Hi UAC-ers!!
INTRO
Many of us use ear buds or over-the-ear headphones when we exercise, Walk/Run,
Mindfulness, Sleep Sounds/Guided Visualizations, and many other things we do for our Health.
So I want to let you know that one bad blast in my right ear has given me tinnitus & it’s horrible. Please check out my story & the link if you want more info. I don’t want anyone else to go through this!!
STORY
I had barely used any headphones or earbuds until the past couple of years. In fact, I only wore my right ear bud, so I could hear traffic etc on my daily 90-minute walks/hikes.
A month ago today, my phone’s volume button got pressed by a pant pocket that I tried to use to hold my phone (since my hands were getting very sore from holding my phone each day.)
I did have earbuds in both ears that day. I yanked out the left earbud & tried to get phone out of pocket to turn down volume. Should have just yanked out both - in hindsight.
Odd, I thought.
I had something I really wanted to listen to that had already started. I put the right earbud in again. Tried the pocket, figured it was an anomaly- perfect storm. LOUD SOUND. YIKES Yanked it out!!!! Cupped my right ear gently, Swore, & said outloud “Wow that HURTTttssssssss!!!!”
Didn’t think much More about it, but of course have not used earbuds since.
TINNITUS
Tinnitus- ringing In Ear- developed in my right ear. It’s awful. I’m learning to control it- my techniques work most, but not all of the time. Like right now.
PLEASE learn from my experience. You do NOT want this.
Throw out your kids’ ear buds - and yours.
My ENT told me she’s making a mint “a whole career” because of earbuds & headphones. Teens falling asleep with music blaring in their ears especially distressed her.
The last thing I want you to know… The hearing in my Left ear is nearly perfect. The right ear is slightly worse than the average for someone my age & did not get worse with the blast. There is no doubt in my mind I should have stuck to my plan not to use earbuds. Luckily I only used my right ear bud 97% of the time.
Tinnitus is not a disease. Your brain perceives a sound that is not there. My hearing was not damaged by the blast. But my quality of life sure was.
MY PLEA:
Please learn from my experience.

I feel for you @MadisonMolly2017
I have tinnitus but mine is the sound of crickets. Where I live we sometimes get crickets in the house in the summer so the first year this happened I thought there were crickets in the bedroom and went a little crazy when trying to sleep. I think it might have taken me nearly a year to realize there were no crickets. It was tinnitus.
I have noticed it is a little intermittent and I actually only ever notice it when I'm not falling asleep quickly. Since I retired it's been less of a problem because I rarely have insomnia anymore but when I still worked the tinnitus cricket sound was pretty awful when I had insomnia. In any case it might improve for you with time. The other thing I noticed is that it's worse when laying on one side rather than the other so you might experiment with that to see if there is a difference.

Thank you @LazyBlondeChef 😁
You are the third person I know who no longer really hears it (unless someone mentions it!) very encouraging!
Mine is worse mid-afternoon when I go for my walk, persists through dinner & then sometimes quiets a tad/sometimes not.
Funny about which side you lay on. From the beginning I’ve wanted to top my head to the right. I find it’s much better if I sleep on my right side. I’ve even pulled a hood over the right side of my head, but not as far on left (so my left ear is uncovered) & that seems to help me focus on the real sounds rather than the fake ones
I’m glad your insomnia is better & your crickets are quiet!
Hugs,

that's interesting Maddie. And also frustrating that you know the cause of your tinnitus. Hope that it settles soon and doesn't progress to dizzyness etc. I know exactly what you mean about the volume accidently getting turned WAY UP on the phone in your pocket. Mostly I run just with my watch (maybe that would work so you don't have to hold your phone) so I would have to really on purpose turn the vol and I don't have it high anyway because I want to hear other things. I also only use one ear bud at a time anyway to save on power because I don't need both of them.3

@MadisonMolly2017 I feel so badly for you. Ty for the warning also.
Yes x 3. I got into some Halloween treats - I knew I should have waited until next weekend to buy them. But I stopped myself and I was lucky in that I had a good workout today. Sadly I wasted my extra exercise effort on sweets but lucky that I had enough calories burned to cover it. Glass half empty or full I guess7 -

Track: yes
Calories: yes
Exercise: yes- Full Body Warm Up: 5 min
- Day 31: EPIC I - Abs & Glutes workout : 45 mins
- Day 33: EPIC I - Legs & Bicep workout (+ cool down): 51 mins
I may regret this tomorrow but I did two EPIC workouts today since I didn't exercise at all yesterday. I did the workouts scheduled for Wed & Fri. Tomorrow I'll do Day 32 which I should have done yesterday. About half way through the second one I slowed down some. I was committed to doing this so I could have Sunday as a rest day since Day 34 is the longer full body workout.4 -
@MadisonMolly2017 thanks for sharing your story and also posting the link. The volume turning up way loud like that happened a couple of times on my old mp3. It was so loud I thought it might burst my eardrum! The way my current mp3 is I don't think that would happen, but after reading the article you shared, what I would like to know is how many decibels I'm listening to music to when I run. Hopefully it's not at a level that is damaging to my ears, but it could be on runs that last longer than an hour. I have it at level 8, when in contrast, when I use the FM radio feature of my mp3 in bed to listen to talk radio if I can't sleep, I only have the volume on 0 or 1 otherwise it's too loud.
I hear some ringing in my ears at times that is probably tinnitus. Thankfully it doesn't bother me. I guess it isn't bad enough, at least not yet...

@slimtastesbetter
I was very surprised when I read the research that more than an hour can be an issue.
I did Google “how to measure decibels” & there were several apps. I don’t know if that would work for you. I learned city traffic noise is 80-90db, so if we try to hear over that, we’d definitely at risk.
I’m Glad you are doing well!!
Best,

Tinnitus? Story of my life. I haven't a clue what triggered it, but I've had it for years. Both ears. Some days are better than others.4
