Happy Wednesday!
Last week we stayed at a cabin in the mountains.
We tried to keep our cooking simple and yet eat healthy. I found an ‘eggs for dinner’ recipe that worked well for us.
It was a Mexican egg scramble comprised of eggs, onion, cheese, black beans and a can of Ro-Tel tomatoes/Green chilies all cooked in one pan. It was simple to make and relatively nutritious as compared to going out to eat.
Do you have any favorite easy 'throw together meals' that you take on the road with you when traveling?7 -
Your 'eggs for dinner' recipe sounds really good - and I love the all-in-one-pan idea! I'll have to try that one!
I don't have "meals" per se, but I always take along snacks for eating while in the car! Otherwise I find myself "hangry" and eating whatever is available (which is never anything 'good' for me!!)
Some of my "go to's" include: baby carrots, my own "trailmix" -> nuts/raisins/dried cranberries mix, my own peanut butter bars (no bake, and I can make these up in about 5 mins and then refridgerate them!), grapes, apples, boiled eggs, cheesesticks....3 -

Exercise: Frustratingly no. Volunteered at daughter's school for a tiring large part of the day and then started work after that. Did not manage to fit in any exercise, which puts me out of contention for the winner's circle.
Calories under: Yes
Tracked all: Yes
(pass days 4/3 to date) Can't think of a go to travel meal at the moment but have always liked those eggs all in vegetables dish mixes too (absolutely no idea what Ro-Tel is though)4 -
@znaoiec - those eggs sound delicious! And what a great way to manage food while on vacation. In my case, since hubby does all the cooking, when we vacation, we do pack breakfasts and lunches but we always eat dinner out. Typically I start out making great choices, but by the end of vacation I’m eating and drinking too much, and buying donuts at the gas station.2

Exercise yes short bike ride but several short cardio workouts
Tracked – yes
Calories – yes
I could only fit a short bike ride this morning -down to the shops with a small diversion – as I had to get my booster covid vaccination at 11.30. Now my arm is a bit sore but otherwise fine.
When we go away in my motorhome we take breakfasts and usually have a light lunch out. I take a dish that I have cooked and frozen – often a cottage pie – and my boyfriend contributes a ready meal that just needs to go in the oven. I do have a good size oven and four gas rings on the hob.
When we go abroad self-catering we buy local fresh fruit and veg as much as possible but often have to resort to tins of meatballs, quick cook meat etc. with pasta.
I presume Ro-Tel tomatoes is just a brand name for tinned tomatoes?

We take all our food for our trips or day outings even before CoVID.
Healthier & prevents my Restaurant Meal addiction (Ie more salt, more fat, more sugar & larger portions) from rearing it’s ugly head !!
The secret is having effective cooling AND for us, taking a couple of our home-grilled boneless skinless chicken breasts. Cleaned ready to eat veggies, fruits, dark chocolate, nuts, canned tuna, drinks, some bread, sometimes peanut butter or plain yogurt.
Works for us. It took a few outings for me to realize I actually preferred eating our regulars while parked looking over the ocean or sitting on a hillside or in a redwood forest.
Our one exception is we will usually get a nonfat decaf latte & a croissant while on the road (and often at home too.) They don’t trigger the hunger in me.
Heather from Half Size Me has an excellent post on handling trips. I figured out our system after listening to it & refined our process over time (as she recommends.)
And yes I take my food scale.
And if staying overnight, I take our weight scale.
As I always say, “It’s just food.”4 -

4 pass days used (1st, 2nd, 7th, 24th)
Today's exercise was a core isometrics routine (3 supersets of superman, forearm plank, side planks, hollow body hold, reverse plank)
Checking in a little early again today and will update if anything changes.
Traveling is a neat concept. LOL! Not to say I haven't done so, but it is exceedingly rare, and never easy. The last thing I am concerned about is diet at such times. I figure it out when I'm there, and get back to normal when I'm back home. I'm definitely interested to hear what people do though. I figure that one day I may actually do such a thing.4 -

Pass Days Used: Too many.
After work I met hubby and a realtor to look at a house for sale. It's out by his hunting property, but not quite what we're looking for. After that, we went to dinner. By the time we got home, it was dark and I couldn't walk outside.5 -

Sounds delicious @znaoiec. Frozen cooked ribs were always my first day travel dinner. I would make the sides too and pack them in foil containers. Easy meal for hub to look after on the BBQ while we finished organizing the camp or cottage.
Three ✅✅✅ today. I'm on track for the Winner's Circle. My pass days taken were Oct 1, 5 & 12.5 -

I think due to COVID I haven't truly put my new lifestyle to the full travel test. However, one thing I do know I do now for road trips is make sure I pack snacks. Noting fancy - granola bars, fruit. But just having options is a good thing.
This is silly but another change for me is to take my own water so I can stay hydrated without excuses. I used to drink almost no water so this is a new habit for me.
My husband does most of our cooking and when we travel we do generally eat out but another thing that's changed is our decision making on where to eat and what we'll have when we get there.
He tracks on MFP too and is on a similar weight loss journey to mine so it makes it so much easier when we're on the same page!6 -
Great post and recipe idea @znaoiec — thanks!
Like @WhatMeRunning I can barely conceive of the idea of travelling again and perhaps that can be something to look forward to next year.
Our travel is usually a drive to for one week plus long AirBnB or VRBO rentals, or flying and staying in very comfortable hotel accommodations. I love planning for both these types of trips and we’ve really come to prefer (pre-Covid anyway) the road trip to a week or two week long booked accommodation with great kitchen setup, fantasic outdoor experience, local markets and food, wineries, and lots of swimming, walking, etc.
Part of the fun, for me, is finding recipes to highlight local fresh foods and so I sometimes bring along my “essential tools” so I can really enjoy the experience. I always lose weight on vacation: and put this down to eating whole foods, so much less stress, getting plenty of sleep, lots of activity and exercise. Now I want to go away on vacation!

Pass day - Date day did wind up being a lot about food. I am hoping to sub that for my usual Friday takeout day, at least.
Exercise - none
Tracking - none
Calories - over for sure
We haven't traveled much with COVID, but even before our travel was with young kids (my oldest is 9.5 so that's been a while). We tend to stay either with family or in an AirBnB with a kitchen. Picky kids with set routines mean we mostly cook at home, but get some takeout as well. When we stay with family and they cook that's a bit more of a problem - we usually make substitutions for the kids but I feel the need to eat what they make because it's rude not to. In August we spent a week with my parents and they insisted on eating after my 5 year old's bedtime, so I was often putting him to bed and then coming late to dinner and my dinner would already be on a plate for me and I was tired and hungry because it was later than I usually eat. I'd eat everything on the plate (way more than I usually would pick) and feel sick afterwards. Not surprisingly, I gained a fair bit of weight on that vacation! I need to figure out a better plan next time somehow. They are coming to visit in 2 weeks and I think we're going to force them to eat at our normal dinner time. My stepmother says she "couldn't possibly" eat before 6:30, which when she is in charge of cooking really means 7. My 5 year old falls apart if dinner is later than 5:30. Maybe by next summer he can stay up a bit later.3 -
