Wow. This has been a roller coaster of a week--weight-wise and otherwise. The day after my weigh-in last week, my weight started going up. It was like every day there was another half pound showing on the scales. When I saw myself going from the 132's to the 133's and then finally to the 134's, I decided that something had to give. Looking at my food diary didn't show a significant change in intake, and my slipping from 10K steps a day down to around 7K a day had not caused a sudden jump before. (And this had been going on for several weeks.) But I knew I was on a very slippery slope, so I started upping my steps and watching certain foods a little more closely. So I was happy to actually have this tiny loss for today.
On to other things, we started Bella on her insulin last Friday and she seems to feel a little better although the flat-foot issue remains. So when she moves, she moves like a little bunny. Hard to believe that only three weeks ago, she was zipping around this house like crazy. Change can come quick. I also learned this week that my contract is indeed ending August 9. I knew from the get-go that the emergency response contract I am on was funded December 9-August 9, and I wasn't really surprised because several emergency task forces are being stood down entirely, so to have the Epidemiology Task Force reduced should have been expected. But somehow I had allowed myself to just not think about it and hope that perhaps some of us would be retained until we see what happens when schools start back and the weather turns cool and people are back inside more. But they are also sending a lot of the full-time federal folks back to their programs, showing their intent to greatly reduce the response team. (I may have told you all this before, so forgive me if I'm repeating myself!)
Anyway, you all know how well I do change--bwhahaha!!
And change keeps rolling in. Today, I'm listening to the sound of a neighbor who backs up to us building a new patio, and all I can think is, "Oh no. They'll have loud parties and disturb my peaceful time on my own patio." How's that for projecting? I know that's a part of my personality I need to work on.
I hope all has been going well for all of you. Sheesh, it's good to hear that your granddaughter is doing so well with her diabetes. I loved the show and tell! We can learn a lot from kids. And you did so well on your trip. Once again, you're my inspiration.
Lois, I hope work is not killing you this week and that you're still feeling more like your old self. I check the Phoenix temps in the paper every morning and think of you. We hear that a lot of people are fleeing the fires, congestion, etc., in Cali and are headed to places like Phoenix and Denver, which is probably a boon for your business. I hope they don't overload you with work. I think you and I both get sucked in the overworking cycle every now and then. I am certainly going to do better now that I now I'm 4 weeks from unemployment again.
Kelly, I believe this you are either away at the cabin or getting ready to go there. Hope you take lots of photos to share when you get back to WiFi. I think everyone should take a technology break every now and then. I find that I'm on Facebook less and less these days and I'm not watching much television either. When I do it's baseball or a cooking show. I get enough COVID at work (and yes--I'm really worried about Delta and kids in areas where the parents don't believe in vaccinations) and get enough national and local news by reading the newspaper while having my morning coffee.
Well, today's a day off with a long to-do list, so I'll check back later to hopefully read your posts.

And up up and away we go like the big red balloon. I got in my Mon/Wed walks last week. And I had a work bowling event last night, while I didn't bowl, I did stop by and see my co-workers and had two pieces of the pesto pizza and a side salad. Too much sodium at lunch that a coworker had brought in as well. So I'll own it.
So last week was a crazy week. Thursday morning woke up to a pain at the bridge of my nose. As if I'd hit my glasses on something and the pads dug into my nose. I don't recall it ever happening, but it hurt like the dickens. Friday towards the last hours of the day, it hurt to wear my glasses on my nose. So I used my left hand to lift them up just off my nose to finish my project. Finished work and went to the mirror and saw the area quite inflamed. Again, don't recall ever hitting my nose. Saturday morning I woke up and couldn't even put on my glasses. The bridge of my nose to the tip of my nose was inflamed... didn't know why. So when Audrey came up for pedis - I made her drive since I couldn't wear glasses. We proceeded to scan pictures all day for her dad's memorial that I helped her with, had to scooch super close to my laptop because I can't see very well without glasses. I iced the areas a couple of times throughout the day. Hurt like the dickens to touch it, but once applied the ice felt nice. Sunday morning. I woke up with the whole t-zone inflamed and a Humphrey Bogart bulbous nose ( I don't have a very big nose). and my eyelids could now feel the inflammation. I called the teledoc service and they told me to go to urgent care or the ER. So I called our family doctor and friend, he was able to see me. Something called facial cellulitis (infection of the face) and I have no idea how it was contracted. Started on antibiotics and NSAIDs for pain and swelling (thank goodness no prednisone). The swelling started to go down Sunday night after the first dose. Monday was still inflamed, but receding. Yesterday was much better and today it's just about gone. Sarah - I thought of you and your mysterious facial rash last year. I don't know what caused this either but I'm glad it's going away. If it happens again, I'm not going to wait as long to contact the dr.
Sarah I'm glad Bella is showing some improvement. I was never good when our furbabies were ever ill. And ugh to think about your contract ending. Even when we know it's coming, it still stinks. And work is crazy busy. We're hiring new site managers and purchasing members so I've been busy with cell phone, iPad and software log in set ups along with my regular duties. So busy busy busy. Congrats on your reduction!! Stay focused. Your comment about your neighbor's patio made me chuckle. But I can relate. I think very similarly when my neighbors improve their back yards...hahaha. They've all added those blessed string lights and being in a two story - I see them all around when I go to bed upstairs. I'm thinking of getting them just so they see the glare as well. haha.
Sheesh looking forward to your update this week. Happy to hear your daughter had her first vaccine and LOVE LOVE LOVE how your granddaughter is embracing her lifestyle. And I love your comment about giving it to God to worry about it for me. I forget that a lot!
Kelly - enjoy the cabin and being tech-free!

