We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Looks

How much attention do you pay to how you look? Given that most of us are in or close to the senior group maybe it’s a strange time to start asking about looks but I’m doing it. Does your appearance play a roll in your weight loss plan?

Ok. Here’s my thinking. I was reading yesterday’s LTL and found myself thinking about red lines. And it seems to me some red lines are redder than others. Why? Wish I knew. I think I could write a $10M diet book if I could answer than.

Then I got around to thinking about me and now. I’m consistently around 176.4. Well below my 184 GW. But over the 175 that I thought was my last red line.

Before Covid I was 169-172 for awhile and generally trending down. And all things considered in decent shape having exercised regularly for years.

This last year my fitness has gone to pot. Pretty much literally as the 4-5 lbs that I gain are parked right on my guy. I look in the mirror and see a smaller version of THE FAT GUY that I was. I don’t like it.

Is that going to make for a red line? Unknown. Going to find out.

I think how I look is fairly important.

When I was at goal, my BMI was 28, so technically I was overweight. << Insert thumbed nose here >> I referred to my weight as a “socially acceptable weight”, and I think that’s important. People think less of overweight people, and that impacts how they treat you, options that are available, etc.

I’m not compelled to be the best looking codger at the senior center. I’m not one who’s overly concerned with other peoples’ opinions. I prefer looking hood to looking bad, which is why I wear button-down shirts instead of tee shirt for casual wear. I don’t want to limit myself based on people’s perception of me.

That’s parked right on my “gut.” I think that’s a typo equivalent of a Freudian slip. I can’t bring myself to say it.

When I first started I didn't want to wear a swim suit. After I lost on WW I found a way to do that. I do care but it is not the end all.

After 35 years in the retail end of men's clothing, I am concious of my looks. Like Charlie said, not the best looking coger, but not bad, to me. TOL really stuck by me up to 335# and down to (today) 224.2# at home.
Part of this is that I need to get weight off, and develop more muscle, to protech my knees and back. That's a day to day, week to week job.
My hair won't grow back, I won't have my "flap" removed, and I ain't getting any younger, but I want to look good enough to feel good about myself.

I'll be 73 this year, and still like to look good. I usually dress at least one notch up from what most men wear. I would have been one of Al's regular customers. Look good, feel good. Health is my primary goal for weight management, but looks are a nice byproduct.

I try to look presentable. I've always been a jeans and t-shirt sort of person. But, as a professional, I try to look fairly good. The West Coast is uber casual when it comes to dress. But, a lot of our suppliers and customers are East Coast, which is much more formal. I try to find a place in the medium. It bothers me when my stomach is on display; I have to say that.

I am very self conscious of my looks for more than one reason. So being over weight and being conscious of looks would lead one to believe it is a motivating factor to lose weight. I generally wear clothes that help the overweight situation. Apparently at age 74 the good food is currently winning the battle. Battles not over yet.
