I am going to start my first-ever fat fast this upcoming Thursday. Hoping to go 5 days. I've made the decision to aim for around 1,200 (I just don't feel comfortable with 1,000 calories). I'll share as I go through it here. I am very curious to see what my energy feels like, how my skin reacts, what happens with bloating, and other side effects -- but mostly I'm doing it as a reset to get myself back on track with keto.

I just did my first fat fast last week. I lost 6 lbs and have only gained 1 back after returning to normal eating. I only did a 3 day fat fast. I think if I plan better and make more specific meals in advance I can go for at least 5 days next time. I am just taking it slow and eating less calories now after the fat fast, so that is awesome, too, because before I would have felt deprived at the lower calorie goal.

gmansmom2, definitely post here to let us know how it goes!

I actually have already started to set up my diary for my fat fast so I do all my grocery shopping ahead of time. I also know that I really want to end each day with a fat bomb so I psychologically feel like I'm actually getting a delicious dessert (and thus not starving myself, which I've done too much of in the past to do again now).

Would love to hear if you end up with any absolute favorite mini meals that you think were particularly helpful.

fat fast is 90 percent of calories from fat, 10 from protien, and a set calorie level usually 1200,,, today i had butter for most of the day, and then a few ounces of tuna with whole mayo for dinner,, surprisingly i am not very grouchy

Dude... Buy the Fat Fast Cookbook, Much as I enjoy butter, pumpkin cheesecakes, butter roasted pecans, (and more!) are so much better. Bulletproof Coffee is another good one. Heck - my coconut custard recipe uses erythritol (which doesn't need to be counted per author of Fat Fast Cookbook) and it's 89% fat. I'm shuddering a little picturing you gnawing on a stick of butter.

Tim "whoa" is right! Whoa on that butter dude!! Get the Fat Fast cookbook Kira mentioned or search in here for recipes. I do love my Kerrygold but only butter and tuna??? You are the keto-man. I would die.

I shoot for 85% or > fat on my FF days. I had 87% today with 3% carbs and 10% protein. I had my bulletproof coffee and then fasted until a late lunch early dinner in which I had 4 slices of bacon, 2 eggs fried in butter and a WHOLE avocado. I was stuffed and it was all yummy. That was all about 1000 calories.

Eat some good stuff man. Don't suffer!!

I guess I should explain myself a little, in years past I have done atkins time and again, lost allot of weight, only to not make it to goal, and gain it back, story of many peoples lives, this time, i decided, I would do it differant, I would be hard core, I would stick to the basics, not try to make it "fun", not make desserts that were low carb, not make home made ice cream that was low carb, not fix the fancy dinners that use mock items like callaflower ect ect, why because everytime i did, the carbs would start sneaking back up and the weight would slow and desires for the wrong foods would always seem to be present, so by doing away with them all together, ditching those urges , and sticking to only the food s that atkins reccomended in his original book, not all this net carb stuff, not all this sugar alcohol stuff, and all the tricks, ( although good for some, and helps many) those were not good for me,, and this time around, I am losing weight nice, keeping it off, and FEELING great about it, i now feel that I can succed this time around because i am sticking to the basics, and atkins fat fast in the original book used a few simple recipies and those are the ones i use when fat fasting, because for me they are the core of it all,, and i am staying on that course this time for my own good,,
I hope this helped to explain things from where I am coming from and I hope it helps others

Thanks for explaining, it puts things in perspective. I can understand how simplifying it may help. Though also ask yourself could I keep doing this long term?

Logical Tim. And I'm totally with you for part of what you're saying. When I eat a low carb bread, I end up comparing it to the real thing and focusing on all the ways it doesn't live up to that standard. It makes me want the real thing more, and the substitute item less. I'd much rather skip those items and instead enjoy the things that low carb does well. Give me my steak and add some butter (forget mock mashed potatoes made with cauliflower). Add some creamed spinach with extra cream and butter. Again, don't try to make keto foods into what they can never be; but enjoy and revel in those things that they are.

So along those lines, a low carb brownie isn't as good as the real thing, but cheesecake... now that's right up low carb's alley. I REVEL in that type of keto food. My coconut custard is another one. Lily's Chocolate yet another. For me, these are the items that make it sustainable for me to do this forever. I'm never deprived because I enjoy these awesome foods that are perfectly keto already - what's there to improve?

That's the beauty of this though - everyone finding the path that works best for them, and sticking to that. I know for some people, the low carb bread and mock mashed potatoes are the things that make it sustainable for them. For you, gnawing on that stick of butter is a better approach than another fat fast choice. Ain't keto grand? Gotta love it.

At least tell me it's salted butter. And henceforth going forward, I will think of you as, "butterguy".

I totally believe in folks doing what is best for them. And I'm happy for you to have found a process that works for you, Tim.

But for the others out there who come across this thread and are looking for other approaches...

I have a long weekend coming up with no social obligations (and the fiance will even be traveling out of town = no distractions). I have decided to use this time for myself by doing my first fat fast. I am using this time to focus on me and take care of myself by doing this fat fast. For me, it's a *positive* step I'm taking to make room in my busy life to do something good for me. And that does feel fun...