BTW - woke up to a thunder/lightning storm. We will have a high of 100 and 68% humidity. That's like 100% humidity for us Arizonans!0

I'm very pleased, and feel like I earned every ounce of the reduction because coming back from a vacation where I ate and drank more freely, this week I've felt more hungry and sore from my workouts. My trainer kicked my kitten Monday, so I decided to do a low heart rate walk on the TM. While I was on it, President Biden's speech came on TV, so I watched that, and after texted with my daughter while walking, lol. Well, I went over 3.1 miles, and was stoked until I saw that the Apple Watch credited me with only 15 minutes of exercise. Wut?
I guess I wasn't getting my HR high enough to get many "exercise minutes". Boo. Today, I plan to do a cardio class, and then this afternoon I have a much delayed (Covid) eye exam with a new doctor. (My old one retired) I just noticed that the form says "if you're going to be checked for cataracts, you must not wear soft contact lenses for at least 7 days". OOPS. Oh well. I'm sure my eyes will be dilated, and I hate that!
Lois, that t-zone infection was alarming. I know that area is so sensitive! I'm glad you got into the doctor and caught it early enough to prevent further spread. Wow. Take care. I remember the overly busy days (almost all of them, lol) when I was working. Lord. I don't think I could do it now. Hang in there. Looking back, I wish I had just said "f - it" more often, and not put off important self care and the rest of life in general. If things had gotten done a bit less quickly, it wouldn't have made much difference to clients in the long run. The pressure employers and clients apply is just unreasonable sometimes. The way the market works, if things are going undone, they employ more people. That message won't get through if we work harder and longer. Anyway, that's hindsight. Like you and Sarah and Kelly, I worked harder and longer, lol!
Sarah, I'm glad to hear Bella is better. How are the injections going for you and hubby and Bella? Does she resist? I hope your hubby participates too . . you won't want that as a sole responsibility going forward. Sorry to hear the stupid feds are letting your contract expire. Now does not seem like the time to let this happen. I'm thinking it will be renewed. Congratulations on your reduction in spite of all the changes. Keeping your eye on what's happening and making adjustments is a flexibility strength . . maybe you're not as resistant to change as you think?
Kelly, thinking of you and hoping the weather is perfect and you're completely unplugged and getting some fun and rest!
Gotta run.

Congrats Sheesh!! Great reduction - Great focus! Good luck with your eye appointment. And I have a similar challenge with my Garmin HR monitor. Especially since I'm on the beta blockers. So I have to ensure I set my watch to an activity of walking/treadmill etc to ensure I get the proper credit. Work is crazy busy and I am loving the activity.0

OMG, Lois. You know that I totally relate to issues with your face. That is the worst! I can remember saying that if I was dealing with redness, swelling and pain anywhere else on my body, it would have been easier. I'm so glad it was something that could be diagnosed and treated quickly. I think the worst thing with my episode was that no one could figure out why or what to do and nothing except time seemed to work.
Sheesh, I've never been asked to stop wearing my soft lenses before an eye exam and they always check for cataracts. I know lenses reshape the cornea a bit, so it makes sense they'd make you take them out before a procedure. But a check-up? I'll ask my doc next time if I should do that, too. I see a retina specialist because of that tiny tear years ago.
Work went pretty smoothly this week and I'm already thinking about how odd it will feel to not be working in a few weeks. Maybe I will be able to get some things done, but I do like the structure that working gives me, and of course, this job is interesting if nothing else.
I have a party to go to this Sunday--just the women--to see my friend's new backyard pool and pond. For some reason, though, I am just not looking forward to it. I'm driving up with my friend Linda and we've agreed to stay only a couple of hours. Although we can bring swimsuits to cool off in the pool (and they have fountains), it is supposed to be hellishly hot day. And there's a part of me that just does not like larger gatherings. Not because of Covid, but just because. Hubby--on the other hand--loves this type of thing and is sorry that the men are not invited.
Before I go, I'll also note that my weight was way up again today (134.2). I went back on the fitbit dashboard and checked my 7-day average of steps and calories and then went back to when I dipped down to 129/130 to how I was doing then. The numbers are about the same, so I'm wondering if my thyroid levels are acting up again. My TSH was back near goal when it was checked a couple of weeks ago, and all my other blood work, BP, cholesterol was fine. So it's frustrating. And I know that I have to be on guard when I'm feeling frustrated.

