I definitely start out my mornings with exercise first thing. No coffee for me! When my kids were really little, I used to run at 4:30 so I’d be back and showered by the time they woke up. My last several years of working, I had to be at work by 7, so I got up and got going between 4:30 and 4:45. Now that I no longer work, I can sleep a little later. But days that I have to get up at 5:30 I tell myself that this is sleeping in compared to before! I’m one of those people who gets cranky if I don’t exercise, so I do almost every single day of the year. Not high intensity every day though.4 -

@znaoiec Due to lower back problems, I start each day with 20-35 minutes of active stretching. It’s my preparation for movement essential. At least two days a week, I add cardio strength exercises which do include 3 sets of pushups; squats; rope skipping, medicine ball. Lastly, intentional walking on most days.6

@RangerRickL 20-35 minutes of active stretching first thing every day is very impressive! I find the older I get, the more time I have to spend stretching after jogging, biking (spin or outside) , or hiking. I tighten up really fast if I don’t. I really should spend more time proactively stretching when I haven’t just exercised! I used to be really good about taking yoga classes. Since we’ve moved to TN, I’ve only done a few online ones, except the few I’ve done when we went back to NC to visit family.1

During the school year, I start it off with a walk across town. For several months, I was really good starting my day off with yoga but I haven't been consistent with that for a while. It does improve my day when I do though.

@znaoiec I really want to be able to do push ups too--it was actually a goal for this month to get started, but it hasn't happened. Still plenty of time I suppose, but I can't figure out how to get going to improve strength--modified push ups maybe?
Hi @bradcrew i hope u dnt mind me chiming in. Def start with modified push ups on ur knees and u can slowly increase the amount u do then after a while u will be able to do them on ur toes. It just takes time & patience to straighten those muscles. I had to take a year recovery break after hving bub and going back i honestly struggled to do 2 on my knees ha ha i never thought id ever be able to do them on my toes again but thankfully i can now!!! @bradkcrew I've been taking a suuuuuper slow approach to push-ups, but it's been working. Month #1 I committed to do one full push-up a day. Month #2 I went up to two... and now I'm on month #3 with three. I realize there is nothing glamorous about this approach, but the consistency and the fact it increases as my body weight is decreasing has helped me stick with it.
There are days I do more than three but honestly I try to just stick to my three as for me it's more about creating the little habit than anything else.
All that to say, you've got this (no matter how you get there!!)6 -

Exercise? Yep, just over 20 minutes.
Tracking? Yep.
Calories? Nope.
How do I start my day? Usually whining in my head that I have to get up. Seriously, I barely drag myself out of bed with enough time to get to the bus on time. For the most part, I would almost power walk (at least my version of it) to the first bus stop, then kind of schlep between the last bus stop and work. Then, after work, I'd power walk back to the bus stop, and then kind of stroll when I get off the bus to my apartment. On the weekends, if I ride or "run/walk," I have to get up extra early especially during the summer. I don't like mornings. Well, it's okay once I get going, it's the getting going that's an issue.4 -

My PT said planks are the way to go. I find them very effective.There is a planks group challenge that is inspiring.4 -

as did substituting stitching instead of book reading
As did moving our episode of a mystery show from 9-10 pm to early evening.
And I think doing my long walk first thing in the morning is helping too. I’d get revved up on my evening walks (too close to bedtime?)

I appreciate the postings today everyone. I am now convinced that getting some of my exercise done first thing is really worth a try. Will be starting this tomorrow.
Cooler here now and in even better news, my friends in BC learned tonight that their beautiful home was spared the fire. I am so grateful.

How do you like to start off your day? I start my day on the treadmill as soon as I roll out of bed (well to be more precise I turn the espresso machine on first). After I'm done with the treadmill I have an espresso or two, eat something and do my weights unless it's a rest day.
Today was rough. I had the first shingles vaccine yesterday and I felt pretty bad today. Sore muscles, aches & pains, fatigue and a headache. Consequently, I only managed 20 mins on the treadmill and even had to slow it down because I was having pain in my ankle area which isn't typical at all. Since I didn't feel up to doing other exercise and still needed 15 mins for my apple ring I did some light stretching instead. I spent a good portion of the day in bed watching movies because I didn't feel like doing anything else. I'm feeling a little better this evening so hopefully I can go my full 35+ minutes on the treadmill tomorrow.9 -

@TwistedSassette I agree with snowshoe072! On months where I was seriously struggling, I made my #1 goal to "just show up" !! My mother used to say that the "secret" (to most things, really) was just to NOT GIVE UP! In months when I was struggling, I would try to focus the remainder of the month on trying to establish some better "habits" so that I could set myself up for success for the NEXT month! I hope you don't give up! You can do this!!6

I had shingles on my face and in my eye a couple years ago. It was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced. I still have numbness/pain in an eyebrow. So even though you had a reaction to the vaccine, it’s far better than getting shingles. Hope you recover quickly.TwistedSassette wrote: »

“Keep plugging away” is absolutely the secret to success. Transformation happens when you keep coming back when it gets tough. You’ll have better months, just stick with it.

I just pop/wake up around 5:30-6:00am whether I want to or not. I tried really hard to start my mornings with a walk around 8 or 9:00 am but I was miserable. I am not a morning person. I like to be left alone and drink my coffee and do about 2-3 hours of work. Then I work out. Then finish up work.

@bradkcrew For what it is worth, I have been working on doing modified push-ups on my knees and not very many. The goal is to build up strength slowly. I broke my shoulder several years ago and it took a long time to heal. It is still not fully functional and never will be according to my doctor. My upper body is so weak especially on that side. I have also found my knees don't like the pressure of push-ups either so I purchased a pad for them. The joys of aging!