I am not dreading it or expecting to suffer (as I have with juicing fasts I've done in the past). Rather than cringe because I'll be subsiding on juiced kale and broccoli and suffering from coffee-withdraw headaches, I'm going to be eating like a queen!

I'm actually really excited and I am expecting it to be fun and rather indulgent! I have been planning it out for over a week. I've already mapped out my meals for the five days (anyone is invited to check out my diary for this upcoming Thursday-Monday, but realize I'm still fine-tuning the macros; most days I'm at 80-85% fat and I'm trying to get that to 90%).

This is my first fat fast, so I am not saying I'm an expert and I might not have it all right -- but my main goal here is to reignite my love affair with this way of eating -- with eating delicious high fat foods I absolutely love! I expect to be fully in ketosis by the end, and if I drop some pounds and inches, great, but this is not my primary goal. I've struggled since early July to get back into the keto lifestyle, so for me this is more of a reset; a reminder of why I love this way of eating and how great it makes me feel. And to emphasize that last part...

I suffer from depression at times. I have never in my life felt as emotionally stable and content as I have when eating keto. Lately, I've had too many carbs -- and they are not only making the scale creep up, but more importantly it's causing me to have emotional struggles again, trouble sleeping, and more.

So, for me, I am most definitely expecting my long fat fast weekend to be fun. I mean, I have put as much planning into this fat fast as any party I've ever planned. I have structured my weekend around eating the foods that I LOVE and that love me back by making me feel better.

This fast is a treat -- it's not a punishment -- for me.

Alllllll of that being said, since this is my first fat fast I could be totally wrong about my expectations. I will definitely post to let others know how my approach goes...

    Tim,

I understand where you are coming from and I appreciate it. I wish you much success with what you have figured out works for you. I am a true believer that we are all on our own journeys and our needs along the way are individual. Whenever I stall I always say "I'm going back to the basics" so I definitely understand that keeping it simple is a huge benefit in weight loss.

That being said. If I did not have "treats" I would die. I don't want to suffer at all and luckily with all the options keto allows I never have.

    Jasmine,

I love your story and I am thrilled that you are taking time for yourself and focusing on getting back to where you want to be. Good for you!!

We are all individuals but I do want to warn you - I have NOT looked at your diary yet - but in all 3 of the fat fasts I have done in the last 6 months the first couple of days are not easy. I was loving what I ate but was so so hungry. By day 3 the hunger is gone and I almost don't want to eat my calories. Just be prepared for anything. When I FF I can physically tell when I switch into deep ketosis and my strips always confirm I am right. The hunger stops and I pee like crazy (sorry if TMI). Good luck!! Let us know how it goes.

I will post my results so far in the next message.

So, when you see these results please know that I was coming off shark week and was up ~3 pounds when I started.

My Fat Fast results so far:
Sunday - this was my "transition to the FF day" I always try to cut calories and up fat the day before I start.
    Monday - lost 1.4 pounds
    Tuesday - lost 1.2 pounds
    Wed - lost 1.8 pounds
Total so far is 4.4 - 2.8 of water weight = 1.6 actual weight loss so far

I hit ketosis on Tuesday - up to the moderate to large amounts. Wed was my first drop below my previous low weight. I had not lost weight in 3 weeks and had traveled 2 of the 3 for work prior to this. I gain about 5 pounds of water weight on each trip I take and lose that within 2-3 days of being back.

I am doing a 5 day fast so I will post Thursday and Friday loses and then be done. I am 2.2 pounds from my final goal weight and hoping to be close by Friday. On my last fast I stopped at 3 days because I stopped losing. I will do the same this time. On my last fast I lost 4 actual pounds for the week.

    Me again...

    Thursday - lost 2.6 pounds.

That is a total on the fast of 7 pounds - 2.8 pounds of water weight = 4.2 actual pounds lost. I am going to stop today. I am below my goal and yesterday was a tough day because I worked out twice. It paid off but now its time to give my body a break.

Good luck to everyone else. I can't wait to hear final results!!

I'm half way through day 2. I'm down 2 lbs, to 153.8. Feeling really great about that. I definitely have had some moments of hunger, but overall my energy has been great and I haven't felt like I was suffering/starving/torturing myself. I really am loving the foods that I've been eating. They are almost all from Dana Carpenter's fat fast cookbook. These first two days I've been at work, so I needed really easy office-friendly mini meals. I've had pepperoni chips (just nuked them in the microwave for 30 seconds) dipped in whipped cream cheese, and I've had roasted pecans in butter and sea salt. So yummy!

Dinner last night was duck liver pate, meunster cheese, and black cured olives. Then I made my own version of lemon fat bombs with a whip cream dollop (fat bomb was 1 TBSP Kerrygold butter + 1 TBSP coconut oil + .5 TBSP shredded coconut + 5 drops Lemon Liquid Stevia and the whip cream was just organic whipping cream + Vanilla Liquid Stevia).

I know not everyone would be salivating over this menu, but these are some of my favorite foods! Seriously felt decadent. I am in a super happy mode today. It's 11:30 a.m. and I just had coffee + cream this morning (I made the decision to skip bulletproof coffee because I'd rather have those calories at dessert time). I'm not even hungry yet, but I'm having my pecans in order to stay ahead of my hunger.

Anyway, I feel great and I'm so glad I'm doing this fat fast! I'll post again tomorrow or the next day with an update.
