A bit late today because we are looking for a house in Fort Myers, FL.
We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.
Monday - crewahl (Charlie)
Tuesday – 88Olds
Wednesday - newmantjn (todd)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Al_Howard
Today's Topic: Changes
How do deal with changes? Your routine is in place. You’ve found your grove. Everything is working. Then there’s a disruption- home, work, life. Something happens and your smooth routine is derailed. Been there? How do you keep your plan together?

OK this is my second go at this. I just erased the first draft as it lapsed into extensive whining. I don’t want to move. But its going to happen. And I’ve moved before. And transferred jobs. And retired and move again. How?
It’s my plan and its up to me. It’s great to have habits and routines that seem easy to follow. But those routines only became routine because I decided to do it at some point and stuck to it. It takes concentration to build new habits but its doable.
The basic building blocks remain the same all the way back to WW day 1, eat less, move more. Those two things can travel anywhere.0 -
Actually, I’m a big believer in sulking.
I can deal with change in my routine; the element that I have a hard time with is unexpected change to my routine. The trip to Dallas this past weekend was fine, but if I go to a restaurant planning on X and they don’t have X, I get jammed up. It takes me some time to get to “Okay, now what?” During that time, I tend to withdraw until I can process that dastardly unexpected change they foisted on me.
So I guess the answer is “not well”. I can adapt, and I’ve certainly got a new set of routines since we retired and moved. The key for that was being able to anticipate and avoid surprises that upset me. I’m a little bit like David Banner in that regard.0 -
I dislike change, of any sort, so our WW meating day change threw me. Guess it was good, as I'm on a losing streak, more or less. We'll see what WI says in the AM.0

Gotta luv it Charlie. I do much better with routines for sure. Sulking, whining, shoulder shrugging? All good.

God I hate moving! In the first 60 years of my life I had moved 4 times and 3 of them were before the age of 5! Since I met and married my DW 10 years ago, I have moved 3 times and my DW keeps bringing the subject up again!
Any way what I have learned from it is that disruptions are temporary and that new patterns and habits will emerge from the changes. Its not life or death, its just differnt than it was!0 -
Disruption of my routine is often challenging. I think I have two "modes" of operations sometimes: "in the groove," and "survival mode." I flip into survival mode when my groove is disrupted. This means that the choices I make may not be perfect, but they are hopefully less self-destructive than they could be!0

This can be very difficult to deal with depending on short term or long term. The idea for me is to keep my cool when the disruptions occur as in diet. Moving has not been a issue since DW and I have lived at current residence now 23 years. I'm a Broker/Realtor am dealing with people moving constantly so the routine of others doing it discourages me on a fairly large scale. However we are on the verge of renovating and that can be quite disruptive. I believe it's a mindset to just do the best I can to stay focused which has gone off the deep end as of the last few months.0
