Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes?
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day?
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank?

Weigh In About Weighing In
We're all here with various goals, using different approaches, and measuring progress against our own metrics. But if there is one thing outside of the 3 daily goals which I suspect everyone here in UAC shares, it's tracking our weight. If not, let us know about it!
So, how do YOU like to weigh in? Share any details or insights you wish. If you hate the scale and want to see me burst into flames for even bringing it up, my apologies, just skip the topic, or let us know about it if it helps. I won't take it personally, I promise. I certainly did not mean to offend!
I currently weigh myself each morning just after waking. I record a new weight any time it is a new low number which I have not already recorded recently.
I expect some fluctuations from day to day. Typically I drop some weight one or two mornings, then go back up about a pound or two over the next couple days and then trend back down to a new low.
All assuming I have continued my daily eating and exercise to plans, of course. So far I have been pretty consistent and maintained a downward trend, a pattern I am extremely grateful for.9 -

Love how sweet and considerate u are @mrs_hoffer. Bless!! Congrats on a downward trend, he hard work is paying off!xo2 -
Earlier this year I started the habit of weighing myself every morning, not because I am that worried about the scale, but because I know there can be crazy fluctuations. If I only step on the scale once a week and it happens to be one of those “up” days, then I get frustrated, especially if I’ve “been good” all week. But by weighing every day I can level out those ups and downs and instead focus on the trend.
Speaking of the scale, we’ll be on vacation for 10 days this month and I am actually considering bringing the scale along. Part of me doesn’t want to deal with it on vacation, part of me knows it’s one way to keep myself honest. My typical vacation routine is to eat really smart the first half and then slide into insanity the second half. We’re bringing a cooler so we can have lunches at parks. And breakfast will be our usual fare at the air bnb’s we have reserved. So the only meal out will be dinner. But we have a tendency to overeat at dinner and/or stop for donuts or ice cream or something delish based on someone’s recommendation.9 -

Like @biketheworld & @mrs_hoffer i weigh myself everyday, this keeps me focused and keeps my head out of the sand! Speaking of scales I've managed to stay stable and under my goal weight for the last couple of days. I'm still eating at a deficit for the time being as I'm scared the weight will go back up. My goal weight is 58kgs and I'm 57 on some days and 57.5kgs on other days. @biketheworld taking scales on vacation now that's genius. I'll hve to remember to do that on my next holiday. Xo8 -
@donna25trinity I'd love to take the credit, but I want to point out that it was @WhatMeRunning that made today's post and was so sweet, considerate and thoughtful about it!
THANK YOU so much Chris for all that you do for this group! I appreciate YOU!!!8 -
I am another one that weighs myself every single day. We went to Arkansas last week for a long 5-day weekend, and I seriously thought about bringing my scale!! Lol. I must say that I actually MISSED stepping on the scale first thing every morning! Lol.
I use the Libra app (for android - which is similar to the happy scale app for iPhone) and log my weight in there every single morning. It shows the downward "trend" and I pay attention to that much moreso than the daily number on the scale. Like Chris, I know that it's going to "bounce" up a little bit after a new record low and then it ticks down again... Also like Chris, I record a new weight on MFP any time it is a new low number which I have not already recently recorded.
I was most fascinated to learn recently how our bodies actually dispose of the fat deposits! We all probably already know that it does this through a series of complicated metabolic pathways:
The byproducts of fat metabolism leave your body:
As water, through your skin (when you sweat) and your kidneys (when you urinate).
And as carbon dioxide, through your lungs (when you breathe out).
So go ahead and take those big, deep, long breaths throughout the day!!!! You could very well be breathing OUT your excess fat!!!!!16 -

As far as the scale... It's a tool. When I was working on losing in 2017 and for much of the next several years I weighed daily and used happy scale to see trends. Like Chris, in the loss phase you see a couple days bouncing around but the trend is typically down.
Part of my maintenance since last July is that I do not weigh regularly. I do log and I do keep an eye on my clothes fit. But the fluctuations in maintenance after a while are just annoyances to me, and I do not like the scale to rule my day so I just put it away. If I feel like I want to trend downward for some reason I may pull it out for a week or two but mostly I just let it sit and collect dust. Everyone is different though. And over time this could change. Maintenance is not one static approach, but must be managed over longer term weeks and months.
Speaking of tools tho I did notice that some of the health metrics and gadgets are imbued with <shudder> ageism. Yup. Just like MFP when you turn over another year your metrics go downhill.
I have a little hand held BF Omron machine, and it no longer will go to my age (I guess no one over 60 wants to measure BF/BMI %s?) So anyway, one day when I was playing with it I put my age in as 39 and my BF% dropped from 20 to 15. Seriously. The only change was the input age factor.
The same for my watch calculating my VO2max HR data. With the correct age I cannot break 36.6 ish. When I put my age in 20 years younger it bumped up yo 39.4 immediately. I also think my watch cal burn which altho is mostly effected by your weight also uses age.
I really would like to see some of the formulas which calculate the metrics and the weight age plays in them.10 -