Sarah, I feel the same about large get-togethers, and especially if getting into a swimsuit is involved, lol. My friend had a pool party for all her friends AND clients yesterday at a local pool she reserved. Hubby and I skipped it. People could take their children or grandchildren, so if we had any little kiddos here we might have gone.
Hubby and I went to the eye doctor, and she said it was fine that I hadn't stopped wearing my contacts for more than the 12 hours I did, so I'm not sure why that was on the form. She never clarified. She's a new doctor, and I'm not sure I liked her that well. But, she's an eye surgeon also and supposedly very good, so her bedside manner isn't that important. Hubby was kind of put off that he needs cataract surgery asap, especially in one eye, and I'm good for another year. It always annoys him when I don't "age as much as him" since I'm older, lol. But, it's in a lighthearted way. I do have cataracts, but they don't need surgery yet. I've been looking into the types of lens replacements there are for when the time comes. There are corrective lenses that would do away with the need for glasses or contacts, but they're pricey. Hubby doesn't need correction other than reading, so we're looking at some decisions there. I have mono vision with my contacts, and I love it, but it's not good for long periods of reading or for golf. I have different lenses for golf, lol.
I'm so glad you haven't had that face problem for a while Sarah. Can you pinpoint what may have helped clear it up? Did you stop using the makeup you thought may have done it? That was so weird. As far as weight control, I definitely think just getting older makes it more difficult. Our metabolism slows down. Fewer calories get used for just being alive. Don't forget that having muscle helps that. Walking helps, but it always amazes me how few calories I burn with cardio activity. So frustrating.
We have plans for golf practice (SIL got a new driver) with my daughter here and her hubby. Probably will grab some food and come back here for some time together. She is still laying pretty low because she hasn't had the second vaccine shot yet. She had her OB apt last week, no ultrasound, but everything is looking good, and her doctor was very happy she went ahead with the vaccine. The numbers here are going up again, and there have been some "breakthrough" infections with vaccinated people.
Man, I'm so over this pandemic. We have another trip scheduled for August and daughter and SIL are flying up to Portland with us. I really hope things start to get better for the fall and winter.
I have a question for you, Sarah. My SIL here had the J & J vaccine, and he's thinking about getting the Pfizer one too for more protection. What do you think about that?
Lois, I hope your face is all better. Looking forward to posts from you and Kelly.

It's not the size of a gathering, but who would be there. I'm unsure if I would have gone either without kids either. With our friends, we easily have 20 people, but I would trust being with any/all of them because of their lifestyles etc. They are in the medical profession and they don't want to have the gatherings? Makes me question the vaccine and efficacy since they are all vaccinated and we are as well.
I hope you all had fun at the golf practice. I'm with you that all must start to get better sooner rather than later.
Well we survived a 24+ hour Rhea bootcamp. Her Mama and Dada went to a wedding a couple of hours away and she stayed overnight with us on Saturday. She's fighting her naptime something fierce so we (like her parents allow at their house) had her rest on the bed for about 90 mins and then she could get up again. Shhh but I think both Papa and I caught a mini snooze in there as well. We played in the house and then she wanted to go in the swimming pool So for an hour she was in my arms and then jumping from the top step to me for her "big jumps" - I'm feeling it. Lots of floor time and getting up from the floor. I need more of that daily I think. Yesterday hubby and I were exhausted when they left about 3pm.
I still have my antibiotic today and tomorrow and then I'm done. Tummy is feeling the effects. Taking Prilosec and two-three yogurts a day to help. Face is much much better so I will resume my TM walks tonight.
My DIL and her mom took Rhea to Sea World for a day last week. She did share how sore she was from having to carry Rhea to "see" different things and other times. Rhea was mostly content in the stroller just because of the amount of people, but she was warning us that we all need some sand bag carry training or something for this 35lb bundle of joy that may wish to be in our arms for the two days at "Mickey's house" in October. We're getting pretty excited about the trip...in a great way.0 -
Hello, all. Sheesh, right now, people are not recommended to receive more than one complete COVID-19 vaccination series. Also, the need for COVID-19 booster doses has not been established, so no booster doses are recommended at this time for anyone, including immunocompromised people or any other group of people with underlying medical conditions.
It was not being uncomfortable in a bigger group because of Covid that made me a little anxious about the pool party. I'm just more comfortable in smaller groups. People sometimes mistake me for an extravert, but I'm really more of a "mid-vert." I like being with people, but just don't enjoy big gatherings that much. Give me two or three other couples, and I'm happy. Our big stone table in the back seats 8, and to me that's perfect.
Lois, I'm glad to hear that your face is doing well. I have truly sent you good vibes since I can relate to face pain so well. I had a little face pain myself yesterday. I think I have broken that new crown that I got about six weeks ago--the one I had to pay for out of pocket! I felt a rough spot days ago and have been ignoring it, but last night I had kind of an ache in my ear and face, so to the dentist I must go.
With only 3 weeks left on the contract, I'm already both looking forward to and dreading having more time on my hands. This job has been pretty perfect except for that one awkward meeting with my team lead. But she's been fine since, so I'm going to accept her explanation that she was frustrated with herself that day.
And mentioning work, I just flipped over here to log dinner and have to get back to work. I worked some unpaid OT last night to finish up some things, so I'm a little ahead of the game, but Tuesdays are meeting days.
Have a good Tuesday.
