be helpful to share ideas for keeping ourselves MOTIVATED as today's topic.

I need the accountability of having other real people with whom I share accountability. What I mean by 'share' is that we are mutually committed to each other. It's not just me checking in a making a confessional, but rather, I need to be willing to read what the other team members are sharing too.
Some time ago, one of our great team members, @SummerSkier shared her method of having white and black marbles that symbolized each day. If she went outside her limits, she put a black marble in the jar. Good days were represented by white marbles. As long as the jar was mostly white, she knew that her overall trend was healthy.
While that idea does not satisfy those who love precision, that concept is what works for me.
But, if I am only accountable to me about me, then I will wind up out of bounds too often.10 -
Thanks to @MaltedTea and @victorious55 for their encouraging posts on the MFP Challenge board promo for the July UAC.
We need your help too!
Please go to the link below and tell others why you love the UAC!! Thank you!

Actually @RangerRickL it's MUCH easier than that.I have multiple goblets from horse shows I went to years ago. For good days I stick a marble in one goblet and for days out of control I put a marble in the bad goblet. The good goblets pretty much overflow and the bad goblet is pretty lonely. I accept that I cannot be perfect in maintenance and my character will have some bad days but the 2 goblets remind me that I am winning. The folks I admire most are the ones who STAY here even when they are struggling. To me those are the strongest and most committed folks. It's really hard when you are struggling to stay here and not just disappear. That's what I love about this challenge. You don't FAIL.
I have been following this journey lurking this month friends. I knew that going back in to the office would make it more difficult for me to be on the internet as MFP ap on my phone tends to crash more often than not, so I decided just to lurk in June while I got accustomed to new habits. I am glad that UAC will be continuing next month.

A pass day, I miscalculated my calories and went over. As a result, I ended up eating more. I guess today should count as a gray marble 😪.

From Mrs_Hoffer:
“I thought it might be helpful to share ideas for keeping ourselves MOTIVATED as today's topic.”
How I’ve decided to get back on track:
1. Figured out there were FiVE more days in June or 1/6 of the month - almost a week. Decided to make the most of these 5 days to turn things around & enter July with my better habits in place.
🌸A short term PLAN always helps me.
2. Decided to boost my daily steps back to > 10,000 for each of the next 5 days. When I woke up this morning, I got dressed and did 90 minutes. It’s now 1:00 PM & I’m at 9,000 steps.
On my walk: deep breaths, self-kindness, acknowledgement of grief & that excess food will not fix it, focused on how strong my body feels & how gorgeous the natural beauty on the walk! Took 20-30 photos of 4 plants to use as art references.
Listened to affirmations during my walk to get my Mindset in the right place.
🌸My WALKS help me in numerous, essential ways - beyond exercise.
3. Figured out we needed to get a wider variety of healthy options in our fridge/pantry. Done! 🎉
🌸Appealing, HEALTHY FOODS ready to go are KEY!
4. Reminded myself that I am *still* well within healthy BMI Range. Relaxed. Draconian measures are not needed.
🌸Being aware of the REALITY, and how quickly I can turn it around if I do so NOW, helps me.
5. Reaffirmed how important my art practice is to my healthy regime. Got the $105 sewing machine working!!! YAY spent 2-3 hrs yesterday & re-doubled my efforts today! Very excited by what I can create now!!
🌸Having hobbies & other activities helps me thrive!

Exercise – yes, bike ride 60 minutes, and some light cardio.
Tracking – yes
Calories – yes
2 pass days.
A question/prompt from @Mrs_Hoffer:
“What do YOU do to keep yourself motivated on your weight loss and/or healthy eating journey?”
A reply from @Winner_in_Life:
“Discipline - a more reliable thing”
I agree with the suggestion that discipline in necessary. There is a discussion thread titled “The Myth of Motivation (and what you need instead)” that resonates with me. It was started in 2012 but I first saw it a couple of years ago and I found it helpful.
We often have reminders from various members about habits – forming good ones and ditching bad ones.
So, I just remind myself that I must do it. One thing I must get back to soon is going to the gym. I haven’t been back since they closed last year but it would be good for my strength training. Cycling and cardio are fine for general fitness but I need to work on strength as I get older.

25 June - Pass day. Daughter called round and I chose to indulge for once
✅ - Exercise 100+ Minutes - yoga/dance/walking/aerobics/strength
❌ - Calories within budget (not massively over, but over nevertheless.
❌ - Tracked everything (tracked most, but couldn’t remember exactly what I had)
2️⃣ Pass Days Remaining
@Winner_in_Life - I will take determination over motivation any day of the week.
Whatever we do, it’s always a choice.

Great comments and insight about discipline vs motivation. Thanks everyone!
@snowshoe072 Wow is right! You're such a hard worker, and I bet it turned out very nice!
@MadisonMolly2017 your photos are stunning! You have such a good eye. And you are so right about nature being inspirational! I lovemy And good for you for deciding to begin NOW rather than "waiting" until July to turn things around. You're such an inspiration!!
@TerriRichardson112 you are absolutely right about discipline vs motivation. Thanks for your input.
I made another trip to Cinci today to visit my sister. We went to the movies and just hung out. Good thing that I walked early this morning before I made the 2 hour trip (because I didn't get home until 8pm and I'm too tired to go out for another walk tonight.5 -
@SummerSkier Thanks for clarifying!! I can just imagine those horse show goblets overflowing.
BTW: Roxy the rescue mare is doing very well in Cave Creek, AZ. Her ribs are no longer showing, but it will take some time to build up her very atrophied hip muscles. In addition, a 13 year old rider who you would like is loving on her several times per week.
Best to you Summer

@Winner_in_Life Discipline can be attained by someone being motivated to make changes in their personal habits. It is very difficult for most of us humans to change our habits. The UAC is about helping us build those good habits and replace our bad habits.
You have discipline! That is a powerful and wonderful habit.
Your friend, Rick

I am lucky that I have the ability to make choices in many areas of life. Not all areas and sometimes life just throws &#*% at us. One area I do get to make choices is food and I do my best to make good choices. It’s not that I need motivation to make good choices, I like the motivation to reinforce my good choices and to remind myself that I GET to do that. Plus it helps with my health issues. Reading everyone’s posts reminds me that I am not alone and so I will keep plugging along.

2 of 3 again. Tracking and exercise? Got it. Calories? Nope. Le sigh.
Our morning bike ride once again ended prematurely when my daughter had another anxiety attack. She ran into the railing and nearly fell off her bike. I was ahead of her this time and didn't see it. I stopped some way down and waited for her and my sister to catch up and when they didn't I rode back to them. My daughter could barely stand and her skin was ice cold and clammy, so my sister and I helped her over to a low retaining wall, where we sat for probably 20 minutes before she felt able to get back on the bike and ride back to my truck. We did make it a little further than last time. She did tell me tonight that she feels much more comfortable on this new bike. So... baby steps.
I had a lovely breakfast with some old friends and their spouses from my last job (well, two jobs ago, but I don't count the one in between - wasn't there long and hated every minute). One of my friends will be 80 in a few months and he looked fabulous. He and his wife apparently used to joke that I was his "work wife." Never really thought of it that way as we didn't spend that much time together, but we worked in the same department for close to 15 years. It made me laugh to hear that his wife thought that. My other friend is almost 58. His husband has had a rough year and is now almost completely blind. We talked and laughed and ate and decided to do it again next month. Gods, it was so good to see them and I'm still smiling over it.
It's late now and I'm off to bed with the plan of rising early tomorrow and going for a long solo ride.9 -