Just downloaded the libra app. Couldn't find the happy scale app. Thanks guys, wasn't aware of them!4

@fourathomej I want the recipe for that creole dump chicken you posted about yesterday! Please share!
I really LOVED reading everyone’s post saying what was for dinner last night! Can we do that one again soon?!? Loved the variety!
And someone had scallops, I forgot who, but I was SALIVATING just reading about it!7 -

@Biketheworld I have often wished I had my scale with me when I’ve been away from home. The only problem is my scale is an old timey balance scale, that weighs a ton and is nearly 5 feet tall! I thought about getting a new one a couple of years ago since I’ve had this one for 27 years( to monitor losing baby weight). I stepped on a scale in Bed, Bath and Beyond and it gave me a weight. Stepped on it again about 2 mins later without eating, drinking and it read 5 pounds higher! My scale is only accurate to the quarter pound but it can’t mess up!

Checking in.... I know I'm not consistent with days.
I'm doing my best to get my water in and am doing better with it.
My sleep is okay, I need more.
My food has been pretty good... 2 days since the 1st I ate more than I should but I didn't go crazy.
My exercise is I get it when I get it and enjoy it when I do.8 -
@biketheworld - I think taking the scale (assuming it's practical) is a great idea! Just having it there as a reminder would just be another factor to help with all the other factors of vacation.
Very happy to hear you are maintaining the weight this well @donna25trinity
Thanks for sharing the "fat disposal" facts @Mrs_Hoffer, I have sometimes wondered how exactly it leaves. Now I know!
@SummerSkier that is fascinating about the apps and devices being so skewed over age! I can understand a variation being needed, but some of those numbers seem way off. Makes me wonder what my gadgets might start saying if I tell them I'm only 25.
I love your consistency @Winner_In_Life you keep the effort at the highest level day in and day out!
Wow @clutterqueen I just realized I haven't seen one of those in a little while, but it will always be perfectly accurate and never needs new batteries!
Congrats on the 3 x YES day @taurie @ashleymullo6195
Keep on checking in @StarfishK (by the way, was that a 3 x YES day to the 3 goals?)9 -

Pass day #1 tracked, over, exercised
Used to do a weekly weigh in but this month, doing it daily6 -
Yes x3. Exercise was a run. A very sweaty humid run.
I weigh every morning and log on Libra. My phone had a cracked screen and it was getting repaired for a couple of weeks so I had a temporary phone and I was so annoyed that I couldn't track and see my trend. I've now got to spend a few days tracking for it to get back into its swing. It did show me how much accuracy helps calm the weight fluctuations panic.7 -
Currently I weigh myself once a week, first thing in the morning. I'm in weight loss mode presently so don't see a reason to weigh more often.
Once I hit maintenance I have not decided if I should weigh more frequently or not. I believe that a major issue I have had in the past is that I stop weighing myself altogether, and let the weight gain spiral unchecked. Perhaps I need to weigh daily and have some sort of giant chart where I record the weight so I have to face reality every single morning before I start my day.8 -
Exercise: 4 mile run...sort of. I had some sort of mind/body disconnect and a couple of times I just abruptly started walking without making any conscious decision. I only walked a short distance then got back at it and finished strong...idk, before I even set out I asked myself WHY I am doing this? So, I forced myself to do a 20 HIIT video as penance for my negative thoughts and mental weakness, lol.

