New Plan: Solely relying on NSVs

I have been allowing myself to get heavier and heavier because I can’t bring myself to get on a scale to start a new plan. I can’t explain it. I guess I’m afraid of triggering one of my eating disorders.

So…. new plan. Found an eating plan where what my starting weight is doesn’t matter. It’s regimented so that it will work even if i’m not perfect. I’m basing it’s success on the NSVs. Increased energy, Looser pants etc

I’m giving myself 6 months
then i will hop on a scale and decide from there

I don’t really talk about it because people do the whole: But don’t you want to know…. or you’ll not be able to brag about how much you lost… how do you stay motivated

This is me
this is where i am
this is what i have to do
accept it
support me
or stay out of my way (that’s for other people NOT Goadies. you guys are allowed to be brutally honest)

This would drive me nuts. The analytic side of me has to have numbers. I get, though, that you’ve gotta have an approach that works for where your head is. So with that, two thoughts:
    • Photos every month in the same outfit and pose will help you visually appreciate the progress. You don’t need to share 'em, but you’ll have them for reference.
    • Maybe too close to the scale issue, but regular measurements? That’s tangible and non-scale.

I applaud you for an unconventional choice. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I join Charlie and applaud this new direction you've decided on. I have just recently decided to get back to at least tracking daily after a year or two being on a non tracking nutritionist plan that I eventing abused and then on to a weight clinic where I lost 33 lbs on 2 milkshakes a day and a sensible dinner in about 3-4 months. So while I'm going to still see the weight Doctor I'm going to get back to what helped me lose weight and still keep my mental capabilities. Tracking and concentrating on each meal.

I'm with Charlie. I'm a numbers guy and I just gotta keep track of something because left to my own devices I will let the train jump the track and take a dirt road.😀

I think we all have to do whatever we need to do at the moment. It might be hard for me to follow, because I think I'd need to see it "working," but if you can tolerate using NSVs instead, more power to you.

At the same time, I think we've all been around long enough to recognize that if we eat properly, our weight will respond properly. Seeing that response on the scale is nice, but if it is going to make you crazy, I don't see a problem with it. Indeed, I think you'll know if you're eating properly (i.e., following your plan), and maybe that's enough.

And for the record - you are far grim the first, and unlikely to be the last of this august group to regain some weight and have to reset.

Amen on your last post Charlie. I think we all could write a book about the weight loss journey.

I actually wrote a play years ago about weight loss. It was called

I’ve found it best to avoid talking to outsiders about my plan. Always seemed like a lot of other people knew exactly what I should be doing. Good luck.

And you reminded me of this if you don’t mind a story. A lot of the men in my family worked in the same factory. The ones who watched their weight would do this- when they felt their belts getting tight they’d go to the loading dock and get on the freight scale. (Why spend $3 on a bathroom scale?)
If they were up 5 lbs, that was the red line. No bread except sandwiches for lunch, no potatoes, no pie on Sunday. Some kind of limit on beer as no beer was not an option. Stick to this for 1 month. Go back to the loading dock. Stay on the plan until the scale is -5 and back to the right notch on the belt.

Although I tend toward data, I also understand how overwhelming data can be. So, I totally get the NSV approach. Belt tightness tells us a lot if we're willing to listen to it.
