We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: The big stuff

I’m posting early because tomorrow is moving day. It’s on to FT Myers. How do you handle big changes without getting derailed. We’ve seen a hundred times, “I was doing great and then ______.” Work, house, relationships, happen and suddenly everything is up for grabs. How do you stick to the lifestyle when the big one hits?

Not my first moving rodeo dealing with staying with my plan. I think in terms of establishing habits. Have to concentrate on getting some new ones in place and be willing to push myself out of my comfort zone.

My 4 mile walk around the compound here that sustained me during Covid but is gone now. But there’s a state park about 1/2 mile down the road from the new place and I’m thinking bicycle. Gonna take a gentle push.
And we have a pool and a decent patio. I’m thinking more outside time. See how it goes.

I have to have a plan. Then, I have to stick to the plan. I will be traveling for work over the next two months, with extended periods in a hotel - which means being unable to do my usual food prep. But, I am working on a plan that I hope will allow me mitigate that fact. The key is to follow through on that plan.

I’ll admit to being big on routine, and less adaptable than in the past when something suddenly changes that routine. I’m a little better if it’s an expected change, because I can either create a plan to deal with it or accept that it’s just a transitional issue that will resolve.

I don't have any super-great advice. The key for me is to remember that each meal is an opportunity to start over. Indeed, the meals are usually not the problem for me...it's the snacking and alcohol that is more challenging. Sometimes when I'm really busy (as you must be), it's easier to avoid the snacks since I'm otherwise occupied.

I hope the move goes well and you enjoy your new home!