@bradkcrew
Run, don’t walk, and get Libra (Android) or Happy Scale (Apple).
I also use the Health App & some Apple Watch features.
I, too, every other time regained the weight I lost. I stopped weighing myself.
I promised myself I would weigh myself every day. The apps mentioned above allows you to see weekly, monthly, yearly trends.
I find it very motivating to keep my
Monthly average weights in a range.
I’m committed to keeping my average yearly weights in a range.
It’s just so easy for little changes of food or exercise to add up over time. These trends help “wake me up to times like these”!!8 -
✅ - Exercise 20+ Minutes: minutes, aerobics/walking/circuits
✅ - Calories within budget
✅ - Tracked everything
3️⃣ Pass Days left
I weigh daily first thing in the morning after I have carried out the usual offices. It Fluctuate up and down, but I only worry about it if it starts going up consistently.
At the moment it’s inching down ever so slowly.8 -
Sept 9:
✅✅✅ Exercise today was a 40 min walk outside at work, and giving massages tonight at my 2nd job.
In the past, I too have been one to stop weighing myself (daily) once I hit my goal weight.... and then slowly watched it creep back up as I only stepped on the scale perhaps once a month or so. But not this time! I'm so excited to be this close to my goal weight (about 10-12 lbs) and know that once I get there I'll shift into a maintenance mode and just keep on keeping on right here on MFP and in the UAC! I do love the Libra app and watching the downward trend over time.6 -
Tracked logged and stayed under today 0/3 pass days. My exercise was walking at lunch and strength work which included kettlebell work and medicine ball.
I am one who weighs everyday before drinking any liquid and this allows me to focus on what I may need to adjust for food for the day. I should add that I use the Fitbit aria which I find helpful for BMI , body fat and lean muscle the data prompts me in my world to work a little harder some may say this is compulsive I just use it as my guide to a healthier me.6 -
Oh, I’ll be the outlier in this conversation. 🤪 Currently, I see a nutritionist once a month at my doctors office. She weighs me with a super duper fancy scale that measures and tracks changes to bone, muscle, water, fat, and estimates basal metabolism. We discuss how I am doing, she adjusts my macros and calorie targets for the month, and gives some guidance on some new things to try. I am good with this for now as I have a long road ahead, and am experienced with “losing” once my heart and brain are in it (which they are now).
I go for my third monthly weigh in on September 22 (first was the base starting weight; second I had lost 11 pounds; third I had lost 7 more pounds). So far, I know that I am doing well, am seeing significant changes in my body, and that my clothes are looser and looser. I’ll post after the September 22 visit, and at some point we’ll move to me weighing more frequently. Right now I think that I would honestly find it too discouraging.
Read the spoiler below if you wish for my story about my relationship with scales and some of the frustrations and successes. When I lost 90 pounds on WW about five years ago, I used a very expensive and highly rated digital scale and weighed myself three times in a row every morning — using the lowest of the three to record in my soreadsheet. Why? The fluctuations minute to minute were infuriating. Though I was achieving success over the trend line, I gave it the power to ruin my morning, every single day. We replaced the batteries, exchanged it for a replacement, with no improvement.
Then, six months after the big weight loss, I had accident on the ice outside the swimming complex which resulted, at the end of it all, in five surgeries and five recoveries on my left leg. When I returned to load bearing (I had a total of 49 weeks non load bearing on that leg over the course of all of this), I had to use a scale to incrementally increase the load on that leg to both strengthen it and acclimatize the nerves to the painful sensations.
The digital scale was useless for load recovery and my husband found and purchased an analog scale for me to use. When I eventually could weigh myself again, it kept a stable weight. But my weight was up so significantly I honestly tried to avoid it. I had never focused on or learned the keys to maintenance and making the lifestyle changes after that big loss. I had been incredibly active and burned tremendous calorie loads prior to the accident.
I became (and am) so much less active. By the time I was ready to start getting active again, Covid hit. Then I broke my right leg falling down the stairs. And I comfort ate and continued to gain and gain.
I have re-learned how to walk twice in my adult life. My left ankle is now fused, all the hardware in my left leg has been removed, the right leg has recovered fine. I simply can never run, skip, or jump from any height again.
I can walk. I can run in the water (which I really enjoy) and will again when the indoor pools become safer places in our city. I returned to lane swimming outdoors this summer as I can finally do that again (even if I skew left 🧐). I worked with a coach and learned how to compensate for that and build my endurance, and it will be easier swimming indoors where there are lane ropes.
I am so glad to be here.

@jamcnewman I read your spoiler. Wow, that is tragic. Props to you for staying in the fight!!
@MadisonMolly2017 Thanks for the advice.
@Mrs_Hoffer I am in the same ballpark as you toward reaching my end goal. Let's do this!!4
